Hi guys, Hoping someone could help me out. I am bringing to life a Road Kings. I have sorted quite a few things out although I have two issues which I am having trouble with.

1. I don't get any play field sounds. The voices and music all work fine . When I push the sound button on the CPU I get really.....really faint sounds . I cant make out what they are supposed to be. I have replaced the ROM's . No joy.

2. Right lighting bolt is always on ? I have checked the resistors and replaced Q22 as a matter of course. I have to pull the globes as the #63 lamps get really hot!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Good day!

1. Twizzle the volume pot. Do you hear the "buzz" volume increase/decrease?
2. The transistor for the right lightning bolt is shorted. If it's Q22, then perhaps the predriver is shorted.

That was quick!
1.If I turn pot all the up I can hear an isolating sound . It does get louder and softer but still really faint.
2. Which predriver would you suggest to look at . I struggle at board level.

...and half a world away...

1. That proves that the pot and the amp are working. The problem lies upstream, in the sound circuitry on your MPU.

2. The pre-driver for Q22 is Q18, which is a 2N4401.

Test transistors with this procedure...
2N4401
NPN TO-92 package (2N3904, 2N4401, 2N5550, 2N5551, 2N6427, MPS-A13, MPS-A42, PN2222A)
Place the red lead of your DMM on the center leg of the transistor
Probe each of the flanking legs with the black lead
.4 to .6 volts is a normal reading
Readings outside of this range indicate a failed transistor

TIP-102/122
NPN TO-220 package (TIP-31C, TIP-32C, TIP-41C, TIP-102, TIP-122, MJE15030, 2N6043)
Place the black lead of your DMM on the metal tab of the transistor
Probe each of the flanking legs with the red lead
.4 to .6 volts is a normal reading. Readings outside of this range indicate a failed transistor
Probe the center leg with the red lead
A "short" should be seen. If not, then the transistor has failed.

During the week I swapped over the Background music board. I suspected the MC 6821 , desoldering that 40 legged beast was always going to be my last option. This fixed a problem I had with the music being distorted. Is the play field sound generated from the CPU or the Music board? Do you have any hints of where to start looking?
Q18 seems to measure ok .. I will swap it anyways as I have a few in my spares.
My last Pinball I brought to life was a Bally Camelot....EM's are sooooo much easier to fault find
Cheers again for your efforts

sorry to steal your thread , having problems with my road king . I adjusted the left flipper and knocked off a wire . it is white and purple . could u post a pic of the left flipper. might be able to see where it goes thanks

Here you go.... If you cant work it out from the pic let me know...CheersIMAG0230[1].jpgIMAG0230[1].jpg

Hi, I changed over the ram (u23) ....still the same . Any clues on where to look next?

#10 9 years ago

Sound problems are tough to track down. There is no rule of thumb to follow.
ROMs are easy to rule out.
You can swap the socketed 6802s.
Nothing left is simple.

as Chris says..nothing left is easy...I would check caps for the sound section on the mpu.

#12 9 years ago

I have a firepower that had a bunch of the legs on the rom were rotted and separated from the rom when removed they were stuck in the socket, so remove any chips with sockets, check for broken legs and reseat.

#13 9 years ago

Thanks guys, I will change any Caps associated with sound. Think I might replace Rom sockets as well...I will let you know how I go .....Cheers

Changed caps,op amps around the sound circuit....hoping to fluke a win . No good read somewhere about a test rom would this help and if so where I could lay my hands on one.

The problem with the r/h side lighting bolt staying on and rear flasher not working I'm missing obviously missing something it is doing my head in . Thinking of maybe changing all the lamp holders . Is it a good idea to convert to led lamps. and get rid of the #63 critters? Any recommendations on what type?. Read somewhere that you just have to remove a couple of cement resistors so the led does not stay on.I am so close and yet soooo far !

That was at best a long shot. I'd really advise sending the board to a competent tech.
A test ROM (Leon's ROM) probably won't help. Although, that is the first step to verify the digital side of the sound circuitry. You can get the ROM image here.

A good tech can fix those flashers too.

Cheers ... sorted the flasher problem . A short on the resistor board, ( a really, really fine solder bridge previous owners must of replaced/re soldered at some stage). I think i might engage a competent tech re sound . Fortunately we have plenty down under.Appreciate your feed back bloody pinballs life used to be so much simpler ....and boring .

Cool man.....Welcome back Jack.....!!!.........Joey

Too funny Joey......Revenge was mine...lol

#19 9 years ago

check the tantalum caps in addition to the electrolytic. Faint and weak volume sounds are most often the smaller caps in the sound system .

#20 9 years ago

Cheers..... I will replace and report back...

1 week later
#21 9 years ago

Fixed! Turned out to be ( u2) ,the D/A converter. I should of changed that one first I didn't like U2 before and now like them even less!......Cheers for all the advise I got .Really appreciated it.

#22 9 years ago

Do you have 2 RK's....???....it's in your collection twice....it really is a great game isn't it..?..my only beef is a few more call outs would have been nice...but then it was 1986.........Joey
