---Update 2017-08-31----------------------------------------------

Added new pictures and video.
Price is 369,- EUR (shipping in europe around 17,-/worldwide around 40,-)

This is the only solution for Sega large DMDs on the market capable of full dynamic colorization, frame replacement

---Update 2017-07-07----------------------------------------------

Good news for all of you interested in this solution:

I decided to produce a larger batch this time so you all don't have to wait that long anymore.
Controllers are ordered and will shortly go into production.

---Update 2017-03-31----------------------------------------------

Important notice for customers from outside europe

You can order very convenient through pinside shops.
https://pinside.com/pinball/market/shops/1020-germangamingsuppliescom/00236-rgbpindmd-xl-sega-color-dmd

People from europe can still order trough my online shop:
https://germangamingsupplies.com/Home

---Update 2017-03-31----------------------------------------------

Displays are shipping from Europe for now!
I don't want to talk about the reasons...

There will be a small run shipping from the US, but it takes a little time to prepare and keep involved people save from competitor not wanting my display in the States.

---Update 2017-02-17----------------------------------------------

Im very happy to announce that devices will very soon be available directly from the US!
I found a reliable partner, with lots of experience with pinballs and modding.
So this seems to be the next logical step.

No more hassle with customs, taxes etc.

Details will follow the next days, avaibillity and prices also.

---Update 2017-01-09----------------------------------------------

First batch is sold out!

I would start a 2nd batch very soon, but I need feedback if there's enough demand for it.

This time there will be no preorder payment or similar.
It's only "first come - first serve" and I will start collecting interested people from now on.

Because some (Crash ) asked, there will be an option to buy only the controller.
But be warned: Savings aren't as much as you might expect and panels are hard to get and very flaky on quality site. this is why the first run took so long.

---Initial post----------------------------------------------

Hello folks,
As most of you probably know, original 192x64 DMDs are rare or almost non-existent.
Old ones are dying as time passes by and there is no replacement...

SO FAR!

We made a little test and we're now able to announce a replacement and enhancement for your big Sega displays...
Lucky1 made a special version of his PIN2DMD firmware for these big panels and gave me the exclusive opportunity to bring that project to life.

Following titles are supported:
-Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
-Maverick
-Batman Forever
-Baywatch

In addition to replacement, PIN2DMD-XL firmware is also capable of colorizing your game!

Options:
-Original orange color
-red, green, blue, white, grey, violet, purple, each in different shades (brightnesses)
-any combination of 4 different colors, e.g. white (100% Brightness), orange (66%), red (33%), black (0%)
-Scaling brightness to your own liking

*PIN2DMD-firmware has to be unlocked with a small donation (~10USD, more is always welcome, it's all for charity!)
I am not able to generate it for you, but i can install everything for you so you can start faster when it arrives at your place
1. order a kit from me
2. I'll provide you the device ID of your personal kit
3. you donate and receive a key matching your device ID
4. you send me the key and I will install it for you

To be honest, it's no rocket sience, you can do it by yourself... PIN2DMD-XL_1 (resized).jpgPIN2DMD-XL_1 (resized).jpgPIN2DMD-XL_1 (resized).jpgPIN2DMD-XL_1 (resized).jpg

Mounted in a Batman Forever Pinball...

The video doesn't judge the real quality, brightness and overall look.

And even if you only have 4 colors... Choose the right ones and you will be really satisfied.

Plus, you get the freedom to change the colors to your liking

Dom

First orders have been shipped
Australia is far away from Germany but I think they'll arrive soon!

Just little explanation on colors:
For basic replacement you don't even need a computer. When booting hold menu button on the back of the panel. You then enter a menu with different modes:
-device mode (virtual pinball/Sega)
-Color Mode (red/orange/green etc.)
-brightness
This will help you make some basic adjustments

Later, you can create a pin2dmd.pal file using pin2dmd-editor. In this file you can specify different colors for the 3 different shades + black

Example:
100% brightness = white
66% = light Blue
33% = turquoise
0% = dark blue

If you place that file on your microSD card then you'll immediately have the colors shown in my video above.

For Frankenstein I suggest:
White
Orange
Red
Dark red/black

Baywatch:
White
Yellow
Orange
Black

Sorry,
No suggestion for maverick...

If you have questions, ever feel free to ask, but please use the mail address above.

Greetings,
Dom

Ok, I think most of you have been served now... or at least some.

for all that didn't get the chance I have 2 News to tell:

-Bad news-
I don't have any dmds in stock because a lot came damaged due to bad packaging from the factory.
You can order now, but shipping will only happen in the next 3-4 weeks because receiving, testing and preparing the panels takes some time.

-good news-
I still have enough controllers for serving 10 more pieces.

