I'm attempting to help a neighbor fix his Alien Poker machine. I've checked the power on the MPU and everything seems to be fine with respect to power levels at the TPs. I've separated the MPU and driver board, the interconnect and pins all look great. I did replace the battery holder with an external battery pack and confirmed power is fine. Previous to this, the display would briefly show the game ID and revision upon power up, but I don't see that anymore, the display is simply blank.

The diagnostic LEDs blink once when I power up the machine, and nothing comes up on the displays. When I press the diagnostic button, nothing happens, and I'm clueless to what to do next or what that even indicates! Any ideas?

I would suspect the interconnect. It may have been fine for a removal but not for a reconnection. Inspect it in the machine and see if any of the connectors broke reconnecting it. Also make sure it is well seated. A crushed or broken crimp can cause the machine not to boot.

All the pins still look good, they are all pushed through fine and look clean. It doesnt appear that any of the crimps are messed up.

If the diagnostic button (on the board?) isn't doing anything I'd suspect the roms / sockets

are you getting any lights on the playfield? Have you checked the display fuse? Trying to determine of the board is booting but you just don't have displays.

Lights are coming up on the display board. At least I can tell its back lit, and it was showing the game id and version before I fixed the battery issue. Yes, it is the diagnostic on the MPU. So, no response when pressing it could indicated a bad ROM?

Since the leds come off the cpu must at least start running, but since the button doesn't work either the circuitry for the button has failed or its not able to run the test code. I find sockets more likely than a bad interrupt+io chip. Have you tried just reseating the ROM chips? Do you have any way to verify the chips are still good?

I reseated the ROMs and nothing looked out of the ordinary. Still don’t get anything when I press the diagnostic button. One thing I do notice, is that the game id and the version is flashing very quickly on the display when I power it up, then everything goes blank.

On TP2 I’m only getting 3.7V is that normal? Is does go down to 0 when I press the diag button.
