I love my new Wizard of Oz Ruby Red 75th Anniversary. Amazing game! I've got a bunch of questions, though. Hopefully some of you guys can help me out.

- I don't like black flipper rubbers. Does this game take the same size flipper rubbers as Williams games?

- While the light show is absolutely gorgeous, the playfield is awfully dim (I play in a mostly-dark room). There doesn't seem to be much GI to speak of. Is there a mod out there that solves this, without detracting from the light show? What are my best options?

- Has anyone tried the mod that puts LEDs in the eyes of the apple trees? opinions? is it worth paying extra for the effects box?

- Any other suggestions for mods? are there areas I should be adding cliffy protectors?

- Should I wax the playfield right off the bat, or is that unnecessary? The playfield doesn't feel as slick as my other games, which I wax regularly.

- I know whenever anyone buys a Stern game, the first piece of advice is change the balls. Is that true with WOZ as well? What are the best balls for a game with magnets?

We just got ours as well. Thanks for asking so many of the questions i've been trying to answer for myself - especially the tree eyes. Following along.

I have the ECLE model but I would highly recommend changing out the Winkie Guard drop target for Mezel Mods lighted version. It lights up that area very well.

Some ideas:

PROTECTION
* Playfield Protection
- Mylar installed around bumpers, holes, etc???
- Cliffy Kit ~$120 http://www.passionforpinball.com/WOZ.htm
or
- Playfield Protector (Makrolon) ~$119 from Bay
http://bayareaamusements.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=GS-WOZ-PF-PROTECTOR
* Plastic Protectors
- ~$38 http://www.pinbits.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=27&products_id=608c

LIGHTING/VISIBILITY
* General Illumination Kit (GI)
~$139 delivered http://www.pinballbulbs.com/products/wizard-oz-pinball-illumination-kit-woz
* Invisiglass from JJP ~$300

SHAKER if you like
* Shaker Motor

Then from there you can really bling it out if you want... there are quite a few options for castle wall mods, witch mods, accessories, etc. See http://mezelmods.com/collections/wizard-of-oz for one example... search for other mod threads to see more.

The winky guard led mod is a must.. Not sure who sells it but makes my game easier to play with it visible better

The Mezel throne room fire pots and lighted drop target are really nice mods.

Forgot... you may want to also make some minor adjustments to remove speaker buzz... see

Forget the Cliffy's in a HUO, imho, put down some cling vinyl if certain spots if you are worried about it, I'm not.

Markmon's crew has a GI lighting kit that works fantastic. Pinballbulbs

Change the balls, yes

Surely the RR came with a shaker?

If you don't have one, get a dust cover, that and new balls rotated are the best thing you can do

No need to wax, haven't waxed mine yet, just kept it clean and wiped down with "special cleaner sauce" and use hand held swiffer

Yeah, Ruby Red came with shaker and external volume controls already.

Will definitely be picking up new balls and that GI kit.

thanks for the tips everyone!

Yeah, these look great!

Anybody else break a lit Winkie - I've broken 2 now so I went back to the old one though the light shines around the hole still. BTW- It's my favorite mod - should be standard.

Through the door volume control is very nice - I'll add it to Hobbit

State Fair balloon light brightens up that area.

I'm not sure about the tornado mod - it's OK.

I'm looking at adding gi kit myself now. Any kit other than just pinball life's or what is recommended? Adding hobbit next to woz has really shown how dark woz is.

You can always do what I did: buy some spots and bulb holders, a few brass hex spacers and put it together yourself. Cost was about 15 dollar and you cannot tell the difference.

That's what I'm thinking. Do you remember the hex size you used and where did you order it?

I'm also interested how i can add some spotlights and a ledstripe to woz by myself

USB-led stripe = OK
2 spotlights in slings
1 spotlight on the right

But how do i connect the spotlights?

#17 7 years ago

I am hoping that when JJP starts building WOZ again they can address the GI issue by adding those.

Yes the kit winkie feom mezel is brittle. I'm using this one now which has so far lasted twice as long: https://pinside.com/pinball/market/ad/36025

Between the lit winki and the state fair light mod I feel light is sifficient for a dimly lit room?

I've since bought the above Winkie - it's a much better one, very well made