So, if you like to have your set, drop me a line on [email protected]
or https://www.facebook.com/germangamingsupplies/

Dom

In case someone wants some short steps on how to install:

-Unmount your Backglass and Speaker panel
-remove all cables from the DMD and the Display Controller Board
-unscrew the Controller Board and remove it
-remove the old DMD and keep the spacers (should be some brass spacers in
different heights)
-start with the lower spacers, then put in the RGB.PIN.DMD-XL so that the
card reader faces upwards
-after the display, put on the higher spacers and the dmd controller
board. Put on the remaining spacers and nuts.
-rewire the controller with my provided flat cable, other cables won't work
properly
-wire the red cable of the DMD to V+ of the power supply and the black to V-
-from Power Supply, connect N and L to a power plug, to use it on the
service outlet, or connect them after the main power switch, before the
transformer
-connect the remaining connector (GND) to the GND-line of your pinball,
easiest would be grounding wire of the speakers, also attached to the
Speaker panel

When you power your system up again, it should display the pin2dmd-logo
for only a short time, or even not visible at all.
If it's longer visible then a few seconds and no output from your pinball
then please re-check wiring.

You are now able to play in demo mode for 3 minutes. After that period the system will shut down and only show you your serial number.
The key can be obtained from pin2dmd.com/installation

BTW: there are actually only a few controllers left, so hurry up

New displays are on the way but no. of controllers is limited.

Greetings,
Dom

#49 7 years ago

Partially correct:

No.1
For powering, you don't need a seperate power plug.
You can alternatively connect to Pin 2 and 3 (check your machine, they should carry both 250vac) of the main power connector CN1 in the backbox.
These should have up to 250VAC. The manual shows the exact wiring for Baywatch and Frankenstein
for Batman Forever and Maverick please check before... but they should be the same.

Don't forget to power of your machine before you do any modification on any power source/supply.
These voltages are dangerous and can seriously harm or even kill you!

No.2
The DMD receives data from the original Display controller board, which has to be mounted like before.
It comes with a special cable, so you can put your own DMD cable aside.
So you are correct on term 2

Greetings,
Dom

EDIT:
You COULD use the original 5V powering original Cherry DMDs but be aware that this may NOT work.
Remember, these machines are 20 years old and so the transistors may get a little weak.
Normally it should provide enough current, but for safety reasons I added a power supply to all displays

#51 7 years ago

added a small video descrition for the kit itself...

Some people were concerned if they get it to work in their machines and what it's like to assemble and configure.
as you can see, it's not that hard at all!
no hacking skills needed or even a PC for basic usage

#53 7 years ago

I'll post another video for that asap

#57 7 years ago

I'm really happy to hear that my customers are satisfied with the work we've done.

I added some palettes for you all to try out which fits best your needs and your machine:

Baywatch
www.germangamingsupplies.com/upload/palettes/baywatch.zip

Batman forever
www.germangamingsupplies.com/upload/palettes/batman.zip

Mary Shelleys Frankenstein
www.germangamingsupplies.com/upload/palettes/frankenstein.zip

Maverick
www.germangamingsupplies.com/upload/palettes/maverick.zip

Usage:
-Unzip to a folder of your liking
-copy only 1 of the files to your SD-Card
-Rename that file to pin2dmd.pal
-resart your Display by pressing MENU and OPTION button at the same time
-enjoy your new colors

If you want to try another palette, just remove the pin2dmd.pal or overwrite it and start from point 2 above.

Greetings,
Dom

General installation instructions are added in the opening post.

#60 7 years ago
Quoted from Crash:

I see a lot of screen tearing, especially during the flashing jackpot animations. Is any of that visible in person or is it just the camera?

Mostly it's the camera, like we stated several times in different threads, it's a fact that the refresh rates differ and this results in tearing.
Also, it's commonly known that the animations on these large SEGAS aren't the best and most fluid available on pinballs!
Even the best replacement, addon or other tool can't change that. Try to make a HD video with old VHS master source seems to be a good comparison to me...

Quoted from Whysnow:

are these available for order now? I remembering emailing when the list was getting started but never heard anything back or missed the email/pm.

PM sent

Dom

I'm actually facing some shortage on displays!
Controllers are available as we produce them here in town.

As you might guess, I love german quality. I'm not willing on sending out defective or minor quality stuff.

I hope you all understand this situation. It is really annoying that suppliers are not able to provide steadily the quality I request.
Sometimes you see panels that look good in the first place but then lack some pixel, have dead ones, or they fall off after some aging test...

Anyways, I'll keep you all informed on actual shipping dates, time frames etc.

Best regards,
Dom

New panels are being shipped!!!

I add some more palettes within the next days.

3 weeks later
#80 7 years ago

your parcels are all on their ways.

I had to deal with a new supplier for displays because the old one could not deliver steady quality.
Therefore some orders have been delayed.
Unfortunately some of my personal mails must have been gone to your spam folders as i told my customers about the delay.

