It was talked about as a feature, but never came to fruition. They may have thought this would be a similar situation - but of course there's a big difference in talking about a feature then removing or scaling it back versus actually having people play it and then remove it.
This isn't the first time for JJP. Remember the drama when they started removing features from The Hobbit...(but that was supposed to be due to Warner Bros... hmmmm...)
