I'm working on a Williams Hyperball driver board that has a bad 2N6548 in the lamp matrix. Looks like these are not available. Can someone confirm if a 2N6427 or a MPSA13 is a suitable replacement? Thanks!

Funny - just last weekend I was working on a friends Hyperball driver board and need this transistor too!

Google research says the CEN-U45 is a readily available replacement.

That part # will work but it's way overkill and much more expensive. The MPSA13's are only $.20 a piece.

A friend had a donor driver board that I robbed a 2N6548 off from so I'm set now.

If someone could confirm the MPSA13 or the 2N6427 will work it would be appreciated for future reference. Thanks!

a mpsu45 or a 2n6549 will work. different package on the mpsa13 not enough switching power.

Not overkill at all. The original part and the MPSU45 and the CEN-U45 are good for 2 amps. The MPSA13 and 2N6427 are not equivalent as they can only switch 1/2 an amp.

2n6427 is used on wms 3-7 for the lamp column predriver. Is Hyperball circuit different?

Ahh ok good to know. I must have misread something when I was looking into it. The 2N6548 I robbed off a donor board did the trick and my column of lamps is working again.

Thanks for the info!

Andrew, the Hyperball lamp matrix is actually an 8X8 and a 4X8 lamp matrix with common columns but separate drivers for the 8X8 and a 4X8 columns. They use a single 2N6548 as the predriver to drive both the 8X8 and a 4X8 column transistors (TIP42) with the same signal in each of the lamp matrices.
