Doood! You had a pk ripper? Wow. Never even saw one in person back then.

#53 1 year ago

I rode bmx my whole life which transitioned into dirtbikes and stunt sportbikes.i bought a 1989 bully bashguard frame years ago to build it all og but have only found some parts for it ,the rest of it is impossible to locate.

I had a Puch just prior to that photo ... but on my trip into town one day I got hit by a car. Totaled the bike, and my Dad took me to the bike shop (Westwood Cycle in Westwood, NJ) and told me to get whatever I wanted since insurance would pay for it.

Loved that bike.

Not a collector, but here’s one for nostalgia… circa 1982. I felt invincible on this bike, and have the scars to prove it.

PK Rippers were pretty bad ass; but not rare around here. Kuwahara, Cooks Bros. Racing, and my SE Quadangle were very sparse though.
Obviously Haro, GT, Redlines were everywhere.
What great times!

Grew up on BMX, then a new kid rolled in from Cali on a VDC that blew our minds, aluminum, lightweight, cool frame but not a strong frame. Awesome era to grow up as kid. I miss my Kuwahara Nova in white

When I was about 12 yrs old, MX bikes did not exists. The cool bikes were Schwinn stingrays. I would literally restore them like I do a pinball machine today. As I got older and out of the bike hobby, MX was starting. Knobby tires, spokeless rims, MX handlebars and a MX frame was so cool. I wish I was into bikes in that era, but my interest changed to gas MX.

The only bike I wanted in 1979 was a Schwinn Sting, never happened.

These BMX companies would make a killing if they reissued some of these bikes like Powell Peralta, Santa Cruz, Dog Town, Vision do their 80’s skateboards.

#64 1 year ago

I picked this up earlier in the year along with a Skyway Street Styler. Robinson for me and the skyway for my kid.

An '80's Raleigh Ultra Shock popped up complete fo $600 yesterday. I am so tempted because it's so similar to the bike I had when I was aroudn 8 that was stolen, but just not quite the same as a Torker 2. Man, I'm tempted though.

I have a restored 1987 GT Pro Freestyle Tour built like the one I had as a kid:
[quoted image]

Someday, I hope to restore an '86 GT World Tour to the way I had mine when I was a kid. It was white with lavender accents and I had the folding front fork stands and the rear peg standers, too. It was stolen from a friend's house when I was staying the night there. I loved that bike, still do. I still hold out hope that it's alive and well somewhere in town here, and that I'll find it somehow. Sadly, I'm sure the reality is that some time after the crook stole it, he just threw it away...

1983 Mongoose Expert all original minus new soft seat for old A$$, seat post + clamp, new tuffs, new chain
Just grabbed it off CL last fall, super fun ride. Had been missing having one for 40+ years.

niiiiice work

If I want a cherry candy apple red Mongoose fork + frame with gusset from 78-82, do I:
+ Go grab any used frame and powder coat it locally?
+ Do I buy one from an "expert" on ebay for $800 already painted?
+ Or do I grab a used one with nicks and dings and a little fade?

I'm not convinced I'll find that cherry red again with no fade... wondering your thoughts?
mof

#77 9 months ago

Probably depends on what level you are planning at restoring the bike too.

Good rider condition- just buy that faded f&f with a couple marks here and there and go out and ride it. They are only original once.

Mint build- powder is cheaper and a great option. As long as no dents will come out looking sweet.

If you have plenty of $$$$- 2pac painted is the way to go. Mint show level.

I would probably use powder coat. Can still look mint and be a sweet rider.

THen again I have some survivor rider condition frame sets that i put together and love riding them as I don’t have to worry about any marks.

Them GT fork stander extremely Expensive

The whole damn bike is expensive, these days! I bought it new and I can guarantee if it never got stolen, I'd still have it now. If I had a choice between buying one just like I had or a pin, like a Taxi or Space Shuttle, I'd take the bike without even flinching.

93-94 GT guy here. Blue one replicated exactly how I had it as a kid in 93. Chrome one was the same bike my best friend had in 94.

Wow!!! I haven't seen a Hutch like that in years. I was 14 in 84 and that was my grail bike back then. Oddly enough, I kinda still feel that way looking at the picture after all of these years. Nostalgia is one hella of a drug. Nice bike man, really nice bike!

I feel you. I hung with a bunch of rich kids (small town) but I was from a lower income home compared to these guys. I had to cut grass and work in the fields to earn money. The best I could muster was a used Diamond Back Viper. It was heavy compared to all the other guy's Torker IIs, GTs, Redlines, etc that everyone was rolling on. I put a lot of upgraded parts on it, but it was lipstick on a pig. The frame is everything and the Viper was just a heavy turd, but it was my turd and I rode it hard.

My story is just like you, but I forgot to lock my rad ride up at the apartment. Was gone the next day. Mine was an '86 ish Torker freestyle.

I have copies of my childhood bikes. I’d trade them for a equal valued Pinball Machine…I’d just copy them again…Lol….Pins harder to come by IMO.

Well... I have been compelled to pull my old bike out of storage. I saw this at a bike shop in what I believe was 92. I had to have it. My dad paid 250 for it at the time.. And said it was way to much to pay for a bike.
It's unrestored... But if anyone has ideas on where to get gum wall white tires let me know. These are original and trashed. The bike cleaned up well. Anyone familiar with these?

I still have my 99 GT. All original, never wrecked. I bought it new when my 86 GT Pro Perfomer was stolen. Strictly rode flatland.

A very good pinball friend of mine who restores 80’s/90’s bmx told me the late 90’s GTs with large dropouts are sought after these days and are worth good money.

I love 80’s bikes. Had a beautiful pink and white diamond back that was stolen when I was a kid... I replaced it with my first paycheck in high school with a vert GT performer circa 1997.

I’ve refurbed that GT 3 times over the years, now my kids ride it. I get excited every time I see them on it

Diamond back pictured is not mine

I wish all of us weird guys lived geographically closer. It weird how you have that desire to finally own the one thing you wished you had as a kid that was out of your reach. Its only those pivotal years 8-16 for me. I had to own a Galaga, but I could care less about owing any 90s arcade machine. I want to own a 2nd gen Camaro/TA again, but I could care less about re-owning any other past vehicle.

So 1980-1991 is considered Old School. 90’s don’t hold much value compared. I would guess 3-$500 to the right person.

90’s bikes are rising in popularity. It’s my belief that they in demand in the years to come. These are Mid School, so BMXMuseum says…Lol…

Anyone have any idea how much my 1987 GT Pro Freestyle Tour might go for these days? I restored it to look like the one I had as a kid. I restored it about 23 years ago and it was expensive then. I have never ridden it since and now just hangs up in my garage.

$2-3k if the Bars and levers/brakes where Odyssey’s (Stock correct) for the time period. But amazing, as is about 2k “, is that original paint or Powdercoat…they didn’t powder coat them in the 80’s. Look tuff. Those bars got popular take then.
