Hello Everyone,

Me and my brother have been expanding our pinball collection a little at a time over the past few years and have finally started moving out into Solid State Machines inbetween the EM's due to some difficulity in finding projects that interest us.

Our most recent aquisition has been a Williams Fire! And we got it at a very good deal as a project.

The game was sadly left with batteries in the head for many years and they caused some corrosion.

The corrosion is not too bad, and the gameplay has not been effected; however, it seems like the corrosion could have caused some issues for the displays. I'm not sure if the corrosion caused the problems we are seeing or not.

As you can see from the video posted above, one of the displays isn't functioning at all, and another has some weird artifacting.

What would you guys recommend in order to repair this?

Should we spring for some new boards? If so what ones do you think the machine needs?

Im sure the replacements will have to be reproductions, unless someone has some boards from Fire they want to part with.

What brands do you all recommend for replacement boards? Our Police Force has some Rottendog boards in it that it came with; however, I've heard mixed reviews about Rottendog and don't want to make a mistake by going with their boards.

Any advice that you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Alex

First place to start. Let's see that MPU board, above and below the battery holder.

Hello LTG,

Thanks for your suggestion. I will go over some of this data. Maybe something here will be helpful for me. I saw the section on corrosion. Is there anything else you'd suggest I take a hard look at?

As requested, Pinball Maniac, here are some images of the boards. Under bright light it seems like the corrosion is worse than I originally noticed it to be!

If there is something else I can take a photo of or if you need a more detailed photo of something, please only let me know!

I appreciate everyone's help so far!

Regards
Alexander

Yes. Might be beyond repair.

Thank you LTG, I went ahead and sent him a message.

The MPU does not have a lot of damage. If you are sending it, I would send the display as well to test, in case there are 2 issues.

Thank you for your tip PinballManiac! I will do that if I send the boards in!

Would be cheaper than buying new boards. There are some questionable quality on new MPU replacement boards out there.

I am expecting the display board to be ok.

Howdy again BTF,

I talked to Chris and he believes that the board is beyond reasonable repair and that it would be better to get a new one.

I guess that means that I am on the hunt for an aftermarket board or an undamaged replacement. Do you have any suggestions besides Rottendog boards?

We have a Rottendog Board inside of our Williams Police Force (it came pre-installed), and I haven't had a single problem with it; but, I've heard some bad things about Rottendog products as of recently.

Do you know of any other replacement board makers or is that pretty much the best choice?

Alexander

There may be others willing to work on it. I have too much on my plate to take it on.

You would have to PM DumbAss to get a price of a new board. Well worth it. Best board available right now.

This board can be repaired in the right hands.
The battery holder should be removed and acid neutralized.

Howdy PinballManiac,

Thanks for the tip. I'll continue to talk to guys that do repairs on boards and see if anyone thinks it could be repaired. Right now it seems like the jury is split about if I should repair or replace, I guess I'll look into a few more opinions and make my decision based on if anyone wants to attempt repairing them.

I will certainly look into DumbAss's boards, a quick browse showed me hes got some very attractive products!

I appreciate your help very much

Alexander

Hello Pintec,

Thanks for your advice.

I'm going to go head and pull the boards out and remove the battery holder. I'll clean what I can and if I choose to repair the board, replace the holder. Maybe cleaning the acid damaged areas will help out!

Alexander
