Just picked up a Model X p100d. Joining the club..

Quoted from jeffspinballpalace:

Good looking car. I like that it can get you where you want to be fast. I didn't like that you couldn't haul a pin in it.

Yah - I can’t buy cars based on pin hauling. I’ve bugged friends or rented vans. Mostly I just buy NIB.

Only bummer is I got 22” wheels. Which kills the range by 15% vs the stock 20”. Then again speeding and abusing ludicrous mode kills range way more.

Ordered my charger for my upcoming MX P100D, and getting a 100A circuit installed. Just flipped over the PGE bill to the EV rates for the midnight charging.

Looking forward to this thing. The wife agreed to drive my Macan GTS for a while, so I can break in the P100D.

Quoted from jeffspinballpalace:

Jesus used a 115v wall socket in his garage to charge his 90kW Model 3 and he will need 10 hours @ 15.6 cents = $1.56.

It took me an hour to stick in a 80A 240V circuit into a Tesla home charger. Typically I charge at 15 KWh. With a 115V outlet they max out at <2KWh. It's cheap and easy to get a setup that gets you topped up after a daily commute in <3 hours. The car allows you to tell it when to charge. Most electricity providers have reduced rates after 11pm.

Anyway. - mine is a modelx p100d. Which I constantly floor in ludicrous mode. Nuking my charge and killing my range. It was worth every penny to get the gut wrenching 2.8s 0-60 in a large suv form factor.

Quoted from jeffspinballpalace:

Very good info. These practical examples help a lot and congrats on the X.

On home charger - how much was it? Did electric company need to connect another feed? Maybe not since you mentioned charging at a 15kWh speed.

On mileage fluctuations - let’s say you leave home 100% charged. You drive all day WITHOUT flooring the car once, fast is ok but not aggressive. You get home and write down you drove y miles and had z% left on battery. Next day, leave home with 100% battery and drive about the same route all day but you drive like a dB azzhat from Hell. You get home and write down y miles and ?% of battery?

On pinball - can you fit a pinball in your suv? I believe someone answered no before and they’d rent a vehicle for pin moves. My Santa Fe requires the hinge bolts to be removed in order to slide the head down a bit and to fit - a pita.

My house has typical 200A service. So no additional feed. If I wanted to install a 90A circuit and charge at say 20KWh at home I would prob have to get a 400A feed. But even for 2 electric cars this is likely overkill. But it would be pretty sweet.

The car has a really nice display showing average energy used and projected range. If you are driving the car fast and hard, just like an ICE car, you loose maybe 15% or more range being a maniac. Except, as mentioned, the car regains some energy from breaking. Which actually helps a lot.

However if you drive normally, around the speed limits, with stock wheels you get close to 300mi on one full charge. Although for daily commutes, I charge only to 80% at night, and won't let the car go below 20% before charging again.

Most Tesla owners just plug in when they park at home. So pretty much every day I wake up to a car sitting at 80% charge. From my phone I can tell the car to charge to 100% if I'm going on a long trip.

All in all, it's a great experience. I get a better car, with acceleration that beats most exotic sport cars. And wake up everyday with a full tank. Also, Tesla just updated the fleet with new s/w that's a big bump in features and functionality. This is super refreshing compared to how other mfg's s/w is what it is when you purchase it.

There's negatives, but there's also many positives if you watch the whole thing. That tesla has designed the cheapest and lightest electric motor, that they've also designed the most powerful one by stacking neodynium magnets, that their battery pack has phenomenal engineering that will likely last a long time.

Having more parts than necessary, or more screw sizes/lengths is never a good thing. They aren't knocking the design necessarily, just commenting it could be done better. Of course Tesla has only had 10 years to learn how to manufacture, so they certainly aren't doing bad.

LOL. Criticism from a company that is getting their A** KICKED in electric by a startup. HAHAHA. Easy to criticize. With nothing that competes YEARS LATER.

Whatever....

#2248 5 years ago

So they design a frame with better crash performance vs most others, and it gets criticized for too many parts.

I’m sure they are going through many revisions invisible to consumers. No doubt they have a cost reduction plan running. Which is why the consumer price isn’t where they want it yet.

#2261 5 years ago

Gotta let go of the past. But if you can’t, you can buy a far inferior electric jaguar or Audi. ;-p

Ugggh just bought Tesla #2.

We own a Model X P100D. And after a month with it, I felt done with my Macan. But I wasn't on board with the S.

Today I went to drive a Model 3 Performance, and just fell in love. It drives amazing. Powerful. And fun as hell. Dammit. My only gripe is the trunk. I like a hatchback. But I just want to own and drive this car. Sorry Porsche. Maybe I will be back for a Taycan some day.

