Was it the place with the famous Mac n Cheese in Clarkston? If so, you were at Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen. Kid Rock's favorite place.

I think he owns the place if this is the one with the micro brew. Believe he and Guy Fieri were there filming a DDD show.

    Quoted from JethroP:

    Forgot this one:
Got front row tickets to The O'Jay's back in about 2000 in Dayton, OH. I think I stood out being one of the few white guys there, besides waving the old LP I was holding hoping I could get it autographed. After the encore (and no autograph) we filed out of the music center. Being the front row meant we were the last to leave. As we walked out and were walking down the hall a guy runs up and asks me if I want to meet The O'Jay's? The guy is William Shelby of Lakeside. I'm like...."sure." So we turn around and he leads us backstage, downstairs, and down a long hall with people all lined up to meet the players. Probably 50 people in line, and Shelby walks us past everyone....past the Mayor of Dayton, etc., to the front of the line. Knocks on the door, and we're invited into their dressing room. Drinks, hors d'oeuvres, fresh fruit trays....geeze, and we're chatting, photos, and autograph in my old 70's album. That was cool. I think they really appreciated I had one of their first LP's and had been a fan.

They knew you weren't a Back Stabber.

Yeah, I guess they remembered me from that Love Train.

    Quoted from Budman:

I was an extra in the Brady Bunch episode when they visit Kings Island Amusement Park near Cincinnati. The cast stayed at our hotel as well so we saw the kids in the arcade everyday. Boys were friendly, Jan was ok, Marsha, not so much. I was in the log ride scene. When the scene was finished the stars all clapped for us and Alice patted me on my 12 year old butt. Haven't washed it since.

Cool! Are you in here somewhere, preserved for eternity? I didn't see a log ride. There was a canoe ride.

Man looking through this reminds me of when I was that age. The girls were so ridiculously foxy back then, and not overweight like most are these days. What a time that was. And they wore those skimpy outfits. I was in a constant daze all the time from just looking at them at high school every day.

I was a “walking around extra”
When Alice yells “ the pony express rides again” then runs off; she ran by me on her right. I never have been able to pick me out of the crowd. My brother spent a long time at the shooting gallery with “ Bobby”.

Me and my family were at Sun Valley lodge at the ice skating rink out back a few summers ago. My kids were on the outside of the rink holding on the rails and trying to skate. I noticed a man skating around and doing tricks and thought he was pretty good. Well, I went down to check my kids and one of them fell down and was crying. The guy I had seen earlier came up and picked him up and asked him if he was alright. That's when I realized who he was. It was Scott Hamilton . When I was a kid in the 60's me and my friend met Dick Van Dyke in Scottsdale ,Arizona. He was sitting at the bar in a restaurant . We got his autograph. Nice guy.

Astronauts and UFO investigators. My Dad's boss at Northwestern University in the 1960s was Dr. J. Allen Hynek. Dad went with Hynek on a number of UFO investigations for Project Blue Book and did most of Hynek's write-ups of the incidents. Jacques Vallee, another famous UFOlogist, was a close friend of my parents. Some heavy living room conversations in those days!
Another co-worker of Dad's at Northwestern was Dr. Karl Henize, who flew on Spacelab in 1985, and died on Mt. Everest doing research. We visited the Hyneks and the Henizes at their homes a number of times.
Astronaut Michael Collins of Apollo 11 was still a cadet when Dad and I picked him up at the train station in Evanston, IL to give him a ride over to Northwestern U. I remember riding in the back of our VW and that he was wearing a flight suit. Probably flew there in a trainer.
I met Neal Armstrong in 1973 on an eclipse cruise off the coast of Africa. I had gotten his and Isaac Asimov's autographs, but lost them years ago.
Lots of telescopes and stars and planets in my childhood!

Popular with the ladies that one.

Got to know Dale (Katechis) when I lived in Lyons, Colorado. He's pretty famous among beer drinkers! He was Lyons Classic Pinball's landlord, too.

    A bunch.

