Good looking car. I like that it can get you where you want to be fast. I didn't like that you couldn't haul a pin in it.

Anyone with any experience with the reduced range towing a boat on a model X? If I go the SUV route, need it tow my small bass boat...probably 2000 lbs.

I wouldn't haul a pin in a $100,000 car. Much better to rent a cargo van for $30 with unlimited miles.
Quoted from robertmee:I got to test drive a fellow pinsiders model S. It is a fantastic car. I don't like the sparseness of the model 3 as much. Finally got to sit in a model X recently, and honestly that's probably my favorite now if I choose to go the EV route. My concerns are more with the viability of Tesla as a company right now, not so much the cars.
Keep an eye on August's EV sales numbers due in a couple of days. Those should be very interesting and will give a better idea of where Tesla is actually at, versus the never-ending media crapstorm.

Yah - I can’t buy cars based on pin hauling. I’ve bugged friends or rented vans. Mostly I just buy NIB.
Only bummer is I got 22” wheels. Which kills the range by 15% vs the stock 20”. Then again speeding and abusing ludicrous mode kills range way more.
a while i was looking at a used tesla buying guide i found somewhere talking about how difficult it is to figure out what you are getting as the available feature/packages lists change more often than once a year. (this is for private sales, buying a used one from tesla they seem to publish the stats clearly).
anyways the article mentioned using ludicrous mode more than X times voided the battery warranty as something else to look out for. wondering what the truth is to that given all the other misinformation out there.

I think misinformation. Tesla went through some growing pains, with ludicrous and launch control, faced a lawsuit, and ultimately capitulated and opened up ludicrous without launch control and without power limitations. I don't think there was ever a warranty issue.
That article you posted is from Jan, 2017....alot happened during the course of last year.
Test drove a Model 3 Performance today. Simply out of this world. Everything was effortless, fluid, and solid.
P.S., Rocketship.
Ordered my charger for my upcoming MX P100D, and getting a 100A circuit installed. Just flipped over the PGE bill to the EV rates for the midnight charging.
Looking forward to this thing. The wife agreed to drive my Macan GTS for a while, so I can break in the P100D.
Congrats on your purchase! Welcome to the Tesla Family. My performance Model 3 is coming in October.

Both Mercedes and BMW have been making cruddy compliance EVs for years, but I’m cautiously optimistic that they can field truly stunning competitors to Tesla. I also have an eGolf so I’m less optimistic about VW’s ability - that car is at least ten years behind.
However, I wonder how they will compete on price, given Tesla’s dominance and economies of scale in battery production, and Mercedes and BMW having to outsource their batteries from third parties. The battery is far and away the largest cost for the car.
Shocking that BMW still has nothing but a concept car at this point, and that Audi is unlikely to launch anything until 2020. I predict extremely low volumes of the Mercedes, 500 to 1,000 per month starting in Q3 2019.
And of course, the reuters article is typically slanted and riddled with inaccuracies. Model 3 sales will be closer to 100,000 this year, not 50,000. They’ve already sold 38,000 and should be able to do 20k+ each month for the rest of the year.
And Reuters conveniently leaves out the fact that the fast charging network is Europe-only and is likely to work with Tesla vehicles as well (since it is an independent startup). I’m not super confident of their ability to scale yet - they are averaging less than one charging location a month so far. There are six in place and seven under construction according to their website. They are offering introductory flat rates of a fixed $10 per charge but my understanding is that they want to charge closer to actual gas fueling costs. They have to make a profit on this, unlike Tesla who only has to break even.

agreed.. just look at the electric car BMW has today. less range, high price tag, not quite up to par with the same quality of other BMW's. If nothing else, any of these companies releasing electric cars are doing so as an R&D case, possibly using it to offset carbon credits, but they will have a tough time catching up. I don't blame any of them for trying, I just don't know how successful any of them will be.
i have an audi compliance ev, 2017 etron sportback. works perfect for me as my round trip commute is just about equal to the 16 miles of range. a tank of gas lasts me about 750 miles. at any rate, i really like the car and got a great lease deal on it as nobody is buying them.
plan on handing it back in though when it lease is up at the end of 2019 and excited there will be more full EV options out there as carrying around two power trains seems like all the maintenance (especially for notorious audis) , more complexity.
however, this car base model started at $41k MSRP, but audi hasnt talked about the full EV sportback (one of 2020 models) pricing but seems $60k is the starting point for the first SUV one. so will have to figure out what to do with my new found appreciation of cushy interiors (first non toyota/honda) as looks like audi may be off the table.
hopefully by this time next year when i start looking seriously, Tesla will be on more solid ground than now as that looks best $40k option on paper.

