So this is my first post to Pinside and I'm pretty new to pinball. I just picked up a Williams Solar Fire and it has some issues. Doing a bit of research and it looks like my options are limited. I don't see any replacement playfields out there. It looks like it hasn't been cared for in a loooong time. So I think what I am going to do is:

- vaccum playfield
- clean with naphtha
- wax to protect field

It's not a perfect solution but hopefully I won't do any more damage until I can find a better option. Does anyone have any better ideas?

Congrats! It is a rare one for sure. There are no playfields for this one, but Marco and others have good repro back glasses.

From the looks of your pics, those inserts are very uneven and some look chipped? You might want to consider a playfield protector at this point. It should save the remaining art and help it play smoother.

Here's one option: https://www.playfield-protectors.com/Home/Details/dDl925knAEi0BEZO0GIzTw?categoryid=22&category=Playfield%20Protectors&name=Solar%20Fire%20%7C%201981

How are the boards?

THanks. Yeah, I ordered a replacement backglass first thing to make sure it didn't go out of stock. It isn't in stock at Marcos anymore. But CPR had one. I had it ordered within a couple of hours of getting it home. And I figure I can still clear coat the backglass and then I can try at least touching it up. Just for the heck of it, if nothing else. There was a pile of flaked paint just from the drive home.

I haven't had a chance to look too closely at the inserts. Or the boards either. But it wasn't working, so I know something isn't right. Nothing looked too bad at first glance though. I had to take the head off to get it out of the door they had.

I'll check out that playfield protector. Thanks for the tips! I'm going to dig into it more this weekend. I haven't even plugged it in yet.

Sound like your old school to me! Your thoughts seem inline with more experienced Pinsiders.

You're going to want to get something on that PF ASAP, it looks like it's going to flake off. Would be a tough restore for sure. PF protector (old school would have been mylar, but that would have been strictly one way, it'll go on, but coming off would probably take the rest of the ink with it) and start looking for a used replacement PF that can be restored

Just clean it and put a pf protector on it, and play it.

I have one, and it's a great player. Even with wax, you won't get a very good experience out of it due to the damage.

So I don't suppose anyone knows how to adjust the volume on it? Just thought I would mention it before starting a new thread. I was able to get it up and running. Not all the time but about half the time. But the volume seems to be really low. And I can't find any pot or knob anywhere to turn it louder. I figure there must be something, right?

Open coin door and look to the left by the tilt plumb, should be a potentiometer there.
