I will take your quote and change it up a bit, When I buy or have bought pins, I pay for what they are worth to me...
That could be higher or lower than any consensus or any guide . I deal with a lot of fully restored pins, so you have to have an internal gauge on what something is valued at. Same when I sell a pin.