There should be no more backorders and new sets are ready to ship from january 4th.

Kind regards,
Dominik

In case you are wondering about my absence here: My customers have been informed about that too.

#86 7 years ago

The system doesn't know if it's skin or water or else. It only knows if it's lighter or darker pixels coming from the original driver board

What Pin2dmd in its basic function does is to "translate" the brightness levels coming from the driver boards to user defined values/colors/shades.

This is for now the limitation, at least for the big panels.
On smaller panels there is already several options available to colorize things and even enhance to 16 different colors. Even on WPC or similar older machines.

2 weeks later
#96 7 years ago

First batch is sold out!!!

Like i mentioned in the initial post, there will be a 2nd run depending on interest.
Please post here or send me email to put you on the waiting list.

This time there will be no preorder-payment or similar.
I will collect names , adresses etc. of people who are interested, and when they're available i send out invoices.
You will then have 3 days to fullfill payment and then they will ship within 2-3 working days.

available options:

1. Full set, containing complete hardware, easy installable, Firmware preinstalled (locked, please read post 1 carefully!)

2. Controller only, no other hardware, firmware also preinstalled (locked, please read post 1 carefully!)
I don't recommend this option but like to give you the opportunity to choose by yourself!

Greetings,
Dom

#99 7 years ago

Color replacement is only 4 colors for now.
The controller will be capable of doing more but that has to be coded as well.

Even if you're "stuck" with 4 colors, it's a mayor improvement and actually I don't see any alternative. Even original ones.

Greetings,
Dom

#118 7 years ago

Ben1981 very nice video, sadly there's always refresh flickering when taking videos but we all knoiw how it looks like in reality

lucky1 Thank you again for this awesome firmware which gives us all these opportunities.
Your endless effort of helping people, doing research and adding features is awesome!!!

Also, I'd like to mention that every single penny sent to him is still forwarded to charity.

BIG UPDATE!

Im very happy to announce that devices will very soon be available directly from the US!
I found a reliable partner, with lots of experience with pinballs and modding.
So this seems to be the next logical step.

No more hassle with customs, taxes etc.

Details will follow the next days, avaibillity and prices also.

Additionally, there are some small and one big improvement...

And last: I will continue using only PIN2DMD firmware since this is to date the only known working firmware for large RGB DMDs!

Dominik

What i can see from that picture is that the pin 1 (red strand) of the custom cable is not set to point 1 on the display driver board. please turn it around.

On the DMD itself, please make sure the red strand is facing towards the MicroSD-Cardreader

Greetings,
Dom

#137 6 years ago

Crash the cable on the display driver still looks like it is in the wrong direction. A close up without flash could help much more

ZEN main difference is that the "Tyche" is a "all-in-one" controllerboard, where the V3 is a combination of discoveryboard and breakoutboard.
On functionality side they work the same, Tyche just looks a bit more "professional" for those wo care

Atm I don't know is someone will be at TPF, but I'll inform you about distributor very soon.

Greetings,
Dom

#142 6 years ago

Please turn the cable on the last picture. The red strand has to face to pin 1! Everything else is fine.

#145 6 years ago

Im considering ordering some spare controllers, any interest?!

#148 6 years ago

For people at tpf:
You may walk over to lermods booth and have a little talk to Robert

#150 6 years ago

Since there was a bad turnaround (NOT from Lermods , of course!) the shipping is again from Germany.
All components are already in production and/or already shipping.

I added a bigger processor, this leaves space for future development!
USB connector is also added so you can update, change colors and settings directly from a connected PC or Laptop.
You can still use a MicroSD and transfer between Pinball and PC

So the Set contains everything you need to replace your old DMD:

-Frame including matching mounting holes. No modification to machine needed like TFT solution
-RGB Panels 192X64 original resolution with stunning contrast and high brightness (can be adjusted)
-Controller (bigger Chip then last version, USB, MicroSD)
-MicroSD - USB Adaptor
-MicroSD Card 8GB
-Power supply
-complete cabeling to connect to machine (prewired, connectors mounted)
-Instruction manual

I choose to stay on save secondary power supply because power supply for DMDs on these machines was a weak point, and caused a lot of DMDs to reboot or not even start.

Installation is really simple and convenient, takes around 10-15 minutes!

If you like to participate, now is the time to order!

Kind regards,
Dominik

Do you subtract VAT for those online prices if exporting? Was there going to be a US distributor? Is there now?

Sorry, no for both cases.
Since a big competitor tries to kick us off the market I don't want to risk my possible distributors being sued and caused legal troubles even if if the're unfounded!

Quoted from Elevatorman:

Was there a preorder list for these or can I purchase one now with Paypal?
Please advise.

Did you check for typos?

