Hello! Just got a Williams flash a few weeks ago as my first machine. I’ve been playing it for awhile but I’ve blown through about 4 fuses in F5. The failure is very sporadic, sometimes during gameplay, it failed right when I put a new fuse in. Most recently fuse didn’t fail but the Rottendog MPU reset.

Troubleshooting to date: Checked all voltages recommended on home pinball repair on the power unit. 5.1V was steady on the 3J6 pins, F5 fuse was receiving around 12.8V. Odd thing is I disconnected every connection except from the 3J1 and 3J2, did some cleaning, put it back together and now I’m getting 11.8V across the F5 fuse but still a consistent 5V on the 3J6. At this voltage is also when the machine reset during gameplay. As far as I can tell the rectifiers are is good condition and putting out proper voltage. I also added the safety fuses to the rectifier.

I can see some bulging on the C11 capacitor but I didn’t think this would affect the F5 fuse.

With the sporadic failure mode, I’m at a loss. My last thought is maybe a pin connection? I was thinking about pulling the trigger on a replacement board but would like to get your thoughts. Thanks!

Are you using a 4 amp Slow-Blow Fuse in F5? I would switch to a SB fuse first. Then reflow all the solder joints on the power supply board connectors. Might want to replace the Electrolytic Capacitors in the 5 volt circuit and maybe even the D7/D8. They sell capacitors kits, I would just replace all of them on power supply board. Good Luck

Is there any risk to using a slow-blow fuse? Currently on a fast blow as OEM recommends. I can certainly give it a try to see if it allows me to troubleshoot some of the other problems i'm having.

I should take a stab at reflowing all the solder joints before I purchase a new one.

Thanks!

Checked the Flash paperwork again and the schematics has a 4 amp and on a part list has the 4 amp slow blow, so not sure which is correct.

Interesting. Which part list? I might not have that documentation. I’m mainly going off pinball repair sites for the fast blow.

Nearly all pinball fuses are supposed to be slow blow. Especially in the power supply, where charging of the empty filter capacitor takes a large power surge at startup. I would only use fast fuses in display circuits.

Here's the paperwork on where I found the 4 amp sl-bl fuse.

Thanks for the upload! I have some arriving today and I’ll give it a try!

Popped a slow blow in there. It still eventually went. Apparently something is wrong downstream on my 5v line. This time the displays didn’t even light up so the MPU wasn’t powered up.

I tried a new power board as well and same results minus the blow fuse. I’m stuck right now.
