This has been a long time coming. I just set up my Alien Poker from my storage project games last night and got this thing playing pretty good. I had already purchased a new backglass from Planetary Pinball and a new plastic set from CPR. Great stuff there! I missed this one. I had it set up about 8 years ago in my first house. I've since moved and it was buried behind a bunch of other projects.

Glad to be back playing this one. I was playing it last night and thought "man..... I wish this was a multi-ball game. There are already 3 kick outs you can lock balls into like Firepower.....

And then I read this thread. Probably not going to do a multi ball mod. I didn't think of all the points I'd be loosing!

It seems I have one small issue remaining on this one though.

It seems to be about every 10-15 games or so, when you hit the start button to begin, it will automatically add a player 2, even though the button was only hit once. Ugh...... almost there!

I have scoured over this thing 2-3 times now making sure that no switches are touching anywhere and there is nothing else like a loose diode to be found either. I've had a few games with random issues and found someone just wrapped a diode around the contact end instead of soldering it so it would cause strange behaviors like this.

I've gone into the diagnostic test mode and no switches are stuck on. All switches register the proper number when hit, but it seems almost randomly sometimes that when you hit a switch the number will show up correctly and then go right back to the switch number that you hit previously. It doesn't do it often, it's almost like when hitting the start button, you hit about 10 switches or so and then boom, back to the previous switch number.

Strange.

Probably something simple like a failing diode on a switch somewhere, but you have to remove a lead for each diode all around the machine to test them and get a good reading to find the right one..... I hope I don't have to do all of that!

#52 5 years ago

I have seen the same issue with an alien poker I had before same thing. Every once in a while it would start a 2 player game. Never did find fix the issue.
Are you using the rotten dog board or original?

#53 5 years ago

I've got all original boards in this one. There is no battery acid damage at all. I've also replaced the 5101 with NVRam. There was no change after replacing the 5101, which I wasn't suspecting as the issue, but it's great to have it on free play and save the high score.

#54 5 years ago

I'll have to check if it's an actual system 6 or a system 6A board, but I wouldn't think that should matter.

I have thought it could either be a diode going bad on a switch somewhere, or maybe the sockets for the flipper/game rom need to be changed. They are NOT of the scanbe type that I typically remove from the Williams "system" boards to replace though, so.... who knows? Maybe there is some goofy thing wrong and I should get a new set of roms? Not yet.....

#55 5 years ago

I rarely have had the same problem. I just assumed I had fat fingered the button during startup. I’m running original 6a boardset with new interconnect.

#56 5 years ago

My AP adds a second player also from time to time. It hasn't done it in a long while now though.

#57 5 years ago

Hmm sounds like a common issue
I’m sure it will end up being something silly and one day one of us will come up with an answer.

Multiball mod kills bonus X

I have been debating the PP bg.
I have seen the bg resto and I prefer the mirroring.

The PP backglass is awesome. Just do it! You'll have it in a couple days as opposed to 3 months later like the bgresto one, that doesn't have a mirroring option.

I have purchased 2 different EM rifle game backglasses from bgresto and have been very happy with them as well. It is a great option for glasses that will never be silkscreened again and/or don't have mirroring in the originals. Their process has slowly evolved over time to get better as well. There are a TON of different glasses available now. I purchased a Chicago Coin Twin Skeet Shoot from them and sent in a Genco Davy Crockett that they reproduced for me and is available to others. You just have to be patient as it does take a few months until it arrives.

Does anyone know if there are different levels of game code for Alien Poker? Maybe some of us have a version of the code that has this add an extra player in it? Hmmm......

Happens on System 6 games with green flipper ROMs. Possibly a failing diode that causes this.

#61 5 years ago

So.... maybe I should just replace the flipper roms? Maybe I'll swap a set from another game I've got and see if the problem is still there. If not..... time for some new flipper roms possibly.

Quoted from RustyLizard:

Well I am restoring mine so might be a good time to change out diodes.

#63 5 years ago

Swapped in my green flipper roms from my Firepower I've had for 8+ years and no issues in years. Add-a-player issue is still present.

Maybe I'll swap out mpus and driver boards at some point and see if either of those have an issue to narrow it down to one of those or a cabinet issue.

#64 5 years ago

I dont think changing mpu/driver will help as i have switched to rottendog combo and issue is still there.

#65 5 years ago

Anyone done the pf overlay?
Pics?

#66 5 years ago

will be doing one soon.... I have the cab done just playfield left.

#67 5 years ago

Can't say I am a fan of the cab art.
It would be a nice cab to experiment on.
Already eyeing illuminated flipper buttons.
My cab is very dark, art hardly shows.
I looked a long time for a nicer playfield.

Always thought the overlay would make a nice spare pf if I wanted to experiment with the multiball mod and had to cut the trough larger.

#68 5 years ago

I did the original Art on mine but i clear coated it ....really makes the colours pop more IMO
Ya i was hoping for a remake soon but that seems to be dragging on so ill probably get to the overlay first.

#69 5 years ago
Quoted from Stretch7:

Who sells the stencils for Alien Poker?

I also have an overlay here from the guy on eBay. Never the best quality, but it's the only option out right now I think.

