Any ideas? I'm just finishing off Magic Town add a ball version.
Its have a lot of work done to it and on its first start worked ok, sort of anyway. Meaning, I've noticed that sometimes it's not allowing all the score reels to zero, yet will still play.

I have been going through it and noticed that if the reels are all under number 5, they will go to zero when starting from game over. I have also noticed that it will sometimes, if switching on from cold, I.e switched off say on ball 3, it counts down to and returns up to ball 5, ready to begin. It will, irrespective of what score is shown, reset the reels correctly.

It seems to me that the time being used whilst the ball count is going up and down, in that time the reels are getting enough of a timed pulse to reset properly.
Looking at the schematic, the impulse cam shows 10 teeth, and its switch stack is going up and down during motion in time with the reels so to my mind, is a timing issue. Indeed, this 10 toothed cam shows the various switches that would seem to control this function yet whatever I try, it's not curing the problem.

I have looked at the reset, game over relays, and these appear ok. No doubt it's just something simple but after a good few hours, I'm no close to finding the fault!

Should the ball count unit always step up and down, or simply count to 5 from zero? If it always did the former, there would be enough time for it to reset to zero correctly.

Thoughts welcome!

I can check my Magic Town when I get home under a few different conditions, I thought it stepped up and down unless it was already at zero.

Can you show the score motor on the schematic? Usually the score motor will keep running until the reels are reset.

You can see on your schematic that the zero switches on the score reels keep the reset relay energized so focus on that. Is the reset relay dropping out early?

I'll need to see a high quality scan of the schematic from (for example) Staples ($2) or Kinkos ($6)

Excellent observations. While the Impulse cam on the Score Motor does have 10 teeth, the Score Motor itself turns in increments of just 180 degrees or half a turn. Any condition that calls for the Score Motor gets just a half turn so the Score Reels only get 5 reset pulses during a Score Motor cycle. At the end of that half turn the Score Motor circuit is reevaluated to determine whether the Score Motor is still needed.

The Reset relay usually calls for the Score Motor to run during reset as shown here in the schematic for the replay version, Magic City.

The Reset relay should stay active until all four Score Reels have reached the zero position as determined by the Score Reel zero position switches in the left most red box. Your Reset relay could be disengaging prematurely either because one or more of the zero position switches is opening early, or because the lock in switch on the Reset relay (red box on the right) isn't closing.

Since Magic Town is an Add A Ball game there is likely extra circuitry not shown here to keep the Score Motor running until the Ball count reaches 5. In cases where that takes two Score Motor cycles the Score Reels are given the 5 extra pulses they need to all reach zero.

It would appear to be yes. I have noticed that when the motor runs for a longer time, the reels get a chance to zero so it's a timing issue I think. ( I've attached another closeup image of that)

And I think that where the ball counter goes down and up again is actually correct, unless it's already at game over as it then counts up to 5, as it should. The BCU was completely rebuilt anyway so I'm certain there are no issues with that.
I'll take a close look at the score reels too, hopefully, this is where the problem is.

Anyway, I'm tired out with it so tomorrow is another day.

Thanks, Mark.

I'll take another squint at it tomorrow and see if I can see where I'm going wrong. Fresh pair of eyes and all that. I'll keep you all posted and thanks again.

Thanks, Howard.
If I cant resolve it then I'll get my schematic copied. Fortunately, it's a good one that I bought from PBR.

Mine if the ball count is at zero will reset the score reels and then step up the ball count to five.

If the game is reset with any balls on the count and score shown it will step down the ball count to zero while resetting the reels and then step it up to five balls.

Hope this helps.

Fixed! Thanks to everyone who helped out. The problem was two fold. The first was, upon dismantling the reset relay, I had 2 burnt out switch contacts. I noticed some sparks when the reset was in operation so that wasn't right, obviously. ( see image) And I also re-gapped the index switch stack which made the motor run for longer so as to allow a full reset so the timing issue is now ok.
The machine will now go to zero (with the reels set to 1111 so as to give maximum travel) from game over, and the ball count follows that to give five balls
