This is one of the craziest things I've even seen.No reason for it.

From the photo in post #1, it looks like the original 2-prong Bakelite plug snapped, or was otherwise unusable. I'm guessing the then owner of the machine did not manage to find a new plug and jery-rigged a fix to get the game playing again in 3 ball mode.
