    Quoted from kevmad:

    Please explain??

    Quoted from MrBally:

OP, to be blunt, it is impolite to tell others how to spend their money on a "donations accepted, but not required" situation.

We don't know what situation the other Pinsiders are in...take LTG's story he was going through a rough time a few years back and he simply couldn't donate at that time. Others like him donate their time and expertise to Pinside and that's why it's such a great site.

    Quoted from underlord:

Robin, great idea! Since the owner of the site has to buy stuff too, it would make things easier.
    Marco.
    Cointaker
    BAA
    PBR
    Etc,etc.
Quality places would be recommended here.

Robin can speak to that, but in the past I know he has felt very strongly that it should remain free of that. We are really vendor neutral, and work very hard to stay that way. I can imagine what would happen if people started to see huge Stern ads, but smaller JJP ads or whatever...fingers would immediately point right at us and claiming that we are biased.

No ads=no chance of people thinking that and makes us unbiased and untethered!

I just donate to turn my heart red.

As a former pinball guru who has recently been demoted to pinside member I would like to ask that the donation that MT45 made earlier in this thread on Lloyd's behalf be credited to Lloyd's Pinside account, and his heart turned red. The guy doesn't use CC's or Paypal, but he's an integral part of this site. Turn it red, Robin!!!

Thanks for the reminder. Just made my yearly donation. Thanks for all you do Robin!

    Quoted from MrBally:

    Please, no ads.

    Agreed!
Robin could make a lot of money with ads, but chooses not to. Our donations will help keep the site ad free.

    Donated

    #57 4 years ago

I agree, please no ads. I prefer Robin periodically asking for donations, kind of like Wikipedia does.

    #58 4 years ago

    Just donated.

I think one reason more don't donate is it's too hard to find the link (out of sight, out of mind). I looked for it and it's a tiny link on "My Profile" page. There needs to be more prominent links on the site.
    - Add one on the navigation links next to "My Pinside".
    - Maybe a sticky in the main forum "How to Donate".
    - Add a link on top of marketplace next to "Merchandise."

Plus add "Donated to Pinside" next to heart icon.

I think these would not be obtrusive but make it easier to donate without being a nag.

I agree, a few bucks a month for such a great site is worth it (especially for a fellow Dutchman, thanks for keeping this site add free Robin!)..

Your heart is in a good place and I appreciate that. Not fair to do though. Many people make valuable contributions and posts to Pinside and to single me out isn't fair.

I want to contribute just like everybody else. Just need a way to send in a money order.

Just hand it to Robin at the next Expo!

How much does it cost to run the site? Nobodies business but Robins

Happy to donate $20 per year
Small change for the priceless advice that can be gained

    #65 4 years ago

I like the weekly donation option.

    #66 4 years ago
    Quoted from MT45:

Out of curiosity, why isn't this site monitized with pinball related ads? I discovered this site as a new pinhead and didn't know where to shop for bulbs and parts. Early on, I got all my stuff from eBay sellers. If a company like Cointaker had a banner ad, I would have for sure gone with them.

I like that this site isn't filled with such ads... but you have a good idea about creating a [sponsored?] vendor database and include customer reviews/recommendations. While many of us wouldn't really mind pinball-only ads, that would require Robin to build the capability to serve his own ads, invoice vendors, etc... and once he starts down that road he may realize the the easy route is to use a click-through ad service which will inevitably have no pinball ads, instead filled with viagra, new cars, and dating sites.... so in that I completely understand, and appreciate, the fact that Robin accepts donation rather than going the ad route.

In fact since Robin finally solved the mobile browsing issue, I am glad to donate again just for appreciation of that effort.

Not my primary pinball site, but I've used it on and off for many years, first as a lurker, then as a member.

Happy to donate - thanks for the heads up.