Met N-Sync three days in a row at the top of the New Otani Hotel (we called it the Unchi Otani) in Tokyo the week their No Strings Attached album came out and they blew up worldwide. We chatted in line at the American-style breakfast buffet at the top of the hotel each day. Our translator was a huge fan, but she chose to eat at the Japanese buffet on the ground floor and missed them that first day. She went with us the next day hoping to run into them again - we did and they were kind enough to pose with her for a picture when I asked. Of the 5, Chris and Joey were the most chatty. I remember Chris being obsessed with getting the hot new mp3 watch while in Tokyo. We ran into just him in the elevator days later and she showed off the one he got. He was very excited, but man, was it an ugly watch. We told them that one of our voice actors, Ashley Angel was in a new Lou Perlman band (O-Town) and they told us to tell him to be very careful because he was a bad man (and some specific examples). We relayed the message.

Randomly ran into Matt Groening at a trade show and we talked for much longer than I thought he would be interested in participating. Seems like a great guy. I had no idea he has a lisp since I don't think I'd ever heard him talk, just read stuff about him. Super-down-to-earth guy. Politely asked for my business card, which was a nice out for the conversation.

Gary Shandling briefly outside a production studio office. This was way back when he had his It's Garry Shandling Show on. I couldn't believe it was him in the flesh and he assured me it was. It was such a random encounter, and I was a big fan of his work. Definitely fanboyed a little on that one.

Verne Troyer, Snoop Dogg, Jason Sudeikis, Macy Gray, Fleetwood Mac male members (ha!), Steven Spielberg and a bunch of others I've run into unexpectedly at trade shows. In the Nintendo booth, Spielberg cut the line for the brand new unreleased Nintendo Wii with his kids and apologized to us (we were in front of the line at that point), which was nice.

I’ve worked and still work with the cast and crew of Star Trek TNG, Discovery, Picard as well as a bunch of Netflix programming.

I used to work as a sports editor so the number of famous sports people I've met is endless. However, two of the most notable non-sports moments both happened in Florida.
In the late 80s' I ran into John Candy at the Dollhouse in Ft. Lauderdale. He was drunk off his ass, could barely walk and was being escorted out as I sat at the bar.
In the early 90s I was at a small private gathering in a bar in Orlando and didn't realize the musicians I was partying with were Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover and Deep Purple.

    Quoted from Elvishasleft:

Did you ask him to do the turn water into wine trick?

No, because I don't drink. But I used to do drugs, and in fact, first time I remember meeting him I was high on pot. Later I dropped some acid and ran into him again. We still keep in touch. He's a good friend to have around.

Met Howie Mandel in Las Vegas about 10 years ago. Man what a nice guy. Made my whole trip because I'm a huge fan of him.

I keep remembering these other random ones from over the years.

In the 90s, at a business meeting in a hotel in Newport Beach, I'm walking down the hall and who comes right by? Jerry Mathers. I mean, even though he was old at that point, you couldn't miss him. I said as I walked by hey its the Beav!

In the 80s at the Flamingo Hotel, standing in the gift shop, John Ashton who played Taggart on Beverly Hills Cop. Just one of those sightings where you go, hey, there's that guy! From that show!

In the late 80s I think it was, in a jewelry shop on St Thomas, standing right next to me buying a watch, Tom Bosley, or Mr C on Happy Days.

Football quarterbacks: In the late 70s in Las Vegas, Joe Namath. He was sitting at a bar with 2 or more hot chicks, and we were in a long winding line waiting to get into a buffet or a show or something. Everyone in line walked right by him, and he laughed and talked to everyone as we went by. Totally out of the blue one time on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, walked into some random bar and Jim McMahon was sitting there. I'm like, hey, there's that guy! I was pretty wasted. I think he was too. In fact, everyone was pretty wasted. For some reason, every time I ended up on Bourbon Street, I got wasted.

