You turn the bolt downward, closest to the floor, and only spin it backwards, up to the leg, once it's level, then tighten.
Make sense?
But it's sooo much easier (at least I find it is) to loosen the locking nut (if one is installed) lift the entire machine on your back because it's not that heavy on all fours, and then spin the leveller with just your fingers.
