My display started showing vertical lines through it. I read that it was likely a problem with the actual display so I bought another one, plugged it in and I still have the same problem. Does this mean that the ribbon cable is bad? What else could cause this?

#2 3 years ago

Check the display driver board. Probably a burnt resistor

Unless it’s several at which point I’d suspect ribbon

I don’t see anything burnt. I tried to get good pics of the board. Do you see something wrong with it?

What does the display itself look like? Can you get a good picture of that?

This is the one I removed. I bought a newer pulled from working one and it does the same thing.

Ok so since those are in a pattern like that I would bet it’s the ribbon. Try flipping both ends to see if the lines move. Also if you have any other WPC games you could try swapping the cables to see if it fixes it.

In my 12 years of working on games, I never seen a DMD cause this issue. If you reseat this ribbon cable and it goes away for a while and issue returns, then it will be time for a new ribbon cable. Also be sure all the male board header pins are straight. Bent ones definately can cause intermittent connection inside the ribbon cable.

Replacement cables can be found here. https://www.docentelectronics.com/httpdocs/AmusementGames/Pinball/Bally/BallyPinball.htm

I replaced the cable with a new one from Marco and still have the same issue.

Pins are unbent. Board looks ok. The lines are always there even if I wiggle them.

Well, do you have some place you can test that PinLED DMD controller, maybe a friend's game? That is the next suspected cause of failure.

Oh, before you worry about that, can you press on all the parts on the MPU that are in IC sockets?

Another possibility is that one of the other boards connected to the ribbon cable is holding a data or address line in a static state. You can exclude that by not connecting the ribbon cable to that board.

Thank you so much. I ended up pushing on all of the connectors and socketed chips on the main board and then the problem went away. Freaking awesome you’re just freaking awesome thank you both so much for helping me!