So I ordered a Blue Performance with black/white interior. The demo car had this scheme. I didn't think I liked the blue. But with the performance setup, I really liked it.

Rivian doesn't ship until late 2020 or early 2021. That's not throwing the gauntlet down to Tesla. _SHIPPING_ the Rivian truck and SUV is throwing the Gauntlet down.

So for now, its a spec sheet, and a 2 year pre-order. We all know how hard it is to go from a nice prototype and website to actual production.

Tesla has plenty of runway and a HUGE head start to get the Tesla truck to market in volume before Rivian does. While also ramping and shipping Model Y in the meantime, based on the Model 3 design.

With all new startups the climb and overwhelming opposition always seems insurmountable. Until it isn’t. I’ve been in a startup since 2006 that eventually beat “the man” in its own game. Including a bloody lawsuit battle lasting 3 years.

Anyway - they are using the high end EV adventure niche as an entry point which makes sense for a startup. I think there is space for new players here. They don’t have to be huge to be successful..

As an owner of a Model 3 Performance and Model X P100D, seeing this stuff going on really depresses me. While my service so far has been exceptional in the Bay area, this sort of stuff could truly ruin Tesla. Esp since they rely on no marketing, and mostly word of mouth and viral marketing.

So much amazing tech, forward thinking. And this is such a dumb ass problem. Sure you can hand waive it as growing pains. But model 3 puts them in the main stream. And now this is festering into a major block. I hope it's their highest priority in 2019. As people are burned, they don't give second chances.

And a Tesla's lovers objective opinion about the issue:

I jumped in and paid for the $2000 FSD "upgrade. Why?

Includes a HW3 upgrade. And they are tying many new features to the FSD package. SO even if FSD doesn't ship for 2 years, many features will require the upgrade.

$2K was a relative deal so I jumped on it.

Although I'm jumping ship from my Model 3 Performance the day the Model Y Performance ships. Or some other company makes a better car.

Quoted from Pinless:

Do any M3 owners have regrets about not getting an S?

How long did it take you to get used to just having the large center display?

I own a model 3 performance, along with a P100D Model X. I love both cars, but the M3P is 100x more fun to drive.

Vs a Model S - Well the M3P has far superior handling, and is the most insane goKart fun I've ever had with a car (I've been a porsche guy up until we switched to Tesla's). The cargo space is nice in Model S. if you need it, it's a great option. otherwise the Model 3 is more advance and more fun to drive.

Now the new long range Model S does change things a bit. At 370 miles it's the longest range sedan in existence. So if you need the best range, it's another reason to go with a Model S.

Buying a Tesla is like buying an Apple Watch. Sure it's cool but not at the price they want.

I can buy a really nice car for $30k and buy gas for years and still be way ahead of the game.

Also remember, once new tech comes out, these current cars will be worthless ie, range doubles or triples or charges in a short period of time.

these current cars will be the Plasma of flat screen TV's.

Actually it's your gas car that's going to be worthless.

Get your facts right - Even old Tesla's with "inferior tech" hold their value better than most used cars. The only really old tech here is stuff that burns the remains of dinosaurs to get around town. versus the ones that drive me around after being charged from the panels on my house.

Question for those with a older Tesla...I've been looking at used Model S's (2014-2015) and was wondering if the large updates include those models. Would those models get the new features like Camp mode that was just released during the holidays?

Much better to get a new 3 vs an old S. While the old S are nice cars, you usually can't get it upgraded to the newer driving computer or newer computer used for the display.

Quoted from Darscot:

I always find the freedom of gasoline or diesel an interesting concept. What percentage of locations have electricity as compared to fuel pumps. I've never understood the whole gas is more available narrative. If you really need long range its probably easier and safer to carry batteries than it is to carry liquid fuel. Solar charging trailers are available and they work anywhere.

I find far more freedom owning 2 Tesla's now vs owning ICE cars. The main difference? 99% of the time I fuel at home. Producing my own fuel on my roof. I get 375mi range in one charge. That's a lot.

Just took my daughter to a cheer competition in Bakersfield. Had 8 Superchargers to choose from on the way. Decided to stop in Kettleman City. We were hungry. But the car finished charging too quickly for us to finish. The total round trip cost came in around $15. The car did 90% of the highway driving. My daughter watched Netflix (a new cheer series) on the main 17" screen in the car in surround on our way home when we stopped to charge for 25min. We were happy people.

I've never been so free and happy. Gone are the burdens of having to stop to fill a tank every freaking week for $80. And once every few months, when i don't charge at home, I enjoy a few minutes of Netflix/hulu/disney plus on the screen, or scarf down food trying to beat the charger.

