Hello folks... I picked up a Williams High Speed yesterday that seems to be mostly working. The only thing that I can't get going is the music. Sound effects are all there. But no music. When the music is supposed to start I hear a single 1/4 second note then nothing. This happens when the music is supposed to transition as well (IE: just before multiball, etc), I can hear the single 1/4 second note then nothing. It also happens in the TEST menu.

I've determined the music is handled by the satellite board rather than the sound ROM in the main board (this is my first Williams pin). I've wiggled the connectors on the satellite board during gameplay in hopes of diagnosing a cold solder joint... nothing. I pulled the single ROM from the board hoping to find it bad, nope, it checksums out correctly.

There is no PHYSICAL indication of what could be wrong. At this point I am suspecting the problem may be whatever synth chip they use (Yamaha)? But I figured I'd ask the experts as I've only ever worked on 4 or 5 pins and none of them Williams.

Can anyone suggest where I can look next?

Thanks!

Well you hit the most common issues, cold solder joints and ROMs. I would say not likely to be the synth chip, but you could check the CPU, PIA and amp.

...and the ribbon cable.

Keeping in mind that I am somewhat of a newb...

...how does one test these components? I do have a test light... and a meter... but that is about it. I supposed if I had the parts in question on hand it would mean just swapping but I don't... I'd prefer to find out what is causing the issue and replacing that component rather than shotgunning the whole thing ... but I may be stuck between a rock and a hard place I suppose.
