WMS Indiana Jones Wire Ramps

I've owned an IJ for a few years now. A previous owner did some custom work on the machine, painting the cabinet hardware, legs, and wire ramps. Quality of the work is okay-ish. I'm thinking about taking the ramps down to their original finish, so my questions are:

What should I expect to find under the paint? A brass-like finish? chrome-like?
Any recommended methods for paint removal?

If I find a mess under there I'll probably send them off to be plated.

The original finish is brass, covered by protective coating.
Remove a ramp, and remove the actual paint from a hidden area, then you will see what is the structure behind the latest paint.
