Have to say this song always sends a chill when the highs are hit.
One of the best songs to show off his range.

Quoted from Atari_Daze:Ozzy - duh
Quoted from usandthem:Off list- Ozzy
Back before samplers and electronic gadgets were good enough to use live, Ozzy would have other singers backstage who would sing his songs for him.
You can't be nominated for "best metal singer of all time" if you can't sing live.
It would be like nominating the Monkees for best live band.
Quoted from shovelhed:Hands down Ronnie James Dio.
Cortland, N.Y.
His first band "Elf" had more talent than his other bands..
Udo Dirkschneider has a voice that, while not possessing much range, is perfect for metal. I always thought Jeff Scott Soto who sang in Yngwie Malmsteem’s band had a great voice.
Quoted from vid1900:Honorable mention #1:
Glen Danzig - Powerful singer mixing Metal, Blues and even a little Elvis & Jim Morrison.
Danzig - Long Way Back From Hell

Just think Vid, Danzig started in punk. Is there anyone else in the history of punk with a voice even close to as good as his?
We also forgot James Labrie from Dream Theater. I've seen them a few times, the most impressive musicianship I've ever witnessed and Labrie never hit a bad note. Great live singer, great live band.
Quoted from vid1900:Don't you love hearing Motorhead songs are are not Ace of Spades?
Motörhead - Get Back In Line

Yes....everyone knows Ace of Spades....so many good songs.....in an episode of The Walking Dead they used Fast and Loose when Merle went to kill the Governor. One of the best episodes.
Quoted from BudManPinFan:Udo Dirkschneider has a voice that, while not possessing much range, is perfect for metal. I always thought Jeff Scott Soto who sang in Yngwie Malmsteem’s band had a great voice.
Going to see UDO in Nj right after the Allentown pinball show . Doors open at 7
The answer is Axl Rose...if he qualifies as metal...I’ve always just thought of GnR as a rock band, but if Axl is in the running then it’s him.

That was back when he was to wasted to sing. I have seen him live a couple times and as recently as a few years ago and sober Ozzy destroyed it. Sounded fantastic sober and put on a heck of a show.
Ozzy lemmy or axl get my votes
amazing to see the dio love. i saw him twice with Sabbath and on the holy diver tour. It was in a smaller venue and i had great seats. He played all his material but we kept calling him back. Finally he did an unreleased song and said im all out now.
RJD
Only seen him live once at the aragon ballroom
Black Sabbath Dehumaniser tour
Tony and Ronnie watched me and my cousin sneak up to the front row every time the security guard turned around.
Tony smiled at us and tried several times to throw a pic our way but I never was fortunate enough to be the first to the ground
Great times
Such a powerful voice!
The person i would vote for isn't on your list. I would vote Glenn Danzig \m/,
Edit: Danzig 1 to 4 only!
Quoted from Puffdanny:Seems most of you have hard rock and heavy metal confused
You have to remember in our day it was heavy metal.
Judas Priest playing tonight in Detroit unfortunately I have a annual family event to attend will seek Gryszzz for counseling
Quoted from Gryszzz:Priest>family stuff. That'll be $300.
Unauthorized expenditures over $5 must be pre-approved by wife
Quoted from Puffdanny:Seems most of you have hard rock and heavy metal confused
Isn't thrash metal getting sprinkled in also
At least thrash metal is metal.although Scorpions was my jam when I was 14 I wouldn't call it metal nor would I consider Rainbow,Alice Cooper or anything from Priest before Painkiller metal.with that list there's only 1 logicall choice and that's Tom Araya although you'd still be wrong because it was Dave Brockie from Gwar.
Like most polls on Pinside, these are not the best 9 metal singers of all time. They are the 9 in this poll. You really need to have multiple rounds and shave away the excess from the cream as you go to get more agreement about a "final 9". Much like what was done in this poll on bnrmetal.com a few years back...

While I don't agree with the outcome there, it was fun to watch it proceed.

Having said that...
Here are my requirements for a "Great Singer" that come to mind:
1. Soulful voice
2. Nails the notes
3. Strong agility to move quickly between notes
4. Natural ability to use upper register voice (not in falsetto)
5. Wide range (3+ octaves)
6. Doesn't need a crutch like a high pitched scream or a growl to be enjoyable
7. I love the tone of the voice (very subjective)
If you consider hard rock (70-78) as early metal, then my 1/2/3 is: Robert Plant, Ann Wilson, Ronnie James Dio
Listen to Rainbow Eyes from RJD (1978) -- you aren't going to get treatments like that from metal singers in the 80s... And I find it the most challenging thing to do as a singer. So on this particular list, I voted for RJD, Rob Halford would be second (First 4 albums only).

Quoted from mof:Like most polls on Pinside, these are not the best 9 metal singers of all time.
It looks like most of the final singers from that poll ended up in the Pinside poll.
It's odd that Dickinson beat Halford in your poll....Could be Russian meddling in our metal.
Metal-Rob Halford and Geoff Tate
Thrash-Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield, Tom Araya, Chuck Billy, and Joey Belladonna
Quoted from mof:Listen to Rainbow Eyes from RJD (1978)
Yeah I guess to each his own. That song had violins and flutes. I swear I heard birdies nestling in the trees.
If that's Heavy Metal than the committee that gave Jethro Tull that best Metal award where on the right track.
I saw Dio a couple times he's fine but awesome not so much to my ear.
As far as one-offs ago, how about McCartney's vocal in Helter Skelter? Leave it to The Beatles to also have done one of the first metal songs along with everything else.
Quoted from Pickle:From your list Rob Halford or Dio.
Best Metal singer to me is Geoff Tate of Queensryche. Saw them on their Empire tour 91 or 92. They played a 30-40 min Empire set. Took about a 20 min break and then played Operation Mindcrime in its entirety. Incredible show.
still to this day, best show i ever saw.

Nice wristwatch. Is it a retro commercial for Digiwatches?

He died a long time ago, probably was state of the art at the time.....
(edit: I just looked it up, he took those nude pics in 1995)
