Any thoughts on the playfield cnc routing? I know your neighbor's machine didn't go so well and the local Makerspace was closed, but couldn't find any posts after that. Just the one that said it was done. I have a new toy (x-carve cnc router) and was going to give that a shot. Plywood is expensive so was hoping to get it right the first time. Was hoping for some feedback on
- best type of cutting bit to use (upcut, downcut? fluted endmill? ...)
- size of bit? 1/8"?
- cleanout inserts or use tabs or let them fly?
- bit to drill holes?
- special bit for shooter lane?
Basically, any thoughts you have about that process and how the fitment went with all the inserts - like does a 1" insert fit well into a 1" hole?, insert flange depth, etc. etc.
I recommend cutting in foam before letting the chips fly in real wood. Once you have tolerances and everything tuned on the cheap stuff, step up to plywood with confidence. Mind your feeds and speeds, know what works on your individual machine, use others' reports as a starting point to work up to.
Downcut will splinter the bottom and leave the top practically finished.
I use 0.125in with a 0.25in shank, two flute. I clean out pockets. tabs can be a pain - the more inserts, the more post processing.
I used corner radius endmill on similar finish to shooter lane with success in the past, fewer passes than ball (some would argue the scalloping could be beneficial) and less post-processing required in my use case.
