I bet there will be a picture of someone banned at the next vfw showcase

    #102 6 years ago

He still hasn't responded to my numerous contact requests. I think I even called his mommy. She's listed as the DNS contact

    #103 6 years ago

This should be made a Sticky so everyone can avoid him.

    #105 6 years ago
    Quoted from DCFAN:

Did he wear off the art in the middle of the playfield in the restore?

Yes. It's the new "blocksand" technique to give decent playfields authentic looking wear so that dimpling is prevented. Vid will be covering this soon in the playfield restoration thread from what the voices in my head tell me.

Fairly sure he was a pinsider a while back. Went by choddard

I bought Randy Fromm's complete kit probably 15 years ago or more. It really helped me develop an understanding of repair when I got into the arcade collecting hobby and later pinball. When I bought a broken TZ at auction I ordered Clays VHS tape on that as well and got everything working. I highly recommend both. But of course, to buy legally from their websites. Thank you guys for all that you have done to help out the noobs.

I texted my buddy that is the operator for most of central PA, out of Harrisburg. He's the biggest around and has 5 or 6 full time employees. He said he has never heard of him. York is about 20 minutes south. This Eric guy sounds like he's full of shit.

    #109 6 years ago
    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

    So what's your point here?
Are you ok with what Guy Pinballeri is pulling here or are you just outraged there isn't enough outrage about other IP theft in pinball. Will you not support efforts to get Guy to stop his pinball IP theft until there is more outrage of unrelated IP pinball theft or are you just trying to raise further awareness of rampant pinball IP theft? Or do you support a double-pronged assault on pinball IP theft - in that you want Clay's rights protected but at the same time you would like to see concurrent efforts to stop other pinball IP theft?
Also do you have any specifics? What other pinball IP theft is upsetting you that you don't see enough attention on?

I'm not sure "a-hole level measurement" is admissible in court. Theft is theft.

GUY PINBALLERI! Takin' the thefty bus to copytown!

I'll bet we could find some case law on that.

    Quoted from Spyderturbo007:

This Eric guy sounds like he's full of shit.

From the stuff others have posted from his Facebook, etc. it is pretty clear he is a "legend in his own mind."

I cringed pretty hard when I saw he actually lists his "Concord Law School" J.D. That is even more embarrassing than "Thomas M. Cooley" (which takes anyone (most of whom are grossly unqualified) then weeds them out), "Florida Coastal" and "Charlotte."

At least the last three I mentioned are accredited by the American Bar Association (though Charlotte is on the verge of losing that).

No wonder he is not a practicing attorney, he probably can't pass the bar and gain admission (he isn't admitted in California (which is a pre-requisite since they allow people from unaccredited law schools to sit for the bar exam) or Pennsylvania).

Looks like Mr. Mentzer has taken down the some information faster than a man using a roll of toilet paper after getting the trots due to a bad bowl of chili. However, too late against being blackmarked and whatever further legal action is conducted.

Taken down what? The RF stuff? -yes, but Clays stuff still looks to be up along with Gottlieb manuals and probably more.

    #114 6 years ago

One phone call to the Mondial group should take care of that.

Since I live fairly close to the area this guy is from and kind of know a little about him as well as a little about the "local pinball community" I'll post what information I can here from memory.

My kids attended the same high school this guy went to (Dallastown High School here in Central PA). He graduated about 15 years before they attended the school. Anyway - after doing a little research I realized I kind of knew of the guy before we got into the pinball hobby. He had a small storefront in Dallastown about 20 years ago with arcade & pinball stuff and rented storage in a building behind the storefront (in the same build I was renting storage in).

Anyway - I never actually talked with him but he seemed like a small time guy who wanted to be more. At the time we were not into the hobby so I never had any experience with him and never even wondered what happened to him until I cam across this post.

Bottom line is he has been around for a long time but in a very small way. I don't ever remember anyone local talking about him since the 1990's and just basically thought he went out of business years ago. Maybe he did and is now trying to get back into the business - I don't know. I just thought I would post what I do know about the guy and his "business".