On some pc systems file extensions get hidden and if you rename it you probably get a file that is named pin2dmd.key.key instead of the correct pin2dmd.key

Does the key still get displayed after around 30 seconds?
If yes, then the key really doesnt work. If no, something other may be wrong, maybe on input side or configuration.

@rubberducks: the pictures are generated differently
The result will for sure blow you away!
I have never seen such a talented and fast artist (@Malenko) and trust me, if the colors don't fit he wouldn't have used them.
Above claim is also correct:they will be available after testing and confirming they work.
Details will be revealed when it's time to do so.

@crash:
I constantly try to get all needed files to make colorizations for as many games available as possible.
This is by the way done with the help of a lot of known and anonymous contributors. Without their help, there would be no pin2dmd-(xl), no colorizations etc.

#201 6 years ago

What is exactly the issue with your board? Please explain in detail so that I can help you.

#204 6 years ago

Crash I'm going to capture franky in the next few days.
Regarding the issue with your dmd I sent you a pm.

Generally, a capture of all dmd games is possible, but I tend to NOT release them publicly anymore due to several reason I don't want to discuss here in this thread.

Malenko I can send you my redraw of the surfing sonic

Sorry, I don't have a picture, but bottom right side of the blackbox is a good place.
You can als fix it in place with self adhesive velcro tape or similar.

Quoted from lucky1:

No I think he is busy with other tasks like the 128x16 controller pcbs for data east . There are a minimum of 50 threads in at least 10 different forums all about pin2dmd, we would have to check several times a day to keep up. That is not the easiest task if you also have family and a real life job. I think he will answer whenever he comes by the next time.

Thank you for helping out again!!!

I sent out some PMs already

To make things more clear for me and you i suggest to mail me directly about issues!

Like lucky1 said, it's often hard to check all forums, threads etc. It's time consuming very much and i often tend to overlook some threads.
If you mail me directly i can handle these issues much faster and more reliably.
And if there are general issues that affects all boards I will for sure address them publicly so that all customers and people in general will benefit from solutions and suggestions.

Kind regards,
Dom

I've mailed all involved people.
If you're not willing to wit any longer i can fully understand that and will refund immediately. If you have doubts about my honesty, mail me and/or open a paypal case and i'll refund you immediately.

As lucky1 already stated above, the new panels are a cause to the delay but not the only one.
Poor arganisation is also a reason.

Anyways, all open orders will be fullfilled (if panel issues are being solved) or refunded within the next days and after that i will decide what will happen next.

Kind regards,
Dom

Im actually assembling the ordered sets.
Once these are shipped and new panels are on the way you will be able to order again here in my pinside shop or at my homepage Link above from lucky1

It makes no differences if you order and wait until parts arrive or you wait until parts arrive and then order... but normally orders are sold out before they even arrive and I’m not willing to discuss that furthermore... sorry guys.

But in one point you’re right: things like display not working (new panel type) should not happen.

Both my shops clearly indicate the correct state atm! Unfortunately at least the pinside shop doesn't give the option to mark an item as "open for order". That is the reason why both my items are now not on stock here.

Interestingly a lot of people only care little about long shipping times as long as they get their games working again!
And to repeadetly tell everybody:
You have always the option to cancel an order, and since all my overseas orders are handled through paypal, it's secured that you get refunded if you're not satisfied. And the true reason about that is that i do not accept payments through "friends and family" like other "professional sellers" do.

I also don't have the option to store a lot of these panels, since they are pricey and i started this small business out of unemployment and not with a big company or huge funds in the back!

As summary, I always try to improve the service and shipping times get shorter and shorter!!!

The actual batch doesn't have these issues anymore.
Indeed there were a lot of troubles with orders, hardware etc. no doubt about that. I don't want to talk around that, it's a known issue with me as a seller.

I'm actually shipping the open orders in the numbering they arrived.

@berty: yours is also shipping this week.

...and to clarify:
I am also unhappy with the situation in the past, i didn't want to let people wait so long.

Orders are being processed again... there has been some delay due to shortage from supplier and a longer processing time from me.

If you are concerned about not receiving your paid item, I can only repeat that i only accept paypal for overseas payments to avoid doubts about losing money.

Kind regards,
Dom

The devices are used by both professionals and hobbyists all over the world...
Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, France, America, Canada etc.

With the new option to update via microSD card the system gets even more convenient.
The color picker and configuration tool makes easy to change colors even for non-tekkies. No hassling with hex values or Text files.

I'm figuring things out, pms and notifications as well as parcels are already on the way!

russdx you ain't a customer so you have no clue how much things get shipped and what percentage these cases are.
I don't want to talk them small, it's just a fact that unsatisfied customers post way more often than satisfied ones.
If you'd had a closer look you might have noticed that the shop here on pinside IS already in "vacation mode" meaning no orders are possible at the moment

@ all others involved: I totally understand your anger and apologize for your missing shipments.

Kind regards,
Dom
