Nice set of bits. I have a set of users, and then a complete set of NOS in a very similar box to what you've shown. What's the imprint on the shaft of those bits?

Lie Nielsen and Veritas make the nicest "affordable" hand tools. There are also plenty of specialty manufacturers out there making really upscale tools, like Bridge City tool works.

A nice sharpening kit could be a nice gift if he already has good planes and chisels, with Tormek being the king of sharpening systems. A scraping plane could be a nice gift if he doesn't have one. And then a little simpler, a no. 4 1/2 smoothing plane is kind of a nice improvement over the more commonly used no. 4 smoothing plane. A low angle block or smoothing plane could also be an option.