Never again will I waste time with an ICE car. $80 a week for gas. Every gallon pumping out 5lb of waste. 5-10 min to fuel. Yah. Times 52 weeks. $4K per year. maybe 4-8 hours of time fueling. Traded for 0 time fueling at home. And the occasional 1% of the time I travel, enjoying food and netflix during that 25m charge, when I needed to stop anyway after driving 370mi straight.

Good riddance Dinosaur juice.

Quoted from jawjaw:

$80 a week? Gas sure is a lot more expensive in CA than TX. It would take me quite a while to recoup the premium of a Tesla here. My current VW gets 35mpg easily and hardly takes a minute to fill up. It has a small tank so only takes around $25 or less to fill up. Hardly call that a burden since gas stations are practically everywhere. It would be more of a burden to run low on batteries with no charging stations around or not be able to charge because power outage but I do get your point. If you keep the Tesla long enough and it holds up well, it would start paying for itself.

Gas pumps don't work in power outages. Same problem for yah there. Also, my house happens to have 15KW of solar, 3 powerwalls. I can charge my cars off the grid. In Armageddon maybe I'm screwed if someone sees I still have power and drivable cars. Besides a couple of shotguns, haven't solved that issue yet.

Yah - I had a Porsche Macan GTS before tesla. Runs off premium. There are cheaper hybrid cars. Absolutely. But the task of getting gas does suck. Some stations are nice. Some are dirty, with begging bums. F' that. The there was the f'ing oil changes. $70 at jiffy lube. Or a mess at home. F' that. Then there is the service stuff. The required, and often expensive 15K, 25K. F' that. It's all gone. And it means something to me.

I get range anxiety for electrics. I had it. My wife had it. Then you own one for a while and realize it's a bullshit concern (if it's a Tesla. Other networks aren't there. And it's fair to criticize that). SC's are smartly everywhere. You wake up with 370 mi range. Granted if you live in a super remote place with huge amounts of daily driving, don't get an electric. For the 99% of us, living in society, they are amazing.

Quoted from phil-lee:

Despite solar the primary source of electricity for electric vehicles will come from nuclear power plants. The first waste from nuclear production /experimentation is still here, as is all nuclear waste ever produced. It will stay around, and hazardous, for 85000 years. There is no "Disposal" method, nowhere to put it, nobody wants it.
Electricity produced by nuclear power is not Green. You do nothing to help the Planet by using electric vehicles unless 100% of recharging is performed using solar, wind, an impossible task unless your trips are confined to a small area.
The psychological benefits are immense though, as it makes one feel good.

Actually, modern nuclear power plants are awesome. And should some day dominate over other renewable sources like solar and wind. There is a lot of fear because of the messed up history. TerraPower (Bill Gates) designed a new reactor that they are trying to build now. It runs off the waste from all the old reactors. It's safe by design, can't melt down. https://terrapower.com/productservices/twr

The point is, electric cars run off an evolving energy source. Some might be coal now, nuclear, renewable. It's getting better and better every year. Yay.

Also interesting reading since it's a common discussion of EV vs ICE. https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/12/is-it-true-that-a-tesla-creates-more-pollution-than-a-conventional-car/

Quoted from jawjaw:

True about wide spread power outages. However, I can recall many times in the past when my house didn't have power but others did. Hurricane Ike was the worst. Didn't have power for two weeks. Businesses in the area had power with a few days after storm and so did my work across town. Those times are pretty rare though. It would be nice to have an extra excuse not to go to work lol.
I would have huge range anxiety. I already get anxious when the needle gets way down on empty and there are gas stations everywhere. Maybe I am not looking hard enough but I rarely see charging stations in my area. I do see a ton of Tesla's on the road, though. I imagine with long ranges most people just charge at home and don't need extra stations.
There is a house in my neighborhood with a roof full of solar panels. I cannot imagine that being cheap to install or cheap to deal with when new roof is needed. I would love to knock out my electric bill but it's not that expensive even in the hot summers. My water bill is the killer. They tack on all kinds of taxes for flood control but you rarely see any work done and flooding just gets worse.

$65 a month too much to replace a chunk of your electric bill? In fact if you subscribe to one of the systems below and live in a place like TX probably you end up with more money per month. Add a power wall and you have your own gas station even if the grid is down.

Ever been in a disaster? Gas is gone from lines in days. It’s a false sense of security.

Energy independence is awesome. Yah using electricity and getting off gas is an adjustment. But it’s better in every way, except long distance travel. And Tesla has already made that work.

Also note that Tesla is converting charging stations over time to solar and battery. So even in a disaster or power outage it’ll be possible to charge at home or long distance.

If you have the itch, try the car while you still have an ICE. Won’t take long to realize what life is like without putting gas in a car.
