I used to like it until I learned of Pete's kiddie porn habit.

That whole “supple wrists” part always made me want to throw a brick at the radio

No one has complained yet about "Even on my favorite table, he can beat my best" and "I thought I was the Bally table king"?

Actually, I can't believe the disparagement of the Who going on here. Sacrilege! I thought religion was a taboo topic on Pinside!

Oh he says Bally?!? I’ve literally never known all this years lol. To me it sounded like “Mighty Table King” like some sort of title. I didn’t care enough to look it up.

A few decades ago someone wrote an article in one of the British pinball mags about his having taken a trip "From Soho down to Brighton" for the sole purpose of documenting every pinball machine he could find in between those two towns. I believe he only found one or two games. Probably different results today.

That's all I got. Except to warn everyone DO NOT Google the song 'Gumball Wizard'. I warned you.

    #56 4 years ago

You all are too thin skinned. The song was a good song when it hit the airwaves in 196?. It was not a great song. Sunshine of Your Love was a great song.

The radios were generally shitty back then and the most I ever got out of it was the chorus. But we all would sing along when it came on because it was good to listen to when there was lots and lots of crap music being played on the radio.

Don’t like being called Pinball Wizard? Screw down your ball cap on a little tighter, get your sun glasses on, and say nothing to no one about playing pinball. End of your problem.

    Quoted from littlecammi:

Some deaf, dumb and blind kid plays pinball way better than I can?
    That pisses me off.

You need to modify that lyric so that it matches you. I go with ‘That fat, grey and short kid, sure plays a mean pinball.’

Great tune. Cream is/was awesome. Really liked 'I Feel Free'.

    Quoted from swampfire:

I prefer to be called a “pinball gigilo”

Thats because you put the word "player" in pinball player!

    #60 4 years ago

It’s a cliche word association (if I say the word pinball, you say wizard, or The Who) but I would not consider it a negative association.

There certainly are other words/topics that if mentioned elicit an entirely different type of cliched response.

I would like to get a MP3 doorbell and put the first 20-30 seconds of the OVERTURE in it.

The germans do not need this song anymore since 1980, they have their own pinball-hymn.

AM FLIPPER BIST DU DER GRÖßTE (in english YOU'RE THE GREATEST PINBALL-PLAYER) from a young girl, Martina Wagner, released in early 1980. Not only did she love Pinball but also John Travolta.
If anyone is interested what she's singing, I will translate it for you.

    No
Here are 2 other records from her. She released 3 vinyl-records, one in each 1978, 1979 and 1980. The FLIPPER-song was the B-side from "Für Puppen zu alt"

But here are some other "real" german boys - GORGAR will eat you alive
Watch out for the word TILT at the end of the song.

It's hated maybe because it's played daily (sometimes 2 or 3x) on all the "Classic Rock" stations that have all of 19 songs on their playlist. It's been "FM'd" to death...

    #67 4 years ago

I wasn't aware of any hate or dislike for this song. It doesn't bother me at all.

    You learn something new everyday.

I'm new too but learning that nothing is off limits here when it comes time to bitch or hate on something. Always thought it was just a song. Not like it's I Would Walk 1000 Miles or something.

    #69 4 years ago
    Quoted from Dooskie:

So why do so many pinball enthusiasts hate the song Pinball Wizard? ...

Made the term "pinball wizard" popular. BLECH Ptttew! Ptttew!

As has been said, this has become an overused dumbass cliche that seemingly EVERY non-pinhead dufus and their brother thinks is cool to characterize someone who enjoys playing pinball.

    Quoted from punkin:

Are you referring to "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)"?!

    Now ... THAT'S a song!

    #70 4 years ago

For most of my younger years I hated pinball but I loved Pinball Wizard and the Tommy movie.

I recently saw The Who perform this song live with a very impressive video animation of pinball playing on a big screen.

A classic and still one of my favourite songs.

Along with some wet-behind-the-ears kid breathlessly trying to sound like some 80s DJ and make like Whole Lotta Love was recorded just yesterday.

    #72 4 years ago

My issue with this song is that when I share my love of pinball with someone new, without fail they say “I bet you love that song Pinball Wizard.” And I say “no”, and then it’s awkward.

Just lie about it and say it used to be one of your favorite songs but that you moved on

I consider it an honor when someone refers to me as a pinball wizard. I'm not that good.

    #75 4 years ago

I get the cliche comments, but our hobby has an anthem, and a damn good one by one the greatest rock bands ever, can't see how that's a bad thing!!

    #76 4 years ago

Of course, there is also "Pinball Cha Cha" from Yello.

    #77 4 years ago

Nobody hates the song, people will say they don't like it-but they really do.

It is a great song and when I play my Tommy I like to crank it up

    #78 4 years ago

Only song I can think of w "Pinball" in the title, and is about a person that plays it.

Until someone writes a new one, recorded by an international act we're stuck with it.

Song doesn't bother me so much as people calling me one. "Pinball enthusiast" doesn't have the same ring, however, so I get it.

    #79 4 years ago

Sell your pins, get yourself some videogames and crank up “Pac-man Fever” as your song.

It’s just one of those repetitive things people say, thinking they’re being clever. Hur Hur Hur, etc.

After 25 years in the hobby all you newbs will hate it too.

Weirdest thing happened. I blacked out for 20 minutes and when I came to I was mumbling something about playing a mean pinball...

    #85 4 years ago

So maybe someone should write and perform a new pinball anthem?

I don't mind the song or the Who. It is classic rock. Greta Van Fleetards would't get it, thank goodness. The wizard name is ok too. I think Tommy is a stupid boring movie. I owned a copy until I watched it. Not an Elton fan either.

    #90 4 years ago

It's a good song from a great album and band. But familiarity breeds contempt.

And it really is mind-boggling when civilians think they are being clever by using it. You really think we haven't heard that one before?!

    Quoted from pinmister:

I hate the song. If it comes on the radio, I'll tune to the first channel playing that KARS-4-KIDS commercial because at least it's a step up.

    #92 4 years ago

    A poll should be added.

    What offends you more?

    1 pinball wizard

    2 Bally "table" king

    3 Elton John

4 That I didn't take acid before seeing that movie

    Quoted from Anonymouse:

Exactly! he claimed he was “ doing research for the book he was writing and stated that he was abused as a child”.
Anyone else would be in jail.

He’s also a real tool and said in another interview that he got bored with the guitar after he mastered it and had moved onto other instruments.
I do enjoy their music but what a douchebag.
