Hi, trying to bring back to life a barn find (a real barn, we had to ask the cow to move when we picked it up!). I got most everything working with the exception of one thing. About 4-5 times a new game is started it runs till 10 balls are available. a few times it actually continues to run but will eventually stop. I thought it might be the coin unit but I'm not sure. any help would be appreciated.

Clean the contact plate of the balls to play unit.
After that lube the plate with a DROP of light oil and wipe it almost dry.
Reassemble the wiper fingers and move the disk a few times.

The machine does not see the 5th ball switch now and steps to the last step on the unit (10th ball)

This is good advice, but I recommend "superlube" synthetic grease over oil, which will dry out and get gummy over time-- causing more problems than it fixes.

I have a tube of Bally grease I picked up years ago, will that work as well?

It will work in the short term, but it's a natural grease so it will eventually dry out and gum up. I specifically recommend Superlube and nothing else.
