I own a newer style santa fe (full size) and I think it will fit but it will be tight... I haven't had one in mine, but the opening is 29-30" if I remember correctly. I think I read somewhere that the sport model actually has a taller opening, So I imagine it would fit in the sport model fine.
Good Luck!
I'll be following, since I'd be curious as well.

Says up to 2012 fit, I'm guessing newer models not tested.
Guys truck broke down on the way here and that's what he rented to complete the trip. Fingers crossed
I had a 2006 Santa Fe....fit perfectly. Broke down, bought a new 2016. Pin will not fit. Head will have to be taken off. Mind you, this is the Sport. There's another model (7 seater) that I believe a pin will fit in.
The opening is shorter in the full size than the sport, so it sounds like the head will need to come off...
Do we have a list of non-truck vehicles capable of comfortably hauling a pin?
Here's my start
Vehicle. Out of box. In box. Comments
2011 Ford Escape - Yes. Yes. Be carefull of soft bumper cover
1996 Ford Escort. Yes. No. Not comfortably, hatchback only, cant close hatch.
Lol... Ahh the memories of wedging pins in a hatchback. I swear in my younger days I was genuinely insane.

Yes, we have a list. It's the pinwiki linked in post 3.
usually, if you think the head needs to come off, you can get by with simply removing the hinges and sliding the head down further towards the lockdown bar. you can shave a couple inches off the height doing that.
Well, as the guy who rented the Jeep Patriot............ it DON'T fit !!! The interior of the Jeep is plenty big enough but for some dumb reason, the tail gate hatch opening is considerably smaller. Horrible design !!!!! The POTC wouldn't fit by about 4 inches.
All dimensions are rounded down. Vertical Height at center = 28"
Horizontal measurement varies alot depending on where you are looking.
*In picture, dimensions from top to bottom read: 43", 38", 42"
*Distance from halfway up hatch all the way across is 43"
*Distance between the wheel wells is 38"
*Distance at the widest part near the bottom of hatch to the passenger wheel well is 42"
A new Dodge Caravan = NO PROBLEM !!!!
what did you round the vertical dimension down from? i believe mine is 28.25" and i can fit games with the method mentioned above

This is precisely the same problem with the 2016 Santa Fe. Plenty of room to fit the pin in the interior, but that lip on the hatch is raised from the floor of the back by about 1-1.5 inches.....making it impossible to slide a pin in.
My 2005 Santa fe fit my Lotr and Potc but I had to disconnect and slide the head down for Sharkeys Shootout and Waterworld.
When I was shopping for my current vehicle, the reactions of the salesmen were amusing when i was much less concerned about whatever they were yacking about and much more concerned about rear opening clearance and the cargo are dimension with the seats folded down. "You want to do what with it??!"
I have no idea why either. This is the big Explorer with the 3 rows of seat. We are talking about a pin out of box folded. Slid it in coin door first but at the very end the folded backbox was squeezing the weather strip foam against the metal. While a pin like a new Stern goes in with tons of room on all sides and top. Something about the cabinets on those machines.
Oh, and the refrigerator was bought a few towns away and I had to drive down a major hi-way to get it home. I can't believe the State police didn't stop me. It looked like it was about to make my front wheels come off the ground.
