To all High Speed owners and anyone else that knows the answer to my questions:

I am struggling with the two switches on the ramp on my Williams High Speed. Sometimes they fire and sometimes they don't.

My first question is how they are supposed to behave. From my observation it appears that they alternate when you shoot a ball up the ramp. That is, a ball will go up the ramp and the left switch will activate and route the ball down the left wire rail and the next time a ball goes up the ramp the right switch will activate and route the ball down the right wire rail. Is this correct?

Because I am seeing that sometimes the ball just goes all the way thought the ramp and out the other side without going down either wire rail and sometimes it goes down the left side mostly and the right side not so often. This is especially problematic when you "get away" and you are supposed to get three balls in multi ball play however because the right side rarely fires you usually only get two balls in multi ball.

I have run through the switch tests and yes the left side mostly fires correctly and the right side rarely fires. I just had the ramp off and fixed some cracks so I guess I will remove it again and work on the switches.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

My suggestion is to repair (or replace) the switches until they are working 100% perfectly every time. This goes for all switches, especially kickouts and troughs. Any "glitch" or missed switch will foul the MPUs interpretation of the state of the game and the location of the balls and result in unpredictable behavior. Test the ramp switches through use of a ball (not your finger)by rolling it repeatedly across the switch at speed while the game is in switch edge test. It has to register a hit every single time.

Until all the stoplights are lit, the ramp diverter should alternate left and right. Once lit, the ramp should send you all the way through to the right side of the playfield (no diverter) in order to run the red light. After that, the ramp should again alternate so you can lock balls left and right for multi ball.

That’s how mine works anyway.

Yes that is how mine works too. Additionally, when starting a new ball, it allows the ball to run all the way though the ramp - just the first time - so you get another shot at the ramp. The it switches over to alternating between the left and right diverters.

I ended up taking the ramp off again and adjusting the gap on the switches. The right side gap was way too big because I tried to use my fingers to adjust the switch instead of my trusty switch tool (could not get it in there while the ramp was installed). So, my bad. After adjusting the switches correctly I hooked up my DMM in continuity mode and tested the switches several dozen times to make sure they fire correctly. All fixed now and working well.

I really like how fast this pin can be when setup correctly, cleaned and waxed.

Thanks to all who replied to my question!