We used to go to Chicago a lot for work in the 90s, and a coworker liked to go to Buddy Guy's club to eat dinner then hang out and listen to the bands. And party, that is, get drunk. There usually was a pretty damn good party there. He wasn't always there, but one time he showed up. He went onstage and played for literally like 30 seconds and brought the entire house down. Damn he is good. As we were going out later and walking by the bar, there he was, just basically hanging out and helping behind the bar. Emboldened by a lot of alcohol, I went right up to him and said hi, told him I'm a big fan, and thanked him for the great entertainment and good times. He smiled and said thank you back to me. Legend.

Oh, there's been a few that I recall:

    * Jean Stapleton (Mrs. Archie Bunker) from my hometown, regularly. An awesome warm genuine woman.

    * Karl Rove, advisor to Bush 43 - spent a night working with him
    * Robert Ballard, Titanic discoverer - spent a night working with him
    * Mark Kelly, astronaut (now AZ Senator!) - spent a night working with him
    * James Franklin, PSU football coach - spent a night working with him

    * Linda Vaughn, at the time, everyboy's dream, 70s 'Miss Hurst' - meet-and-greet, cool signed Hurst poster
    * Bud Faubel, '50s and '60s race driver and NHRA record holder (1,400 HP in the day!) - my neighbor
    * Nellie Fox, famed White Sox shortstop - I lived 2 doors from his brother, played pitch-and-catch with him countless times as a kid when his team wasn't on the road.

    * Lee Greenwood, country star - spent a day working with him (and eating KFC in his tour bus, LOL)
    * Bill Anderson, country star - spent a day working with him
    * Kenny Vance and his group, past lead vocalist for Jay & The Americans - spent a night working with him

    * Jimmy Chalfont & Steve Whiteman of KIX/The Shooz - at several midnight parties that I should forget.

    * Peter Rivera, Rare Earth - Jerry Corbetta, Sugar Loaf - Mike Panera, Alice Cooper and Blues Image - Denny Noda, Cannibal & the Headhunters - booked them for a corporate gig and sat up til 5 AM reliving the good old days of rock-and-roll while eating salads and kicking back Fiji waters, LOL

    * Alan Jackson - all venue access 1999 in Las Vegas, back when you had room-to-roam with one.

    * Payne Stewart, golf great - private sitdown at Kemper Open
    * Mark O'Meara, golf great - private sitdown at another Kemper Open
    * John Daly, at another Kemper Open

    * Boston Red Sox pitcher Luis Tiant, one of my old favorite players, while working at a 'packie' outside Hyannis MA on a slow Saturday night. We sat and chatted Bosox baseball for about 2 hours off-and-on.

    * Legendary Redskins linebacker (back in the day), Sam Huff

    * Mike Pence, politician - at a meet-and-greet at a USMCA rally for passage of a new NAFTA, early 2020.

    * Mike Ditka of 'da Bears' - at his restaurant in Chicago a couple times

    .... and my all-time favorite:
Mr. Neil Armstrong, moon explorer - spent an evening working with him and one of the nicest, humblest men I will ever get to meet, stayed in touch via his secretary for some years after.

Funny story. Worked at a golf course when I got out of the
Service in early nineties. Sitting around bullshitting in the
Maintenance shack during a thunderstorm and someone posed
the same question . The quietest dude in our big group told us his
crazy ass sister's claim to fame was fucking Johnny paycheck
after he had played at the local roller rink.
To this day dam near 30 years later it.still tickles the shit

Oh, that reminds me about meeting Tobey Maguire at The Grove in LA. We were waiting to go in for the premiere of one of the later Star Wars (2? 3?) and I turn around and he's in line literally right behind me. He is VERY SHORT in real life, like maybe 5'4" or something (just looked on the internet and it says he's 5'8" - that is not true. Having interacted IRL, there's NO WAY he's 5'8"). Anyway, I say hello, compliment his work, and offer my hand to shake. He keeps pounding my hand with his fist and would not shake. This was way, way before fist bumping became a "thing" but that was essentially what he was doing, but wasn't getting a fist back, just my open hand repeatedly. Confused at the time, I just turned around. It was best for both of us.

