After I cleaned and reassembled the Match Unit, if the nut holding the brass contract arms are too tight, the shaft doesn't turn. Making the lock washer and nut loser allows easy turning. However, I think it's too lose and might come undone; should I shorten the springs or am I missing something?

Loosen it up so it all moves. the lock nut does not need to be fully 'locked down' just to apply some pressure and all will be fine.

What game is this for? Different match units were used by different makers, and even by one maker in different years.

It is a Williams Stardust. Thanks for all the answers.

Make sure the spacer tube is inside and down in the hole in the circuit board. The way to do this is make sure it's fully seated before tightening the two screws that hold the board on. If you tighten the screws then put the spacer on, it will likely only go on as far as the surface of the board, which then means when you crank down the nut, you're just sandwiching the wheel down tight against the tube.
