I started working on my recent Blackout pickup last night and noticed both flipper plates are missing the corner. Is this a common failure from old Williams games or some back yard modification ?

Never seen this. Looks like a clean break.

Both plates are missing about the same amount making me wonder if it was intentional for some reason (though I can't imagine why)

Maybe a defective batch of plates?

That's what happens when there is no rubber bumper in the plate. The metal flipper pawl keeps slamming into the metal plate like a hammer. Eventually, the metal plate breaks off from the beating it takes. That's why Williams started putting rubber bumpers on the flipper base plates.

Had the same thing on my Cosmic Gunfight, with the coil stop just kind of floppin’ around in what was left of the plate. I decided to upgrade the flipper mechs to the WPC style. It’s great for future serviceability and you get more return snap with the external springs, if you’re not concerned with keeping it stock - and it’s easily reversible if you are.

It was from CL, I'm pretty happy with it so far. A few things to sort out but overall in really great shape and a good addition to the collection.