I toured with a band for almost 14 years and still freelance with a local sound company so it’s mostly stories like “helped Questlove look for his cell phone” or “Fred Schneider came into our green room and asked if he could steal some yogurt”. Toured with Great Big Sea, Big Head Todd, Blues Traveler and Toad the Wet Sprocket and had a good time hanging with most of them.

Broke my normal rule and had to ask for a picture when Joss Stone was side stage after her set.

A little off topic but....my dad knew a NY Mets baseball player and arranged to get a team autographed ball through him. Dad gave me the ball when I was a teenager. Autographs included Yogi Berra and Casey Stengel. Years later, when I had my own son, when he was about 10, one day he took that ball from the display case while I was at work and used it to play ball with his friends. Came home and all the autographs were worn off. LOL now but not then.

UFC champ Khabib Nurmagomedov. I stopped at a coffee shop near my house after running some errands and he was sitting in the corner drinking a smoothie and eating a bowl of fruit.

Super weird to be going about your daily, unassuming routine and run into one of the most famous athletes on the planet.

UFC spotting, but this goes way back in time. We were big fans of UFC in the starting days, when Royce Gracie was king. Another big one of the time was Ken Shamrock. At the time he was living Lockeford, Ca, where one of my friends lived. Lockeford is a tiny place I can guarantee you have not heard of, unless you are from NorCal. Not even a traffic light there at that time. We’re eating breakfast at the only restaurant in town where you can eat breakfast, and sure enough, there was Shamrock. We were too shy and starstruck to say anything. I remember to this day, he walked up to pay, and when you looked at his back, it was in the shape of a V like I had never seen before or maybe since. Almost comically so. That dude was ripped.

    Quoted from Azmodeus:

Your dad should write a book.

It's probably stretching this topic a bit to include family members with minor notoriety...that said, here's a little more info about Dad...
I'm going to have to write my own book someday so I can tell all of the stories I can remember - he's been gone for a few years now.
My father, William T. Powers, in addition to being an astronomer and UFO investigator, was a serious author, writing numerous books about psychology. His books are currently out of print, although my sisters and I still have the last hundred copies or so of his original book. See description here: https://www.amazon.com/Behavior-Perception-William-T-Powers/dp/0964712172 . I'll sell ya one for only $500!
He published a few sci-fi stories in the 1950s through 1970s...I plan to publish them all as an anthology. He didn't often get mentioned on the magazine cover, but here are two examples where he did: The July 1971 Galaxy magazine is a copy my mother sent to the bindery and had made into a hardcover. The September 1953 Universe Science Fiction magazine is an original copy. Both are in the "family authors" section of my library. I haven't contributed yet, but looking over all the books by my uncles, grandfathers, and "multiple-great"-grandfathers tells me I'd better get busy.
I'll post some pics later of some other family-authored books, including one by this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avery_D._Andrews . He was my great-grandfather on my mother's side. Lots of competing egos on both sides of my family. That's quieted down quite a bit in the past couple of generations!

Hmmm, maybe I'll try to put something together! He and Hynek worked closely during those years, and we saw Dr. Hynek and his family often. Hynek's son Joel ended up doing special effects in the movies, including "Predator" in 1987 and many other TV and film credits. See this link: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0006699/?ref_=fn_nm_nm_1.
Joel Hynek recently worked on the Netflix series "Project Blue Book", which is interesting, but dramatized and not factually accurate.
People might enjoy the more boring, but factual version!
A lot of interesting information is available if you can make a visit to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The Hynek Archives are publicly available and include many Project Blue Book documents. Also, NU has a William T. Powers archive (my Dad) with more references.
    An interesting topic!

Quick funny story about one of my buddies.

There was an airshow at an Air Force base. The lowest ranking guy (my buddy) was in charge of getting a table at the bar. The crew told him they reserved a head table, he just had to claim it. They told him no matter what, he had to claim the table.

Fast forward to the airshow. As soon as the crew landed, they reminded my buddy about the table. He hopped in the transportation van and sped to the bar. Wall to wall people, not an empty table in sight. He made his way to the head table but there was an older guy sitting there, surrounded by people.

