Yay! Finally I had some time to do some serious work on the Pinside. The past 3 weeks I have been hacking away over steaming coffee updating the site in all kinds of ways. The main reasons were to enhance the readability. But I also wanted to get rid of flash as well as update to newer versions of the javascript library we're using (mootools). I have stripped all flash from the site, made sure it works well on iPad and more.

So what's new?

- Better readability of all header text. Switched to an easier-to-read font.
- Speaking of fonts, what do you think about the cool Dot Matrix font for the title in the color bar? Nifty huh?
- A complete new section was added to the site: Map. Here you can find the existing Pinsiders map but also a new "where to play" index. Here Pinsiders can add (or edit) pinball locations worldwide.
- The machine archive splash page was seriously updated. Redesigned with lots of tweaks to machine details etc.
- A better player for YouTube (now also flash-free for the iPad). Pinball music mp3 tracks that I got from DrBond will soon follow in this same media box.
- Added a "wiki-like" introduction function. All machines now have a space on their splash page for an unbiased "introduction text". Text is, like all machine details, editable by any Pinsider.
- Re-designed machine rating comments page.
- New section in the Top 100 listing new rating comments on the site. A pretty cool page to visit occasionally and read the latest comments made on machines.
- New section in the Top 100 for all the fun lists I created some weeks ago.
- New formula used for Bang for your Buck list. The formula is now described too.
- My-Pinside -> my ratings page added
- Re-design of the forum! Now includes overview of people's collection, ratings, and where they are from. Shows a heart icon for donators. New colors, new fonts, better integration in site.
- Much better popup-windows for the Avatar editor, story editor etc. as well as for all the image popups.
- Re-designed gallery page for machine photos. Images are now grouped.

Maybe I forgot something. You'll find out soon enough!

I really hope you like the changes, after all I made them for you
Interested to hear your feedback!

Very nice! Im gonna explore around a bit on the site but it really jumped out at me this morning. Obviously I had to read this post. Kudos for all your hard work!!

#3 13 years ago

Nicely done over all. Around the avatar the text is hard to read because of color contrask. Darker font or background around the avatar would be my suggestion,
thanks Robin!

#4 13 years ago

Robin - thanks for your hard work. This site just keeps getting better!

#5 13 years ago

Thanks for the comments! I have made the text a bit darker around the avatar.

#6 13 years ago

Wow... When I first loaded the Pinside page I thought it failed to properly load. Its different, looks cool! It will take a little time to check out all the new changes, but so far so good! Thanks for your efforts Robin!

#7 13 years ago

It looks great!

#8 13 years ago

Great work. I hate Flash, so I'm happy there is none of it left. And I love being able to see location information.

#9 13 years ago

Yeah I especially like the way the new media (YouTube) section turned out (e.g. http://pinside.com/pinball/archive/twilight-zone#media ). It still uses flash on browsers that support it (that's beyond my control), but now also works on the iPad.

#10 13 years ago

Yes Very nice

#11 13 years ago

Thank you for all the hard work Robin. I love the dot matrix font and the new overall look.

I forgot to mention these new inhabitants of the Pinside forum:

GoneFishinLvMsg is NOT going to be very happy about this news...

#14 13 years ago

Oh I see, me thinks I will use these a LOT.

Looks good, it was a bit of a surprise though, my eyes feel funny now...

#15 13 years ago

Thanks for the hard work Robin much appreciated!!

#16 13 years ago

This web site just keeps getting better!

#17 13 years ago

You're the best Robin! Site gets better all the time.

#18 13 years ago

Thanks for the hard work, but the "Splash" for all games indicates that they were made in January of 1970.

#19 13 years ago

Definitely more eye appealing (and better readability).

#20 13 years ago

very nice robin. so much work that all will appreciate, good job. with so much and so many hours being done on the site, it's hard to ask for something else. but i have to say it would be really great if when we quoted text from a previous post, that the authours name would pop up as well... just a thought. but that would seem bottom of the barrel now after seeing all the work that was done. kudos!

#21 13 years ago

Uhm.. Well..

Fixed it now.

Great idea! Will add this soon!

#23 13 years ago

Nice mods .. you might want to correct this:

Signed out

You have succesfully signed out.
The coin door's locked, it's save to go!

Should be "The coin door's locked, it's safe to go!"

#24 13 years ago

I Like... Great work, good changes

#25 13 years ago

Thanks for the comments! I have made the text a bit darker around the Avatar.

#26 13 years ago

#27 13 years ago

Another note. maybe it was just my login, maybe not. I received a PM from another member but it didn't show up in my inbox. I was able to read it via the email notification I had a message. Also, the little bouncy mail icon didn't show up either.

#28 13 years ago

I like the new look, Robin! Thanks for all the work! Seems like you could make money designing websites!

