Quoted from Aphex:the people who rethemed a mustang into Ferris Bueller. not entirely a homebrew
That is a flipping tragedy. I saw it at Pintastic, wasn't impressed.

Quoted from Aphex:the people who rethemed a mustang into Ferris Bueller. not entirely a homebrew
That is a flipping tragedy. I saw it at Pintastic, wasn't impressed.
Quoted from TreyBo69:All new art, sculpts, and they redid the sounds and dots. It’s not entirely original, but I’d say they did enough to make it “homebrew”
Looking at the homebrew list I sort of see the issue, not a strong field this year.
Quoted from bluespin:Did you see Elf? I played it at TPF and it had great flow.
I dont think it was nominated.
Quoted from Cmartin1235:Ferris sure looks like mustang to me! IMO combining retheme and from-scratch homebrew is like judging between Andy Warhol and Monet. Sure, they’re both art. But they really have nothing in common. From my view, if it doesn’t involve cutting a playfield with new geometry is not an original pin. Don’t get me wrong, Ferris Bueller and Billy Madison are beautiful machines and they deserve accolades but judging them against the homebrews in this year’s collection is a weird. Regarding Elf, last week was its first showing. Bob can enter for next year and I hope it does. I played the heck out of it and it’s a great machine: geometry, rules, craftsmanship, assets, it’s the real deal. I hope it wins next year.
There is a fundamental difference between homebrew and re-theme. One is a pin from scratch, the other a make over of an existing layout.
FBDO is a fine re-theme and shows a lot of effort but not the same as a "homebrew"
Quoted from Wylte:I'm shocked that nobody in here has mentioned the second place winner, Cuphead! Great theme, combined EM gameplay with modern video, and was *actually a homebrew*.
That is pretty awesome!
Quoted from legtod2:Surprised that Cuphead did not do better in the judging and voting. In my humble opinion it matches much closer to what I would consider a "Homebrew" to be.
It has a built from scratch playfield, new cobrapin board, custom software, interesting graphics, and it's fun to play (Yes I have the virtual pinball version).
FBDO is a great theme and good looking machine but ...
I love how it has a very distinct Gottlieb flavor but makes great use of electronic effects. I noticed the spinner with dice animation, autoshooter? and color change in the lighting when a ball was locked, just a great effort all around. I'd be happy to play this at a show!
Quoted from chuckwurt:This is always going to be a category that will be almost impossible to get a fair shake.
Start with having a separate category for homebrew and re-theme.
You can quibble the details later but that is where I would start.
FBDO is clearly a re-theme, Cuphead clearly a homebrew. Both should win their respective classes.
I never heard of Cuphead till this thread got rolling, just an outstanding job by the builder(s) with excellent use of assets.
Quoted from chuckwurt:Even if you separate, the issue still remains. 99% of voters are going to just vote with the most familiar or cool looking title. I don’t think that’s fair at all.
Splitting up the category is still a step in the right direction.
Quoted from ReadyPO:I like this idea - it recognizes more people's hard work at the least. I have to admit though - the preservationist in me sometimes winces when pins are rethemed (not like seeing a pinball coffee table though...)
I don't disagree but I'd rather see a functioning well done re-theme than a title burned down to the wood.
Something new is being made, which depending on how it comes out isn't always bad. I never even heard of Cuphead (animated) so learned something new to boot and its very well done. I have my own eye on doing a homebrew pin and this just inspires me further.
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:Not to disparage anyone else, but Jakusu rethemes are world class. His Mad Max (retheme of Getaway) was superb in every way, and JAWS is looking every bit as good. Just wish I was a little closer than halfway around the world so I could see & play them in person.
Agreed; I have been turning that one over in my head for a day or two, his work is insanely good.
While world class for sure, they are both re-themes. The playfield dynamics are fundamentally unchanged.
Quoted from SLAMT1LT:You can't compete with a world-class pinball game designer, but you can kick the shit out of poor code, sound design and crappy art.
Tell that that to the guy who did TNA or Sonic Spinball.
There are no shortage of "world class designed games" that shoot like a bowl of oatmeal.
Guys working at Stern (one example) have to work against deadlines, budgets and other limitations home builders do not.
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:Also, there is so much more to a retheme than just changing the graphics. In the case of Jakusu his rethemes have complete custom sound packages to go with the new theme, have customized DMD animations to go with the new theme, have additional elements that were not included in the original (e.g. his shifter on Mad Max was not only moved to the left but was completely redesigned to match the one in Gibson's car, etc.) The work and creativity put into these while not completely original is by no means simple, and there are few people who are actually able to execute rethemes to the level that they could be successful production run machines.
I'm well aware of his work, which is why I mentioned him specifically.
His work is fantastic.