The crew showed up to the bar. "Where's our table?" My buddy said it was occupied. "Walk up to that dude and tell that motherfucker to get the fuck out!"

My buddy boldly headed to the table and prepared to tell the old guy exactly that until another crew member yanked him away. "Do you know who that is?"

    "Nope," my buddy says.

    "That's Chuck Yeager!"

The crew had set my buddy up for weeks to scream obscenities in Chuck Yeager's face.

Been a featured extra on a number of shows and movies. Here are few screenshots. Clair Danes (Cop on Homeland Season 3), Nicholas Cage (his lawyer in Dog eat Dog), Julia Louis Dreyfus (Congressman on HBO VEEP), Thomas Hayden Church, Lauren Graham(Funeral attendee Max Movie), Kevin Spacey, Molly Parker (Senator on House of Cards, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson (Detective on Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri).FWIW.... Woody Harrelson was the nicest and funniest person I have ever been on set with. Does a great Christopher Walken impression.

I posted this one in the eddie van halen thread but I was lucky enough to meet him for a bit in 95

A friend of mine knew the band really well so I got the VIP backstage go wherever you want pass.

He was really nice to me and I am sure he could tell I was shitting myself..

I normally could care less about famous people or celebrities etc. but in this case I played guitar since I was 8 or so, for me it was like meeting superman or batman or something.

I'll bet that made your day.

    Quoted from terrapinmark:

Gotta ask, Mark. How do you get a job like that...or is that your job?

Skip Ewing (country singer and songwriter). His mom was one of my elementary school teachers and she used to bring him in to play his guitar even though he was the same age as we where. I also got a dog from them.

Kim Fields when she was doing Facts of Life, outside the front gates at Disneyland.

Reggie Jackson, waiting for a flight at the San Jose Airport.

Collin Raye, pre concert meet and greet in San Bernardino.

Jerry Lewis, sitting at the next table in a restaurant at the South Point casino in Vegas. He was there getting ready for his Labor Day telethon.

I spotted Ed Robertson rushing around at the Allentown show a couple years ago before the doors opened to the public for the day. I'm guessing he was either trying to see everything before the crowds flooded in, or trying to squeeze in some pinball time in before getting back on the road for a concert or something.

He was actually in my town doing a concert a week prior to one of the Saratoga pinball shows that I held, and then at another concert further downstate during the week of the show. I admit I was a little tempted to reach out to let him know about the pinball show since he was going to be in the area, but since I don't actually have any sort of personal connection to him, I didn't end up doing anything.

When I was involved with concerts & theater a number of years back, I met a few minor (and usually just locally) known bands or individuals for some brief event planning, final setup, or sound checks. The most well-known folks I've done setup for were probably for Reel Big Fish and Lewis Black, but I never met them directly. Although, I did mic up (former) NY Congressman Chris Gibson for a local speaking engagement a number of years ago, and did meet him briefly.

But, most of the time event prep is busy, so everyone is usually focused on prep work, so there usually weren't any good opportunities to strike up conversations.

I always had fun doing live events. No matter how much advance planning there was, there was always some problem solving on the fly, which was usually exciting.

Just a hobby. I am in the chemical industry which allows me to travel. I still have family in Maryland which is where House of Cards and Veep were filmed. We have work offices in NC (where Max movie and Homeland were filmed) and Dog eat Dog was filmed in Cleveland (which is where I live). I donate all of "minimum wage" film earnings to a local animal shelter. Not that the guy was rude (because he wasn't) but my scene with Nicholas Cage took 2 hours to film. He did not say a single word to me .

    Hope you are well Bryan!!

I walked by Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters) and his entourage in the parking garage of a Vegas casino in 2016. He was tall and hard to miss. I'm sure my eyes were like saucers. I just grinned and waived. He nodded back.

One of my favorite authors is Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash, Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon). I went to a reading of Reamde by Neal at Unity Temple in 2011 and got to ask a question and later shake his hand. One of these days, a book of his will be made into a movie/series and more people will know of him.
