As an owner of 11 System 1 games - theyre not stinkers..

With the Pascal board these things will work about 95% of the time. The 5% that doesnt usually needs a connector to be re-pinned.

Ballys of the Era have Alltek

Williams System 3-7 - how gawd awful is that interconnect between the 2 boards? and Scanbe sockets?

My point is, every system has their shortcomings, are some worse than the others, sure!

    Quoted from Slim64:

I have a genie giving me fits currently, my only issue with system 1 stuff is the lack of good diagnosis write ups
From the little I've dabbled, the overall architecture of the cpu and driver board seems pretty straight forward. At least a lot less messy than Williams stuff.

    You've surely never read below

If you dont have a game manual along with a system 1 manual(you need both) then get one

    This is a great video..

This thread has now turned in to "Williams sucks!"

    Quoted from ForceFlow:

So, while most of this discussion has been focusing on the MPU (and driver board, to a limited degree), how about the design of the System 1 power supply?

I love taking off the transistor just to work on it

Attached shows this wonderful power supply.

Whats up with the hideous hand drawn traces?

    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

I'm dying to know why the above is better than the Williams system 3-7 power supply. Clay?

Its great cause you can insert of the plugs either way... We call it "System 1 Roulette" If you win your game works, if you plug it in upside down you get to rebuild your power supply, yayyy!!!

I actually started typing about the Stern hand drawn traces too.. they both look equally bad..

    Quoted from ForceFlow:

Not to mention, since there's no keyed pin, you can also shift it over by one too, even if it's oriented the correct way.

They "fixed" it i forget when, by adding a 9 pin molex with pins blocking 1/9 from being inserted..

You could still put it upside down though..

Heck you can even still do it on the Pascal Board

    Quoted from Arcane:

I read this excellent thread with a lot of interests as I am about to dive into the restoration of System 1 Buck Rogers which is not working at all. I would like to hear from people who have had positive results what they did on their System 1 in regard to the various boards (CPU, Driver, Sound).
    Did you guys go with
    1) Pascal Janin boards (combo or discrete?)
    2) Ni-Wumpf replacement
    3) Rework of the existing boards assuming the Spider chips are good.
Also, if using a replacement board, what makes more sense from a financial perspective to get in the USA? Ni-Wumpf or Janin made in France and shipped to the USA?

Just get the Pascal Janin board - Niwumpf is decent but the extra features on the Janin board blow it away.

Go for the All in one combo board and be done with your board woes