Hopefully Clay & everyone else will get this resolved and the guy will just quietly go away again.

Just my 2 cents being local to the guy.

    #116 6 years ago
    Quoted from dsuperbee:

Funny that everyone is up in arms about this guy stealing content for his own personal gain, but don't give two shits if someone or a company does the same thing making unlicensed parts/art/etc...

    Exactly

Same guys crying about stolen copyrighted material have avatars of.....wait for it....stolen copyrighted materal

    Copyright infringement is stealing.

    No way around it.

    Quoted from vid1900:

The owners of the IP of any and all avatars on Pinside are welcome to take the necessary legal action to get people to stop, but so far they either haven't noticed or it doesn't seem to be much of a priority.

The actions of this small potatoes pindouche however have not gone unnoticed.

So it's only stealing if the owner notices the theft?

    #122 6 years ago

Maybe the guy has a disability or something? Yes, the copyrighted stuff should come down, but the public skewering seems a bit extreme given none of you have even interacted with him. What if he read this shi* and killed himself?

    #123 6 years ago
    Quoted from vid1900:

I thought it was stealing only if you got caught

    #124 6 years ago
    Quoted from vid1900:

So it's only stealing if the owner notices the theft?

Obviously not. Never heard of anybody getting a C+D for an avatar though so you'd have to figure most people don't care.

And hey I'm no IP lawyer but maybe it falls under fair use?

It just takes a short time, remember the rest of the world does not work like YouTube copyright strikes. Paperwork must be generated for future court action, if required. Part of the preparation. Plus, the weekend is almost upon us, so the timing is not optimal. Some people don't take action until forced, regardless of circumstance.

    #128 6 years ago

You are asking us to sympathize for a law degree failure real estate agent who obviously stole everyone else's proprietary content for his own benefit? A public skewering is in his favor if his actions don't land him in court.

And killing himself ? How far fetched can you be? As in, you can't be serious! If he were to kill himself he obviously had much more issues going on than any lambasting he received on Pinside.

Which you so clearly care about given your own avatar. Unless you're going to make the claim that you took that photo of Angus Scrimm, which is all over the internet, and you own the rights to it.

*edit* Anyone care to hazard a guess as to how much content on the internet is "stolen" under US copyright laws? 99%+?

I hate to out him, but Vid is Angus Scrimm. I think he's entitled to use his own image.

Actually, no. Not unless that's a selfie, or unless it's specified in the contract between model and photographer. Technically the copyright still belongs to the photographer.

    I love stolen content.

Remember building the "ONTV" decrambler boxes before there was cable?

Remember copying the EPROMs from Atari 2600 cartridges, so you could " have every game"?

Remember turning Gauntlet into Gauntlet II for $10 in parts (a $2300 savings)?

Remember your phreaker box that could make free long distance calls from any pay-phone?

Remember sneaking DAT recorders into concerts? One guy took in the mike, one guy the recorder, one guy the blanks....

    history repeats itself

Hilton give it a rest on the predator thing, this thread is about Clay defending his content. 90% of hobbyists wouldn't be as competent as they are without his guides.

    #144 6 years ago

His Game Plan board guide sure came in handy.

    #145 6 years ago

He's not an attorney. His Web page ericmentzer.com lists him as having only completed 2 years of law school (it is a 4 year program) at Concord University. Concord University Law School is an online University based in Los Angeles that is not accredited by the American Bar Association.

    #146 6 years ago

Maybe he was taking the "Executive JD" degree, which is only three years. So he would have been most of the way to earning the degree. I am not sure what the hell you do with an "EJD", but it has an extra letter in it, so it must be better.

    https://www.concordlawschool.edu/academic-programs/executive-juris-doctor-curriculum

I like the idea of the school juicing students for 4 years instead of the traditional 3 years for a JD. The traditional 3 year JD programs at most law schools are already one year too long.
