Currently the bonus stepper unit steps up correctly, the correct lights on the play field count up correctly but the problem is that when the ball hits the out hole the stepper unit counts down correctly and the lights on the play field count down but the scoring is not correct and the chime is incorrect. It is not a continuios cadence of reel turning and chime as it was before. It seems like if I have 5,000 to 10,000 in bonus the final tally is about 2,000 short and the chime is intermittent. I have cleaned the stepper unit but I am hesitant to adjust any switches without consultation.

Thank you,

Jonathan

Do you have the schematic? If not, the one for Space Mission (4-player) is here: http://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=2253. They don't have one up for your unit. Check out the bonus relay and related at 14E, and it looks like score motor Index D also may be involved.

Thank you, Yes I do have the schematic. I manually checked the steeper unit and all of the fingers land in the middle of the contacts. I cleaned and lubed the surface and now they glide nicely without any drag. Now, as the stepper unit counts down the bonus, it is correct until about half way through then no score and no chime. But, the stepper does correctly reset.

Assuming it's not a mechanical problem on the 1000 Point drum unit, and that the 1000 point relay is skipping, here's the circuit to diagnose.

Let me know if you need a phone call.

Thank you, yes skipping sounds about right. The sequence begins correctly but then slows in terms of the scoring and chimes. But the stepper unit never slows or stops or fails to reset. It sounds like Ding, Ding, Ding...Pause, Pause, Ding. A very succinct rhythm then falls off.

Ok, so what I have noticed now is that the 1,000 point relay pulses pauses and then continues. This causes the scoring real to pulse and then pause and then they both continue. Net loss of about 3k on bonus when bonus is over 5k. No problems seem to happen when the bonus is under 5k. Any ideas?

Quoted from PinballPlayer68:

the 1,000 point relay pulses pauses and then continues

Now that we know the 1000 point relay is skipping, the next step is to look at the circuit in my post #4 (above). Do you know how to use jumper wires? If not, see the "Using Alligator Jumper Wires" section in

I have a actual space odyssey schematic/manual if you need a copy. the space mission one has just enough different to drive ya batty. Just paid a tech for two hours in home time to get mine scoring right.

So, this evening I have cleaned and adjusted and inspected the bonus relay, double bonus relay, index relay and outhole relay. The situation has not improved but it has not introduced any new problems. I cleaned the 1,000 point score drum and inspected the 1,000 point relay. No improvement. It really seems as if the power is dropping out or a contact loses connection for a brief moment on the large chime coil and the 1,000 point score reel and then picks back up again only to end with a deficit of the total score count. They both work right when the bonus stepper begins its count down then fade out and become intermittent. I'm at a loss...

Did you check sm Index D?

IIRC the 1000 pt chime and the 1000 pt reel are both pulsed by the 1000 pt relay. Have you racked up a bonus then watched the relay as the ball drains? You may visually be able to see if it isn't pulsing as it should. If it is skipping it may be a switch on the score motor.

I have a Space Odyssey and when I was working through the isssues had a bonus issue. Turned out to be score motor switch alignment.

In watching the drum and relay (1,000) yes, they both slow or hesitate during bonus count down then pick up. However the end result is always 2 or 3 less than what bonus should be when working with a 10k bonus. Additionally, while the bonus count down unit is ticking down, the wiper never slows or stops. I can hear and see it clicking down correctly.

I'd look at the score motor. I also had the problem bonus coming up short. I can't remember which switch it was, I'd have to look at the schematic and I'm away from home at the moment.

Thank you to all for the contributions. We have a working Williams Space Odyssey. Problems: Loose 1,000 point sw stack, Adjusted Bonus Relay and re-adjust 1,000 point relay, out ball relay and index relay.

Thank you again,

Jonathan
