Hello,
First time posting on here.
I have a williams jubilee I picked up not too long ago and have been trying to get it to work. Im pretty logically oriented so I have a good understanding on how ems work. I have went through the stepper units and made sure the contacts are clean and mechanically function and have went through the game and made sure all the switches move properly (active and inactive) states. The problem I am running into is that most of everything works as it should with the exception of the advance scoring process. If either the advance/ 3-advance relays are activated (any advance switch on PF) the 15 amp fuse blows. I have narrowed it down to the leaf switch on both relays that "Energizes advance unit step up coil". I have tested this by only allowing this leaf switch to connect and it blows the fuse. I have manually step upped the advance stepper unit and on ball drain the bonus counts down and stepper steps down back to home pos without blowing the fuse. I am at a loss here as it seems to be possibly a dead short?? Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you might have a shorted step up coil on the advance unit. De-solder it and check with an ohm meter. If it reads near zero ohms, you'll need a new coil.

do you have to desolder it to check the ohms?

Generally when checking for resistance you need to remove a coil from the circuit to get an accurate reading. In this case you are just looking for a short, so the actual resistance reading isn't that important. Since it blows the fuse, it is a dead short so it should read zero ohms. So, you can probably get away with checking it while it's still in the circuit.

Check it in circuit and if you get zero ohms, you've probably got a shorted coil. In which case you will have to remove it anyway.

I assumed as much. It was a bit hard to get a good reading on it so I went ahead and pulled it. It came back with .7/.8 ohms so not a zero probably bad enough where it would blow the fuse. Upon pulling the wrapper it looks as though someone previous has tried to fix the coil since some of the wire had been unwrapped stripped of the coating and rewound. Guess I will buy a new one.

That coil clearly got stuck on at one time. You'll find burnt wrappers like that on lock relay coils, alternating relay coils, even flipper coils because they get energized for longer periods of time. That step up coil should just get a quick hit with each advance. It never stays locked on. To get that burnt, It had to have been locked on at one time.

When you replace it be sure it doesn't stay energized for too long. Whatever caused it in the first place may still be there. Most likely would be an End-Of-Stroke switch didn't open.

Yes sir. Normally when I go through a game after getting it if it isnt working already I check all the leaf stacks to make sure they have open and closed positions prior to even powering up the game. Ive seen a few toasty lock coils thankfully I havent had to deal with any until this game which im replacing as well. Thanks for the assistance. Guess we will see what happens when I get the new ones in. If all goes well I will be able to start taking everything else apart and cleaning for a lifetime and bringing it all back together again.
