Quoted from swillie:Excellent beer, and these are only 9$ or so a bomber at Costco...
Damn NC beer mark ups! :-)This is my current favorite starter beer.
Taste almost like you are drinking a dry hopped triple but at only 6.5% you actually still do that later.
Quoted from swillie:Here's what's currently in the beer fridge in my gameroom... still plenty of hops in there, I love imperial IPAs, but as the weather dips the stouts will start taking over.
Looking good in there. The DKML is pretty smooth for a 14% Malt liquor. Let’s start with that
The Mayan Mocha Stout sounds good too. Haven’t had that yet.
I am heading back to 2013.
It was a lousy year for me. My old trusty shop truck blew up,someone bought my old shop and canceled the lease(didn’t give a renewal option after 8 years there), my older brother died unexpectedly at 43,my youngest son was hospitalized and diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. All in that order !
Anyway I plan on erasing that year every chance I get so I am starting here but there is a long ways to go
Quoted from swillie:Dude sorry to hear all this, we need to dip into my cellar for the beers I'd offer you for dealing with all that bad mojo.
The Mayan Mocha is brewed with coffee nutmeg chocolate and habanero peppers. I always keep some stocked. They make a bourbon barrel aged version...haven't seen that one in a long time but found Imperial Mayan just this week which I'm eager to try. That BBA Old Stock looks fantastic... i've only starting cellaring beers this year so have not had the chance to appreciate what a few years age can do.
Thanks was a tough year and I couldn’t help reflecting on it when I popped that cork but most of that stuff is water under the bridge now or never will be anyway
The Mayan sounds good. Balancing the sweet with the spicy. There are a couple similar beers around here but the names escape me right now.
I am moving on to 2014. Was a much better year.
Quoted from way2wyrd:Ive found that most of the buy ups haven't changed the craft of the beer. I do despise big brewing tho.
Hows that one?
--Jeff
Pretty good so far. Like most stouts the flavors are popping a bit more as it warms. Pretty boozie too. I would say it is a bit classier or more refined tasting than Dragons Milk but definitely on that order.
Quoted from mcluvin:Never been a fan of the pumpkin beers. Got me some Sierra Nevada Celebration a couple days ago. Feels like Christmas already
The pumpkin beers always seem too sweet or have an off coconut flavor according to my taste .Also not a fan of coconut so that is why I don’t like the carryover into the pumpkin.
I did have a great Sierra Nevada Narwhal earlier this week too. F552874B-98EB-4777-82C2-6E786C2C6FC6 (resized).jpeg
Quoted from swillie:Only tried Griffin Claw BBA Screaming Pumpkin and it was remarkable.
Thanks for letting me know about this one. Really enjoying it.
Quoted from trilogybeer:The standard version of Black Butte is pretty good . I have never had the version you posted though .
It was good.I was worried about the peated Malt aspect and orange peel but it was really well balanced and not a focal point I am now getting into the Shmaltz.
Quoted from swillie:My nephew and me are having a Founders BBA flight this evening...
That looks excellent. Going to be on the lookout for that CBS
Getting into the holiday spirit now.
Quoted from swillie:How is the CBS tasting? I never did have that flite I mentioned a few posts back. I am going to a CBS keg opening 10am Saturday, supposed to have all the BBA releases on tap, woohoo!
It was great. Very smooth given the ABV flavors were not quite as pronounced as I was expecting but like most stouts it developed more as it warmed.
This one is very good also. First time I have seen it down here.
Quoted from terrapinmark:Chris, you are getting some great Michigan beers down there. I just picked up a CBS and will let it age a bit. I have some Black Note, KBS from 2014.
Cheers!
Those sound great Mark Going to be on the look out for the KBS.
I secured a few bottles of the CBS to sit on but the curiosity was too much for me so I only have two left to age. Will see how that goes
Quoted from trilogybeer:Damn , the place I usually get beer had some CBS but it was $35 a bottle . I typically don't like it when stuff like maple syrup is put into beer , so I didn't want to risk spending that much on a beer I wouldn't like . Is it overly sweet ? or are the flavours balanced nicely ? I prefer beers where the flavors from the malted barley are the centerpiece , not the adjuncts. I do like imperial stouts a lot (probably my favorite style of beer), and lately I prefer the imperial stouts that have not been aged in a bourbon barrel .
It is $22 down here. A couple spots sell for $27. Limit is one bottle per person thoug so had to work around that.
I was hesitant also for exactly the same reason you stated I don’t really like overly sweet beers but it was surprisingly well balanced and not too sweet.
Crossing the King’s Bridge tonight.
Quoted from way2wyrd:Stout greatness on tap tonight.
Lot of great choices on that list.
I have only had a few of them personally because of the way beer distribution is down here but would love to try some of those I have not.
Going with this Stout tonight although I have already had it and not really a huge fan of this years batch. I think the added Rye was a mistake to my taste buds but I need to close it out and move on.
Quoted from swillie:This looks fantastic!!
It was great Swillie
Out of the oven and into the frying pan!
Quoted from way2wyrd:This melange 10 is really good. A hint of chilies with a back of chocolate and brown sugar
Love the Bruery stuff.
Starting with this tonight and lightening up as the evening goes. I like to start with the stronger ones if they are this high ABV.
Quoted from swillie:Tis' the season...
Damn I am on the lookout for this one this year.
Quoted from mcluvin:Yeah, I have a new appreciation for that pic. $25 for a 4 pack at my local Total Wine. No thank you!
Cheaper than and higher quality than a set of TAF apron decals off of ebay
Quoted from way2wyrd:Which batch? Should be on the back. Each one is barreled differently.
https://www.latrappetrappist.com/en/our-trappist-ales/batchregister-la-trappe-oak-aged/
I really like that beer.
