Quoted from dendoc:

Great to hear, but I wonder why Jack told Jeff Patterson from TWIP they were NOT on the production line?

Me too. Apologies for bad reporting by TWIP, very frustrating. Thought Jack would just say "no comment" if he didn't want to share. I followed up with him multiple times to make sure what he was telling me and what I was reporting was accurate. Cancelled the LE I had on order.

That being said, congrats to the JJP team on getting these out.

Awesome news, congrats to the JJP team for pulling this off.

Then order one from a distributor you trust...

#67 4 years ago
Quoted from KingPinGames:

... and still support a company whose owner directly and repeatedly lied to him? I get the attempt at humor, but it seems inappropriate in this situation. Good on Jeff for pulling support of a company that did him wrong. "No comment" seems like it would have been a better answer to Jeff's questions.

Quoted from Breger1:

And of all the people in the pinball hobby Jeff does more for it than anybody. He’s honest, provides great content and works his a$$ off putting in the time to provide reliable reporting and then Jack bends him over and laughs his happy, insert, to a semi pulling away a product with artwork my 7 year old niece could do better with. Good for you Jeff keep up the great work, don’t let someone who 9/10 can’t hit his mark throw you off. I too cancelled my SE, 2 weeks ago after realizing if I want a lame depth of code I’d go for Munsters or BK for $1500 cheaper.

Wow,this is a little of an extreme statement, don't you think?Lets not forget Pat designed Wonka and everyone who's
taking delivery so for has nothing but praise so far.

I think Jack probably just wanted the fact that games were on the line and about to ship to be a surprise. If he had said "no comment", that would have not done anything to dampen the already-circulating rumors that they were on the line. I was personally pleasantly surprised when I heard that they were shipping and don't see anything wrong with a little light-hearted trickery to create some buzz.
Look...I like TWIP and appreciate everything they have done, but if you monetize your site by asking subscribers to pay for rumors, you have to expect that the manufacturers are going to troll you sometimes.

my thoughts exactly...

once you changed from doing it for the passion, made an insiders only pay to view portion, and monetized the site, then you have to expect that you will no longer get all the inside scoops with 100% accuracy.

I gotta, say that of all things to cancel a game order over, that has to be one of the oddest.

Now on top of it all, people are going to question the bias in your reporting going forward.
Was it worth it?

Definitely think that Jack was going for the "under promise and over deliver", and he nailed it. TWIP was used as a tool in that as he told me incorrect info to report.

Jack and JJP have been great to TWIP, providing translites and other items for the monthly giveaways, Jack is very responsive, and I have always appreciated it.

From my end, I was honored when JJP asked TWIP to help with the launch of Wonka. I took three vacation days from my real job to take photos and edit photos to get them ready for JJP’s use, and get the TWIP Deep Dive ready for the launch of Wonka. I didn't receive anything in return (except for exposure for the TWIP article). I reach out to Jack and other manufacturers out of respect to make sure info on TWIP is as accurate as possible. A lot of the time I get "no comment" or "it's on the line but don't report that". This time I got false info.

I reached out to Jack immediately when I saw the Facebook post that Wonkas were shipping, we talked on the phone. I wanted to hear what happened from his end and if there was confusion or if it was a misunderstanding, but it was not.

I'm not initiating discussion on this topic, but when comments on Facebook and such are saying things like "I remember like a week ago This Week In Pinball said they weren't even on the line..... Solid source for bad info", or dendoc asks above, I will respond.

So anyway, that is why I'm cancelling. It has all left a bad taste in my mouth. I loved the game when it was first revealed and still love it. Love the theme, love the layout, love the animations and toys, I really like Joe's vision of the rules (though I haven't watched enough streams to fully get into the rules, I like to be surprised while playing). I love the music, though I may be on my own on that. Don't particularly like the sound effects right now, and want to see more of which assets are in the game. I look forward to playing it on location.

On monetizing TWIP, it needed to happen to keep the site and the podcast and the TWIPYs going so I did it the best way I could think of - monthly giveaways and certain benefits at certain support levels. The LE/Insider weekly correspondence is part of that. If I write something up for the LE/Insider supporters, and I'm questioning I am giving away too much in it or whatever, I'll reach out to the manufacturer to have them review before I send. I've had Jack and others at JJP review stuff I was sending about JJP titles, talked to Scott Danesi this week before the most recent LE article, etc. Want to make sure to not burn bridges or cause issues for a manufacturer through the LE/Insider info.

On bias reporting going forward with JJP, you can make your own judgement on that, but I will continue to remain as objective as possible, as I always have. I'll continue to reach out to Jack out of respect for him and the folks at JJP that are putting their heart and soul into creating great games.

Apologies for the length of this post, probably my longest post ever on Pinside, but wanted to add one more thing to get this thread back on track. All the other crap aside, I am VERY excited that JJP was able to meet their deadline with the first truck of games going out, and from the looks of the photos of the factory it won't be long for the next batch to go out. It seems like 2019 is a very crucial year for JJP, and them not having delays on Wonka production and setting up this year to be able to get a second game revealed after Wonka is great for JJP and GREAT for the pinball hobby!

Hi Jeff, I don't know you nor TWIP (or even what that stands for). I'm sorry to hear what happened to you. Sounds like you really still love WW and JJP. Your only punishing yourself by cancelling. Personally I would put it behind me and call my vendor and say, is it too late to get my WW?
Hop on back in, the waters fine.

#75 4 years ago

That sucks Jeff. I know you work hard to consolidate and inform us pinheads weekly. I like Jack a lot and generally appreciate his down to earth character and personality in this industry. It certainly seems off the mark for him to clearly mis-direct you.

No worries at all, just trying to explain what happened from my end in my long-winded response. I don't think Jack did it to be malicious towards me/TWIP, but more out of apathy/indifference.

It is great twip called out JJP on this matter and that twip has taken a strong stand about not interviewing or doing detailed reporting about JJP in the future. Seems like a fair and perfect solution as they can’t trust a source to be square. I agree with others stating there is no connection between this act and that of buying and owning a WonkaLE. Totally separate things.

Also about buying from a trusted Distributor, who has done nothing wrong and can sell you a great game. I plan to get a Wonka standard from Pinball Star Amusements next year. Giving things awhile to settle and for code to shine. I’ll play one when it is done and ready to be judged. Remember when a title ran for three years and you had plenty of time to get one? Wonka’s should be running for a long time and all models should be available.

Back on topic ... congrats to Op, I’m officially jelly.

Congrats to you all who are getting your games. I hope I can find one on location close so that I can play it more and hopefully get on board with an LE in time. This really was a machine I thought I'd need on release, and while that's not the case, it is exciting seeing them showing up in the hands of those who did feel the way I thought I would.

Both the Gallery and the Railroad are getting one. I believe the Gallery's has already shipped and should arrive soon.
