I find it puzzling that so many people have a visceral negative reaction to the phrase "Man Cave."

I created a poll with the possible reasons I could come up with. Please vote so I can stop scratching my head about this, I'm already thin enough up there!

(By the way, I refer to my own subterranean retreat as the "Dan Cave"! Now, that's funny.)

    #2 7 years ago

I hate it mainly like I hate the term Geek/Dork/Nerd. Now it is trendy to take that title and not be anything of what it really means.

    #3 7 years ago

I don't hate it...it's just a little stale at this point.

    #4 7 years ago

Shudder a bit anytime someone calls my office/gameroom a cave. So it gets dark, it's not damp and musty

    #5 7 years ago
    Quoted from shimoda:

Neither are a lot of caves, and I am offended by you characterizing them that way!

I'll tell you what I hate about "Man Cave" more than anything: Real estate agents!

My brother and I casually invest in real estate, and EVERY agent that shows a house with a "finished" basement immediately tell us what a great Man Cave it would make. Puke.

I don't like it, overused, corny. Kinda like 'master suite' and 'en suite'

    Its just kinda lame

    #10 7 years ago

I like Man Cave, it describes a cavernous hole, that's only allows entry by men...

Anyone have a problem with that?

    #11 7 years ago

Man cave sounds like a place where the sun doesn't shine.

    #12 7 years ago

There's no option for how I feel about it represented on this poll.

    #13 7 years ago

Just wore out. Kind of like 'bucket list', or 'bling'.

I'll have the roast duck with the mango salsa please.

Man cave was a lame term to begin with. Let it move on to hibernation where it belongs.

    #16 7 years ago

You sure used 'hate' a lot.

    #17 7 years ago

Like it or not, it's a name that will forever be used by 99%+ of the population to describe that sacred place where a man goes to escape.

It's like being called a "Pinball Wizard" all the time. Good luck getting everyone to stop calling you one.

    #18 7 years ago

Mines called "Hars Bar". That doesnt bother me as a buddy nickname it.

Because "Girl Grotto" sounds so much better.

I wish my "man cave" made the bally playboy grotto sound every time I walked in it.

Man Cave is lame, but Pinball Wizard is worse.

Man caves have a bit of everything, bar, sports memorabilia, home theatre

    Pinsiders have games rooms
    We like pinball!

    Dan
As a master of the English language I am surprised this flies with you. It certainly isn't a cave and I have seen your daughter and one other female enter yours on the limited occasions I have been there.

It's just one of those sayings that makes me cringe for no good reason. Probably because the kind of man who would dwell in a man cave is not what I want to be.

Like Grandpa Simpson said, "here's a list of words I never want to hear on TV again: bra, horny, family jewels." He should have added man cave.

    #24 7 years ago

Man cave probably sounds pretty good to the guy that made up the term.

You have to wonder if someone like that doesn't swing both ways though.

    #25 7 years ago

I will say that it's overused but I don't dislike it. To me, it just describes a cool place to be and hangout. I'd like to think my basement is such a place.

My kids bought me a "man cave" sign to hang on the wall going into my basement quite a few years ago. It's still hanging there and I never even think about it.

    I'm good with mancave.

    Quoted from o-din:

    Don't confuse a Man's Cave with the Bear's den.

    Or do...and live a little.

    #27 7 years ago

Man cave, game room, Pincade, barcade, pinball wizard, geek, nerd, dork, dumb ass, What ever. I'm not politically correct. I have a man cave, my wife has her diva den.
But most of the time I just call it my outrageously expensive compulsive addiction middle aged crises mentally dysfunctional toy room.

What I really hate are these damn smiley faces everyone uses.
Just give me a blow your head off smiley face and I'd be happy.

    #28 7 years ago

I just call it "The garage".

    #29 7 years ago

I call my basement "paradise". Pinball, darts, ping pong, stereo, TV, bar. What more in life do you need?

    A basement?

I think you guys call them "Mines."

    #32 7 years ago

Around here we use basements to escape tornadoes.

    #33 7 years ago

I've never met anyone who had a dislike for the term Man Cave.

    #34 7 years ago
    Quoted from Gatecrasher:

    the term Man Cave

should remind all you guys over 40 to get that rectal exam...seriously.

    #35 7 years ago

I have always hated the word. It just sounds so....ugh. It makes it sound like we were sequestered to one and only one area of the house - like we can't be ourselves anywhere else. That or maybe I should start carving hieroglyphics on my wall and go "UGGG UGG...ZUG, mug doag fire, EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERF!"

Should we start calling the kitchen the "woman's place" ? I doubt it would go over very well.

    #36 7 years ago

We call it Dadland in my house. Its the one room my daughters toys are not allowed...she can bring them in but they must leave with her.

    #37 7 years ago

None of the poll descriptions nail it for me...

Its a lame term invented by a crappy cable channel to describe a spot that a sissy-man hangs out and drinks 1 craft brew beer before getting yelled at to do the dishes by his domineering porker of a wife.

    #38 7 years ago

I don't hate the term man cave, just prefer calling it a gameroom or entertainment room.

    #39 7 years ago
    Quoted from NPO:

Should we start calling the kitchen the "woman's place"

Start? that's been a thing for a loooong time.. although I think it's finally accepted generally as very offensive in most places. But anyway that's not a valid comparison.. calling the kitchen the woman's place is offensive, a man cave is just a place to hang out and relax.. totally different sans for the women that DO like to hang in the kitchen and find cooking relaxing.

I didn't realize that many people had a problem with man cave.. I love having a man cave. It's not that you are relegated to one place to be yourself, it's just the room in the house that is full of all the fun stuff.

Said it better than I could have. The term annoys me in the same way Home Improvement (or any family sitcom) did. The dad is an idiot animal and the sassy wife is there to set him straight.

I don't like it just because it seems childish, totally cliche, lacks any kind of imagination. "No women allowed!" Reminds me of a treehouse for a kid. Girls, Keep out! lol, that idea is for 10 year olds and 30 year old virgins.

    "Man cave" just seems dated.

It's the "Where's the Beef" and "Dy-No-Mite" of it's time.

    #44 7 years ago

I digress to the 70's.....call mine the "den" ....there's dated for you....

    #45 7 years ago

Don't care, but wouldn't describe it that way. I just say game room.

    #46 7 years ago

The place where chicks don't like to stay more than 5 minutes cause they find it borring and don't understand.

We just call it game room too.

    #47 7 years ago
    Quoted from Nevus:

Don't care, but wouldn't describe it that way. I just say game room.

Technically it's my " escape place" , but don't really care what anybody calls it.....I just end up there most nights.....

    #48 7 years ago

Like it or not it's here to stay. Some people hate everything...........me, almost everything................

    #49 7 years ago

The term 'man cave' is equivalent to someone calling you a 'pinball wizard' when they find out you own pinball machines. It's cliche and overused.

My wife had bought me a 'man cave' sign for my game room (which is filled with all sorts of signs) for Xmas a few years ago. Took me about 9 mos to mustard up the chonies to tell her I hated that term (and sign). I didn't mind so much though cause she means well and cares a lot of my little boy toy entertainment.

Could you imagine how overused the barfing one would be...or what if instead of thumbs down it was a barf squirt with all subsequent barf shots filling up the barf worthy post window until you couldn't even read it anymore.