Another year and half away ... and with a measly 200 mile range. Hardly a major competitor. But that’s just the fanboy in me talking. I’m sure there will be plenty of people getting a woody over MB’s offering.
Wow, huge news for August.
In the United States, Tesla sold more cars than either Audi OR Mercedes-Benz. Total cars. Not electric cars. TOTAL. By more than 10%. With three car models.
Oh yeah and they basically tied with ALL of BMW’s sales in the USA.
Just let that sink in for a moment.
Back of the napkin Tesla’s revenues from the Model 3 alone in August exceeded one billion dollars. This has exceeded all of my expectations. Model 3 sales should continue to grow month after month.

That is great. I am not a fan of German cars.
Quoted from DCFAN:That is great. I am not a fan of German cars.
Agreed....much prefer a US company out perform German competitors. I drive an Italian car so anything that puts the screws to the Germans, I'm all for
BTW, What Car just released their reliability report. My Alfa was in the top 3. Tesla was dead last. I've noted before that the Model 3 was rushed to production to meet numbers. Tesla needs to shore up this quickly. Alfa to this day suffers from reliability perceptions due to ills of the past. It's a hard label to shake.
Delivery date just received .... September 26th I'll officially be driving a 3. Pretty stoked.
Anyone want to buy a 2013 Toyota RAV4? Awesome pin hauler.....
Elon is turning into a modern day John Delorean. For the sake of the company, he needs to be removed as CEO. He can be the silent technology director behind the scenes.
Yeah, I’m starting to agree with the calls for Musk to step back from Tesla. I love that idea of silent director. They need his vision, but his recent antics are definitely hurting an otherwise amazing company.
Glossed over by the media, however, is the incredible sales in August!! Model 3 is amazing.

Maybe Elon should move up to chairman and promote two to backfill the CEO and President roles.
If the price of the stock and company go down enough in value I suspect Apple would swoop in since they have the cash and the desire to be in the car tech sector.

You mean the one where he tokes a blunt on air?
Quoted from crwjumper:Before you call for Elon to step down, watch the interview with Joe Rogan above. In full.
Exactly... I don't think he even breathes it in.. it's such a short part of the interview, but the media takes a snapshot and makes it look like he smoked through the entire interview.
I've said for months the stock is going to take a battering until Q3 financials are released.
I think Musk knows what he's doing too. That guy Rogan is a /major/ YouTube star and a mega petrol-head who was always getting the figures wrong on Teslas... and Musk convinced the guy to buy a P100D. Very smart marketing if you ask me. These are not the actions of someone out of control, or someone in desperation. The media is spinning it as negatively as they can.
Did anyone watch the Mercedes EQC launch video? It was... bizarre.

You know, I've given you credit when you post facts, and you've had some interesting points. But now you've gone off the rails if you are trying to spin yesterday's events as positive. Your fandom is overtaking your logic.
Give me a break! It was one puff and the joint was part tobacco part weed. Blown way out of proportion! Watch the whole video. The guy is a genius! We need more people like Elon that looks ahead to the future instead of in the rear view mirror. GO ELON!
The share price isn't plummeting because he smoked weed. It's plummeting because two more senior executives have left ... and meanwhile Musk's drinking whiskey, smoking weed, and talking bro-science with Mr. Bro Science himself, Joe Rogan.
The execs who are departing are just the latest, and a number have deserted the sinking ship already. They won't be the last.
He has 2-3 months to cook up another pack of lies to pump up the share price before the company likely faces restructuring and his departure.
If that $1Bn bond matures with the share price at current levels, they'll need to pay it in cash.
If the share price isn't in the ~$400 region, then their cost of borrowing given the debt burden, cash burn, and Musk's tenuous grip on reality will be so high it's either not an option or will quickly bankrupt the company.
Selling more shares if it's not ~$400 will drop the share price further, worsening their problems .....
He better come up with something quick, if the board / shareholders / SEC don't boot him out first.
Rubberducks go back to the other thread where you can talk about your unsubstantiated bs.
Look at the facts! Tesla is doing just fine! Model 3 is the 5th best selling sedan in the USA. Their sales have beaten BMW's entire line for the month of August.
Their growth has been crazy good the last few months. Just wait til you see numbers at the end of the quarter! Tesla is going nowhere! Deal with it.
Competition is at least 3 years behind Tesla. By the time they introduce their models Tesla will be introducing Base Model 3,Model Y and then The Roadster.
Majority of people love the cars Tesla build. Two of the top 5 trade ins for Model 3 Are Honda Accord and Honda Civic. Those cars are 1/2 the cost of the model 3!
As for the share price. That will rebound when the 3rd quarter numbers come in. I just don't get why there are people that are against Tesla. This BEV movement is real and is happening. It's just a matter of time.
Quoted from Nilroc:Look at the facts! Tesla is doing just fine!
I watched that entire interview with amazement.. He stated an interesting fact... there are only 2 car companies that have never filed for bankruptcy, Ford and Tesla. Both of them were really close to shutting it's doors in 2008 when the crash happened, but they continued on (Ford did get a loan, not a bailout, and they paid it back in full unlike Chrysler and GM).