    #68 4 years ago

I'm new (I've only been around for a few months) and I've been meaning to donate, but I keep forgetting to do so. Pinside, and it's friendly members, have been very helpful with my first pinball machine purchase, and all of the mods and protective pieces I purchased for it. I've come to frequent Pinside almost daily to read the forum and market pages. I'm already dreaming of owning a second and third machine, so I'll be around for a while.
Anyway, thank you to Pinside.com and all of the friendly, helpful, people on here. I finally donated. Enjoy my monies!

I donate an absolute fraction of what this site has been able to save me over the years.. seems fair.

    #70 4 years ago

These I donated money so you should too threads just rub me the wrong way. I will donate when I'm good and ready. Plus I have donated many times to various people here on Pinside and I never felt the need to tell people about it. Except right here

I don't like the hearts either. Just another reason for people to rub it in your face. Remove the hearts and I will donate, lol.

Maybe, I'll post tomorrow and let you know if I still feel the same way

    Quoted from rosh:

I make money selling stuff on Pinside. I would feel like a dirt bag if i did not donate.

I can't remember if I donated before I ever sold something here or not (I think I did), but if you sell even a single game or mod or anything here then at least kick in a couple bucks. And if you're a regular seller then by all means, do more!

    #74 4 years ago

I'm set up for auto-pay every month. It may not be much, but if more people do this and produce a predictable revenue stream, it'll help ensure that Robin can manage both Pinside and personal bills (and keep his focus here, instead of a traditional job). Whether my funds go to datacenter capacity or to Robin's beer fund, either way - it helps keep him focused on improving this site.

    #75 4 years ago

    I pay $10 a month for XM. I pay $5 for Pandora One. I pay $10 for WWE Network. I pay $10 for Hulu+.

And I think I use PINSIDE more than all 4 combined, and 3 of the 4 of those still make me watch ads.

    Its a no brainer.

If you use pinside: donate to it. Really nothing to debate.

Robin is too humble to make a thread like this, but I am glad someone did. Even PBS has to do a pledge drive once a year.

    #76 4 years ago

Im on here too much not to donate.

    #77 4 years ago

I have a general "entertainment value" rule.

Generally, I like to make sure entertainment only costs me a max of $5 an hour. For example, if I buy a $60 computer game that keeps me entertained for more than 12 hours, I consider that a decent value. Anything beyond that is even better.

Pinside's value blows those out of the water. I'm happy to donate.

I'm not wealthy, but I donate my time with tech help and $10 a year.

As far as the mobile update, I feel the pain Robin went through. I just had to mobilize a ton of sites to comply with Mobilegeddon. Freakin' Google owns the internet... I hope I never see that analyzer again.

    Quoted from Plungemaster:

Jeeehhhh... Another give us some money topic.
What about all the children dieing of cancer? Nepal? The tens of thousands of refugees in europe?
There is where my money is going!

No question there are much more important things than pinball, but for most people there's got to be a balance between saving the world and enjoying their lives.

If your premise is that donating to pinside is an irresponsible misuse of money because there are more important causes, then why are you here? You should be fundraising or writing editorials! Why pay a quarter to play a game when that quarter could go to a needy charity? You certainly must not *own* any machines because that would be $1000s that should have gone to the needy!

Just because there are more important things in life than Pinside doesn't mean you're irresponsible or uncaring to give a little $$$ to help pay for what you get out of Pinside. If you don't want to give to Pinside, fine, but this holier-than-thou bullshit is...bullshit. Just because people donate to Pinside doesn't mean they don't donate to more important causes as well. (In fact if I had to guess, I'd bet people who freely donate to Pinside are more likely to donate to important causes.)

So please cut the holier-than-thou pose.

Adblock plugin would take care of those though

Hmmm.... I do appreciate a gentle reminder thread "to donate" , and will do so shortly. I agree that to "tell" people
to donate is not appropriate. Everyone has their own financial situation and can/will donate as they see fit (I would hope).
I never noticed the Heart logo....and think that should be one's option to be used/posted or not. I certainly can see a person thinking that the heart is tacky ...and sort of a guilt associated reminder to those that haven't donated.