#70 5 years ago

Pinball pimp sells them.
Yes these overlays are from classic arcades but they are taken from the films and look correct so I expect them to turn out nice

#71 5 years ago

These are one of the cabinets I did couple months ago for someone else
Mine is the same but with a white bottom
And I’m going with the powder colour.

Nice looking cabinet! Are those PDI flipper bats? I was going to do mine in red Titan all around. The blue looks pretty decent.

#73 5 years ago

They are teal from pinball centre and yes light blue from titan
I originally did some green and blue but just liked blue all around.

Looks like my Alien Poker is now done. I went through the row and column that the credit button is in one more time. Nothing weird going on at all. I adjusted the credit button switch to give a little more "wipe" when pressed, and cleaned it up nice and bright. Haven't had a single extra player added in over 2 hours of play time now. Must have been getting a little spark or something now and then when you pressed it and the contacts pulled away from each other. Not sure what else to think on that one.

#75 5 years ago
Quoted from Squeakman:

Wow - me too! I've just been ignoring it. Sometimes I don't notice until I launch the first ball of the second player when the drop targets restart with none down. I've been content to ignore it but next time I've got the playfield lifted I think I will follow in Pin-up 's footsteps and tune the credit switch.

I’m looking to replace my posts in my ap, anybody have any idea which ones to buy? Was looking at Marcos and they have a 1 inch and a 1 1/8. Measuring mine it’s more like 1 1/16. Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone have a list of needed coil sleeves? I'd like to order them and swap out vs dismantling coil mechs to measure, etc. Thanks.

#78 4 years ago

I just got my board set back from a week at the flat rate repair salon.
It's alive.
Lots to still fix, but alive.

No ball to trough at start, weak left flipper, dead far right flipper, still have to see what targets and holes register.

#79 4 years ago

I am in the middle of putting a playfield back together that I bought disassembled. Can anyone confirm that this is the correct default orientation of the ace kickers? I guess I just don't understand how they reset if so because the plungers go against gravity? Anyone able to confirm or post a pic of the correct orientation?

You're missing a spring there... 10-128

spring (resized).pngspring (resized).png

#81 4 years ago

Thanks! That makes perfect sense. Second issue, I have several broken screw holes on the plastic bracket for the drop target circuits. Is there a replacement for these brackets anywhere?

Bottom right in the picture.

I believe swinks makes some 3D printed ones. Unfortunately these are a weak spot with these horseshoe targets assemblies.

#83 4 years ago

I just had to replace all of mine on my scorpion. I got some 3d printed and they work great.

Ordered some of those. Thanks for the heads up Zacaj.

Next issue. Can anyone confirm that the pop bumper light wiring is as simple as one leg to dioded wire from wiring harness and the other leg to the bare GI wire?

Shouldn't be GI, should be to another row/column wire. Might just look like a GI wire though

So the pop bumper light circuit is not connected to the GI circuit? I'll take some pictures of the wiring mess I'm looking at just to make sure I have this right.

#87 4 years ago

I have four of these lugs with a diode, all coming from various red wires. Each of these diodes should attach to one leg of the pop bumper light socket.

I then have the yellow/black wire attached to some bare wire. This should attach to the other leg of each pop bumper.

This matches the lamp matrix, just want to make sure that I have the logic correct and that I can connect them all to the same yellow/black wire.

Do I need a special board to run LEDs?

I see they sell a board for older stern and bally...

Do you only need six of the drop target pieces 3d printed? (looks like 6) at least 1 on each end of the assembly and one between each target.

Six yes. You need non ghosting Leds but no special boards

#90 4 years ago

Just got my boards back yesterday and put it back together. Works great except for some drop target issues I need to sort.

I went with some unbranded 2SMD frosted “cool” LEDs in mine. No issues, worked perfectly. $50 for 100.

I just ordered my LEDs
Tech coming by in 2 days.
Have finish the black rubber and superbands before he gets here.

Also found a $10 Imperial Palace LV chip I may want to find a spot for.

#92 4 years ago

I feel like maybe the cool white frosted above the PF are a bit harsh. Might swap those out at some point. I dunno.

For now my biggest issue is figuring out how to mount these dumb drop target boards with a bunch of the plastic mounting posts blown out. Ugh.

My tech buddy dropped and after a few hours we are up and running.
Still has a few weird issues.
The flippers score and my 2 step is middle then outer (is that correct?)
2 of my displays have 2 columns out.
LEDs come this week. Noticed the pops don't like them.

Done. Mine pretty much all disintegrated getting the boards off to clean. Bleh. Should have everything back in order tonight.

I don't have an AP but i'm picking up a Laser Cue project this afternoon (and since the Laser Cue club is kinda (X_X) I thought I'd post here). Where did you pick up the new red drop targets? Also, if I need some new brackets for the boards, would you (or anyone) be able to print some off for others to buy?

I had these ones printed:

I didn’t get them particularly cheap but I’m told it’s like $1.50 in material costs... :/

Are those new drop targets you have in the pic? Can I ask where you got them?

I think I paid like $2 for 14 of them. Printing markup is crazy

Just new stickers. Ordered them from Ministry of Pinball. Something like $15 shipped.