#29 13 years ago

Very Nice,Definitely keeps getting better,This site is IT!!! Thanks,Robin

Well as you can see in this post, I just added this functionality. The old way also still works, just remove the cite="nnn" part of the blockquote.

Let's keep an eye on this. I got some PM's today and no problems. Maybe it was a temporary glitch?

#31 12 years ago

Clean and professional looking website. That's why I prefer it over IPDB.

#32 12 years ago

The "Quote selected text" button wont work for me.

Robin Wrote: "Let's keep an eye on this. I got some PM's today and no problems. Maybe it was a temporary glitch?"

This has happened to me, but at the time I thought I accidently deleted the PM. It hasn't happened anymore, it was approx 2 weeks ago.

#33 12 years ago

The pinmail notification seems to be gone. You now have to go into it to see if you have a new message by actually going into the pinmail section. It would be nice to have this back on all the places. Thanks. I know you are busy watching all the Royal wedding stuff over on that side of the big pond

Maybe I was wrong or you just fixed that .. thanks Robin as I just now got that back at the top of my login.

#34 12 years ago

Very nice changes you have made, thank you for all your hard work and dedication.

This is all a bit weird, if anyone can put a finger on what's happening, that would be great. Because nothing changed about the notifications icon, except that I placed it on the right... To be investigated!

#36 12 years ago

Robin,

I'm having a real problem with the forum part of the site. Once I open it up, the scroll bar dissappears, and I can't navigate down past the stickies. I only see the first forum topic, and if I open the topic I'll only see the first post. Very strange, and it seems like no one else is having this issue.

#37 12 years ago

Pete, sorry to hear that. Which browser are you on? And which version of the browser (this can often be found in "About"). And could you try and hold shift while clicking the refresh icon of your browsers navigation bar?

#38 12 years ago

Thanks Robin! I refreshed with the "Compatibility View" button on my browser, and all is right with the world now!

Cheers
Pete

Robin Wrote: Because nothing changed about the notifications icon, except that I placed it on the right...

Maybe you placed the notifications icon out of page parameters, try moving it back...

The 'Quote selected text' button still wont work for me, it worked fine before you added the members name to it.Has anyone else experienced this?

#40 12 years ago

<blockquote="jrrdw">TESTING, TESTING

Trying to add the name manually but I don't know the code your using and the back tag
(< / blockquote> disappears when submitted.

This forum uses a different language/characters. Spudfiles quotes like
TESTING, TESTING
would come out like "jrrdw Wrote: TESTING, TESTING". Same way with Airbrush Technique Magazine, Theopia and Techsupport Forum.

Robin, what do the tags look like when the name is added here on Pinside?

#41 12 years ago

It looks like (blockquote cite="post-id")The quoted text(/blockquote). Where the round parenthesis are the pointy ones. Mind you, you're not quoting a person, you are quoting a post. I will soon add a post-id somewhere in the post meta bar so you know it. You could save a lot of trouble by using another browser than IE. I recommend Chrome or Firefox. But I will try my best to fix it soon for IE users.

#42 12 years ago

I was having the same scroll problems at work using IE. Will have to do the test on Monday to see if it fixes it.

#43 12 years ago
Quoted from robin:

Yup works fine with Firefox.

#44 12 years ago

I just did some digging and found a strange height descriptor in the site's stylesheet. This may be the cause of the problem. I removed it, could you please check if the scroll problem is gone now? I will do some more testing on IE later. I'm really sorry that these problems occurred, I though I tested the new design rather well but it turns out there are still some glitches.

As for the quote issue, it's quite difficult to get this working in all browsers. Getting it to work proeprly in IE is gonna require some more time. In the meantime, you can simply use the code <blockquote>The text you are quoting...</blockquote> and it will work like it always did. The only thing the new quote button does is add the value cite="[post-id]" to the blockquote tag.

#45 12 years ago

Robin, everything is looking GREAT! I was wondering though if it is too much trouble to make the top bar (Logged in as _______ (sign out), search, contact, help, and donate) can be a little darker. I have logged in at a couple of different computers and the text seems to be a little too close to the background color, hard to see, thanx. Other than that I am loving it!

#46 12 years ago

Thanks for the feedback. You're right, I made the bar a tad darker and the text a bit lighter, it's much more readible now.

#47 12 years ago

Perfect, thanx robin!

great job pinside staffers!

#50 12 years ago

I'm about to cry, but I think I finally got that $#%$@ quote button working. I have tested in IE 8, Firefox, Chrome and Safari. Could someone please test it in other versions of IE?

To test it is easy: select some text from somebody's post, click the quote button, and you should see the <blockquote cite="#12345">The text you selected</blockquote> appear. After submitting your post that will turn out something like this:

Quoted from cevans82:

great job pinside staffers!

Thanks for your help making the pinside better
