Here's a totally random question for the old-timers here that I've been wondering for decades:

In a System 11 machine, why is the A/C relay called "A/C" relay? I understand the function, but the name is confusing since people think "A/C" as alternating current or somehow related to AC power.

So why A and C? Why not A and B? Did they have names? Alternate side and constant side? (Though the constant / default side is A and the temporary active side is C).

Any ideas or (crazy or real)?

    Just curious!
    Brian
