Because it works in test only means that the amp and basic sound sections work, it does not check or mean that the buffers on the inputs, or the signal from the CPU is getting there. As Chris said, start with the headers and cable.
If you find nothing then you can either try it in another machine to rule out cpu or sound card, or you can start scoping out pins.

Not many around to compare to, but, it is the exact same logic/vintage/coders as Black Knight,,, soooooo....
