Greetings -

Yesterday I was rebuilding the player unit on my '76 Williams Grand Prix. First I took apart all the mechanical bits and put them in the ultrasonic. Then I moved on to taking apart the snow shoe assembly. Once I had it removed, I set it face down and went over to check on the ultrasonic. I came back, lifted up the snow shoe from the work bench, and saw the parts (spring, washer) in the below picture.

I have no idea where these parts came from. I'm pretty methodical with all of this, reading forum posts/watching videos before I do anything, taking apart very slowly and taking lots of pictures along the way while also following the steps from my research.

I do not recall seeing these parts during disassembly, nor do they show up in any of my pictures. I also don't see them in any videos/etc online.

One of the coils on the unit had been replaced at some point, so my best guess is that these were put in as part of that work and for whatever reason I just didn't see them pop out during disassembly (the replacement coil is smaller than the OEM, and although functional, they had to get creative to make the replacement work). Picture of the replacement coil is also attached.

Anyway, I thought I'd double check here before moving on.

Thanks much,
Matt

Not sure but I wish I had a dollar for every spring, washer, screw and bulb I’ve found laying on the bottom board or on top of relays when I acquire a machine.

Hopefully that’s all it is.

Looks more like a pop bumper spring, not from that unit in any event.

The parts manual (available on Planetary Pinball's site) will show the breakdown of those units too!

I just serviced my player unit on my Williams Fan-tas-tic machine and I did not have a spring like that in the player unit.

Worse than that. This should be under the “hacks” postings. As previous owner.

After checking all wiring and connections it still kept not working correctly. I ran my fingers over those contacts and found that one not making full contact.

The original spring was broken and I found a spring and plastic washer to function - never got around to finding the correct spring.

Must have come apart during the cleaning

Hi Nick!

Lol guess I hold have reached out to you first - TBH I'd assumed if these parts weren't part of the factory build, then they pre dated your ownership.

I'll send some pics along soon, I went to clean one score reel, one thing led to another and now I'm almost done with disassembling/cleaning all the drum units and steppers in the head.

Play on!

There is still that hack at the alternator armature. Couldn’t get it work right until I moved the spring connection - keep me posted!

What the heck is going on with that coil plunger?
It looks semi-clear like lexan with a metal cap on the end.
Am I looking at it wrong?

It sure does, but I think it is just the angle. I believe the place that looks clear is actually the flat face of a cut out. Similar to this:

Yea, it's a normal plunger. It looks funny cause of the angle, and the sleeve is in backwards (the sleeve is the transparent bit). Also there's no coil stop so the plunger can go back further than it should.
