I've got to most likely replace a side of the backbox on my fish tales and just wondering if anyone knows officially what type of plywood as used in the construction of williams pinball cabinets?

Some cabs of that era, like WH2O, were made from 3/4" plywood with a skin of Medium Density Fiberboard on the face.

That way the face was already primed and ready for silkscreening; no sanding, filling, boatmen......

slight correction, its MDO (medium density overlay) not MDF (medium density fiberboard).

MDO is a waterproof paper layer that is applied to the plywood. Its the same material used by sign makers for external signs.

I use it as the optional material for cabinet kits since it gives a perfectly smooth , grain free finish.

Yep, I've been having all my replacement cabs CNCed from preprimed MDO.

Giant time saver vs filling, sanding, priming

Whatever they used it is the baloney of woods. I did my first and last sticker job on a Funhouse recently. My background is 15+ years doing highend decorative finishes and have done everything from venetian plastering 2 story foyers to woodgraining heirloom furniture repairs and I have NEVER come across a more unpredictable surface than whatever pallet puss they used to cobble together those games.

Good luck!
