I have a Williams system 4 flash that is kind of working. I have no background sounds. The targets all make sounds when they should and as they should, just nothing in the background. Anyone have any ideas where to start?

Default setting for Flash is no background sound. Function 33 should be set to 01.

I had the same problem - if turning the sounds on doesn't work, you may have to have the sound board rebuilt... after 30+ years, those caps have seen better days.

I just finished getting a Flash game working 100% which included rebuilding the sound card and part of the driver board... details here - I should have done more video on the sound board rebuild, but basically I replaced all the electrolytic caps on it: http://pinballhelp.com/fixing-slingshots-and-coils-that-dont-fire-on-williams-system-3/

I wouldn't bother with a 12-15kuf cap on the board. It is generally agreed that Williams went overboard spec'ing a 12k cap there and lowered it to 4700uf which also saved money. It's the same for the Type 2 sound card as well:

If that's all you have and you want to replace the caps that's fine but if you're buying a kit for it I'd get this one:

When I had my Flash it was not 33 that set the background sound I think it was 31. Yes the manual said 33 but it was not that on my machine...

Quoted from danczaz:

Ah right - forgot about that. Should have mentioned this earlier.

The answer is "it depends". Specifically on which version of the game ROM you have installed.

If you have the yellow version (normally installed on Sys4 machines), it is function 33. If you have the newer green version (normally installed on Sys6 machines), it is function 31.

You know which version you have installed when you go into diagnostics. If it says "0486" you have the yellow ROMs. If it say "1486" you have the green ROMs.

This is the best way to tell since you can run either version on either board.

The differences in the settings are outlined on the second to last page in the manual:

Thanks for reminding me!

And thanks for reminding me!!! I forgot there was Flash with MPU system 4 & 6... I bought the manuals for like 10 bucks off EBay and I randomly figured that out myself... I knew I read that somewhere... All makes sense now... Dan

These old threads are great. Thank you everybody for your help. My setting was the 31 not the 33.
