I've heard and seen how Bally drop targets will sometimes fail to drop when they're hit with full force. Given what I've experienced working with the drop targets on my Gottlieb game, I find it hard to believe you could ever hit a working drop target and it wouldn't go down, so I'm curious what the mechanical/electrical explanation is for why Bally drop targets are as infamously stubborn as they are.

If you hit them hard and they dont drop, you need new drop springs. True for all games.

I'm sticking with the "original" equipment... there's a lot of love in those original parts.

Newer versions are pretty pricy .... and can't cook

If I remember right this was studied a lot on RGP. Someone filmed it with a high speed camera and found out why they don't always go down and made some recommendations. I don't remember what the conclusions were but if you search RGP hopefully you can find it.

Wow, I assumed you had to do other things before it let's you knock them down, like Centaur Orbs. I'll look and see what's under there one of these days....

They bounce back and re-latch without enough spring tension. But if you hit them gently they won't bounce back and the spring can pull them down.

If you have "hooded" targets where "tombstones" should be, the back of the hood can hang on the rubber ring behind it, keeping it up.

    Sometimes those targets just brick.

I've got a harlem GT that does it on the first drop down sometimes. Looked at it when it was jammed and found that it was not staying in the guide and the bar was catching on mounting plate. Filed the burr off the actuator arm and it help. Still occasionally does it so next move is to mount some nylon guides to keep the actuator arm straight.

Might also consider tightening the rivets in the arms? Last resort, replace.

Before buying new parts, first make sure the rubber behind the drops is very very tight. That fixes the issue for me most of the time.
