Who watched the Magnum reboot and what did you think?

    #2 5 years ago

I used to watch the old magnum. What’s this new magnum? No way it could be as awesome

    #3 5 years ago

I didn't know there was a "new Magnum". I'm tired of all the re-boots. I'm out before even giving it a chance.

    #4 5 years ago

They rebooted it on CBS. It premiered last night. I am a die hard Magnum P.I. fan (original) Loved the show when it was on in the 80's so I thought I would check this one out. it's decent, but no where close to the original! You can never replace Tom Selleck! It does seem that Hollywood has run out of ideas.

    #5 5 years ago

Just had to watch the trailer to know it was going to bite. They destroy the original Ferrari in like the very first episode I heard/saw. Lame.

Was stoked til I saw Higgins was a girl now. Not cool. Enough of the equal opp crap, characters should be as written. I wouldn’t want Wonder Woman to be a dude so leave my Higgins alone please.

    #7 5 years ago

I loved Magnum PI in the 80's. I'm not a big TV guy, but I've actually looked forward to checking this reboot out.

I've seen a preview, but not the first episode yet. Gonna keep an open mind and give the show a chance.

    #8 5 years ago

Was a fan of the original show. Reboots do not usually get me interested. But I watched this first new Magnum PI, and it wasn't that bad, might even say it was good. Just couldn't rate it as great. Plenty of action, possibly some green screen stuff. Will watch the second episode, the writing and shots of Hawaii were there just like the original. This first episode was certainly better than any new Hawaii 5 0 episodes I have seen.

    #9 5 years ago

I tried watching the start out of curiosity as Magnum, P.I. was my favourite show as a kid...

    The remake is a travesty.

The only positive to come from it was wanting a cleanse of watching the original again!

    #10 5 years ago

I'll give it a watch, amazingly I've never really watched the original. Somehow I watched more Fall Guy, no idea why

    Heather Thomas? LOL

    #12 5 years ago

    Oh yeah... Those salon doors.

    And sleeper Markie post

    #13 5 years ago

I loved the original. No remake could ever replace it. No one will be able to fill Tom Selleck's shoes, or equal the coolness of the original Rick, TC and Higgins! Maybe this one will at least inspire nostalgic memories of the original and be worth tuning in.
Nonetheless, I will watch it for Zeus and Apollo - I'm a Dobie lover!!

The dogs were well represented in the 1st episode. You should be happy.

You are gonna watch it and be disappointed. You'll be bored out of your mind.

Everything is great when you are a kid and everything sucks when you are old.

This isn't the first 80's show/movie they have tried to reboot. They have rebooted Lethal Weapon, MacGyver and even Rush Hour based on the late 90's movie which got cancelled. I might check out the new Magnum PI and I recently started watching the original. I was a bit young when it was in it's prime but I loved the opening sequence and that Ferrari was one of my dream cars growing up as a kid.

    #19 5 years ago

NO, can't beat Tom Selleck, why try?
I did watch the Lost want a be, Manifest.
    Whats up with those eyebrows?

    #20 5 years ago

Random thought... Quantum Leap reboot, but bring back Scott Bakula and pick up where they left off! The reason I bring up Quantum Leap is that is another Bellisario show like Magnum P.I. and I believe all the original cast is still alive.

Same thing a lot of us said aboot Starbuck and she turned out great.
I love horrible comparisons personally, and a comic book character with 'woman' in the name and 70 years of history vs um, Higgins, is a classic.

Well, I watched the original 2 part pilot episode today (Don't Eat The Snow in Hawaii), and it turns out I wasn't bored in the least! I loved it! While I agree that sometimes things don't stand the test of time, in this case, I wasn't remotely disappointed. It's piqued my interest to watch the whole series again.

Tom Selleck brings something quintessential to the role... the new guy looks like a kid in his Dad's suit. There's no presence about him. You never get the idea that the new guy has the life experience or vulnerability that Selleck portrayed. Jonathan Higgins was a wealth of wisdom and experience, if a bit stodgy. Juliette Higgins is a young attractive blonde that just seems to do yoga at Robin's Nest.

(Spoilers) They have more supercars than they know what to do with (why not crash them all?), and they really jumped the shark in the penultimate scene when "Magnum" jumps out of the 308 that's sliding off a cliff, while shooting the bad guys in the chase vehicle, and grabs the skid of TC's helicopter, escaping the plunge to his demise.

Other than Selleck having to pull off the road to use a pay phone (which was a nostalgic moment) and other odd times, it didn't seem horribly dated to me. The original Magnum, P.I. is awesome, and it's no wonder it was so popular back then.

