I was in a similar position as you. I was stuck in a professional rut designing stuff that didn't do much for me intellectually back in the mid 00s ... I wanted to do something different. I found a local company that was on sound financial footing (many were a wreck at the time), but could only offer about 80% of what I was making. I hesitated for a week ... I could easily afford the pay cut, but it was still a "pay cut".

Long story short, I took it anyway. It was one of the best career decisions I ever made despite virtually everyone telling me it would be career suicide ... staying in an industry that did nothing for me intellectually would have been the career killer . Life's too short to let 1/3 of what you do everyday make you miserable ... you seem to be stable financially ... I say do it!
