I have a WMS Indiana Jones that plays fine until I get 2 balls locked in the idol. After the second ball is kicked up to the idol, the game puts 2 balls in the shooter lane.

Where do I begin to try and trouble shoot this?

Swenny,

Hopefully some with more knowledge than me will chip in, but if memory serves IJ has a "1st generation" opto trough board. These did not have rubber grommets on the mounts which made them exceptionally susceptible to vibration damage to the opto's / circuitry. Thus, if me, I would first check the opto trough board for rubber grommets on the mounts, if missing I would check here first for faults & if fault is found consider potential upgrade to one with grommets or alternatively check for vibration damage to the opto transmitter / receiver & repair as appropriate.

Apologies if it transpires my response is rubbish.

Regards,

YOP !

YOP, you are right on.
OP...place the game into switch test.
Fill the trough with balls.
Are all of the switches making?

My guess is that you are on a vector to replace/repair trough opto boards.
See: http://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Williams_WPC#Opto_Testing
...for the test method. Trough switches are fairly easy to test. You can remove both the sender and receiver side, and slide the boards back and forth using different sender/receiver pairs to isolate the sender/receiver that is at fault.

Don't for get to run the idol test as there are 6 optos in there that will not be tested during the switch test.

OK, started looking at the pin. Put it in test mode, pulled the connector off of the trough opto board closest to the front of the machine and discovered a break in one of the wires. Looks like I need to replace that first. Also, now none of my opto switches work anywhere on the game. Would a bad connector at the trough cause all of the optos to go bad, even the ones on the ramps for instance?

Guess you will find out when you fix the one issue. Report back.

Tested the optos with a camera and they were all fine. Put the pin in test mode for switch edges and it appeared fine. As a test, while I was pushing the flipper buttons I could get the trough 3 switch to flicker. I think I've found the problem.

Definitely a smoking gun.

An update for anyone in the future that might encounter the same issue, I tried re-flowing the relevant optos on the ball trough transmitter board. Still didn't work. Got tired of screwing around with it. Went ahead a purchased a new transmitter board from GLM. Problem solved.