I told my wife after we watched the reboot that I wanted to watch the whole series over again! The title of last nights episode was "I did see the sun rise" which is a take off of " did you see the sun rise?" A 2 part episode which is one of my favorites.

The Jury is still out on this. It will be completely different show, new directors, production, and cast. It will air Oct 7th. There is a high percentage of women that watch this show, wonder if they will like the new cast?

OK.. back to Magnum PI channel.

    There is a new one?

    It's really not.

James Bond as a woman might be weird. 007 as a woman wouldn't be.

This stuff is only weird if you want it to be. Why couldn't Dr. Who be a woman? He's already been an old man...a middle aged man...a young man...seems like the Doctor can be whatever.

You guys have to get over this stuff. Life goes on man.

    #31 5 years ago

    Watched it........

    once.

    #32 5 years ago

"Oh... my... GOD!!!" John Hillerman was inimitable as Higgins, but I don't have any problem with Higgins being cast as woman... just give the character a reason for being there!

I don't see any problems with The Doctor being female either... Time Lords are aliens, so who knows what their regeneration will have them look like? As long as she plays the role well, it's got great possibility of breathing a fresh perspective of the The Doctor, and it's fine by me.

    #33 5 years ago

First off you can't replace Tom Selleck as Magnum ever. That would be like replacing Hugh as Wolverine or Harrison as Han or Indy just can't work period. Second, hopefully at least if Higgins is a woman now at least make her a pompous, rigid, old woman like Higgens was a man. lol And as for "The Fall Guy" coment, I say Hell Yes to Heather Thomas....

    #34 5 years ago

I didn't think a tiny guy could realistically reprise or recreate the role of Magnum.

    I was right.

    #35 5 years ago

Higgins is a man. Won't watch it. James West was anglo,so is the Gunslinger.Buford Pusser was a real guy, couldn't have been the recent portrayal. Dr. Who is male, so is James Bond. Sick of revisionist shows and movies, don't support them.

    #36 5 years ago

New guy doesn't even have a mustache I mean c'mon

    #37 5 years ago
    Quoted from phil-lee:

Dr Who isn't even human. It was already canon that Timelords can and will shift genders, and indeed can regenerate into species other than pseudo-human, in which case the gender bending would get even more weird(what happens for species with more than 3 genders, or no genders?).
I frankly don't care much either way. If the story is worth watching to me, I'll watch it, reboot or otherwise. If not, it will die. No skin off my teeth.

Now, when are we getting a Manimal remake?!

I have a friend in hell (Im mean Hollywood). He is working on "Facts of Life" re-boot....I loved Blair growing up!

I'm fine with gender equality, heck, I would never disrespect my own Mom, but leave my childhood memories be. Higgins? Starbuck? Dr Who(m)? WTF.
I am obviously not the demographic they want.

Dean Stockwell isn’t acting any more, but he might come back for this!

They tried to get a new series going in the early 2000s (I think on sci-fi network) starring Sam’s daughter, trying to find him, and with Al still in the holo-chamber. I thought that was an awesome idea, it gave the show a point, wasn’t a remake, and continued one of the main plotlines of the show (the daughter is from his leap in “Trilogy” where he has a daughter with Abigail, they make a huge deal about it in the show that it’s him who is the dad, not the leapee). They can now cast Bellisario’s daughter in the lead, why not? She’s an actress in something, I read.

I would TOTALLY watch that show. There are not enough “positive” shows on tv, I am a huge horror fan but i am tired in general of all the over the top drama / scandal/crime stuff that is all over the place.

I guess I don’t get this either. Who cares? DW in particular is -supposed- to be a new person each time. They even teased it when Master regenerated into Missy, who was a massive success as a character. Your (our) childhood memories are safe on DVD.

I just want the shows to be worthwhile. They need to cut back on the number of episodes - so many shows are 22 episode seasons, and 19 of them are filler! Make ‘em count!

    Seriously.

Like...of all the reasons to dislike the WW West remake...one of the WORST movies of all time...is cause they made him black?

Some folks don't even try to hide it around here.

    Quoted from poppapin:

    What's next transgender?

    Sure, why not.

I'd watch a Hunter reboot where the lead was transgender. Especially if the lead was still played by Fred Dryer!

    AKA a good TZ episode

Didn't care much for the original Magnum at all, but it seemed like women liked it. It was like they were trying to combine Mannix and Hawaii 5-0, but like most prime time in the 80s, it had no edge to it and came up short.

That being said, I flipped by it, saw him driving the car, and quickly found something better, newer, and more original to watch.