-Jeff
That was batch 16. It was great. A little on the “flat” side in terms of carbonation even for the style but it was smooth and flavorful overall.
I think it was dated good for another 20 years but I think it was already starting to pass its prime now just 4 years in.
Quoted from swillie:This one surprised me, very tasty stuff. I poured it in the glass just to show the color, but to be honest I like this one better right out of the bottle for some reason .
[quoted image]
Damn. I don’t think you could have fit another drop in that glass.
Seeing plenty of this 2018 release around here so far.
Seems a little smoother than last years.
Quoted from Jackontherocks:Hard to believe an Orange County beer made it to VA, I use to live in the overrated OC and never found an OC brewery worthy when they first started curious how this one tastes.
It was strong at 16% but a bit too sweet.
Tough one to drink solo would be better in a single 8 or 12 oz pour as a finisher or something.
Quoted from way2wyrd:I busted this open tonight. 16.5% sour stout aged in bourbon barrels with blueberry .
Its yummy
[quoted image]
Trying to figure out which one to enjoy during the Bare Knuckel fight tonight.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgQuoted from jgentry:I love that one. I knew you were not into sours but it's about as light of a sour as you can get and is delicious. Great beer by the pool.
Great beer in the A/C only :-)Step outside in the heat after drinking and it is terrible.
image (resized).jpgQuoted from gliebig:Everyone quit drinking? Been quiet in here.[quoted image]
I got baptized and found religion
12AAC6AA-C1CB-46AA-9FD0-81E5E7D34AA6 (resized).jpegQuoted from SirScott:No CBS here (yet).
Tonight's offering:
[quoted image]
That looks great
Quoted from meSz:Thanks to HEP for bringing this one to my attention....2013 Straffe Hendrix Heritage Ale. Cheers everyone n hope you have a good holiday!!
[quoted image]
You too Vince.
I will join you for a toast to 2013 beers. Almost six years is long enough to wait.
Quoted from BMore-Pinball:so who has these?
https://www.wearyourbeer.com/pinball-spiral-pint-glass-p-42843.html
[quoted image][quoted image]
My oldest son got me one of those a while back. Cool little novelty not ideal to drink out of though.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgQuoted from Peanuts:Another one :[quoted image]
Looks good
Just got a shipment of these
They stopped carrying them down here.
Had to go to the source.
Crates are cool.
Now that my oldest son has gotten into beer I can finally enjoy a flight set up at home.
Set these up in order of ABV
Quoted from swillie:Did you make that flight rack? I like that alot!
No I Was going to make some but my wife reminded me that I will turn it into an major ordeal and that I should try to find something I like already made first.
That was good advice and I found it here. Made out of whiskey barrels.

Looks good I am on the lookout for that variant around here.
Been on a Belgian kick this week.
Quoted from Wake2wood:Did you happen to get the Birthday variant? I looked everywhere and couldn't find.
No unfortunately we only get to choose from what comes down our way. I know this is area and distribution sensitive though but this year we got these variants down here.
All have been great. The wheat wine is a little disappointing just because they turned it into strictly a dessert beer with the apple cinnamon.I like it but would have liked to had a straight wheat wine to go along with that.
The Early Gray tea one is pretty unique.
Quoted from meSz:This is awesome.....
[quoted image]
Barrel aged version?
Very nice Vince.
I drank these two tonight.
Quoted from meSz:Chris, is that a HEP Beer Glass that I don't have?
If you're ever interested in another shipment, let me know. These Bruery beers, you would love! Just don't drink them while working or you'll be known as LEP (Low End Pinball).
no that’s just a local bottle shop glass.
I am always interested in tasty beer exchanges but things have been so dry around here this last year that I have been ordering most of my beer from CA and Belgium. Then the Belgium source went bankrupt.
Craftshack is actually carrying a bigger Belgian variety now that they have teamed up with global beer. Cases of 750mls are $180 delivered so pretty good pricing on those.
Every so often I find something unique around here but it’s far more rare.
At least it looks like the sour craze has died down but I still have to navigate through a summer of IPAs
Quoted from meSz:Put this on the one n done list (for me at least).
[quoted image]
Coconut! Pumpkins even uglier cousin!
Quoted from mcluvin:It is a great disappointment to pay a premium for beer and have it taste like shi*. But I guess that's why they do it. Total Wine is a feast for the eyes when it comes to can art.
Usually the more gimmicky the can the more likely the contents suck.
There are exceptions to the rule of course.
This one is pretty decent despite the can.
So many disclaimers, instructions and acknowledgments. Is it a can of beer of an amusement park ride?
Quoted from mcluvin:Well, I guess it doesn't taste like piss then
[quoted image]
Ryanwritesonthings he might piss on them also but hopefully not in them. .
Quoted from blizz81:What’s your pick of the litter?
Still some on tap here from Black Friday[quoted image]
I would probably go with the 2019 wheatwine if I were picking off that list.
Quoted from blizz81:What’s the fav of the 2022 variants? Haven’t tapped into ours yet.
The Sir Isaac is probably my favorite so far.
Will see how the others age.
Quoted from amxfc3s:That's impressive. There's almost none available retail-wise in NC (at least in my area). The 2023 variants sold out before stores even opened on black Friday. People were standing in line waiting at 630 AM.
You have to know where to look around here.
IMG_5741 (resized).jpegQuoted from meSz:Yeah in CA I can still go to places and buy stuff back to 2019.
I think two things happened, they upped production numbers and people are finding out the expensive variants aren’t as good as the regular version.
I agree the base is tough to beat and at a ratio of three cases to one it’s the best value also.
Cheers Vince. Thank you and Merry Christmas
