Hi Pinside,

Need tech help / advice please. I have a WHO dunnit that just yesterday started having sound/music issues. I haven't turned it on for a few weeks and when I did yesterday during the initial test it made several very loud bong sounds and said to check "Ux" x = a number I can't recall (I think it was 19 and 20). I shut the machine off and started checking around the the lower left board in the head which appears to contain audio boards/chips. I pushed 3 of the chips that were loose back into the socket (see pic) and turned the machine back on. The chips are not soldiered directly to the board, there is a socket to install the chips into. It successfully booted up and I played half way through a game and it made a very loud popping sound followed by a loud electronic tone that just keep on going. I shut it off and didn't try another game until today with similar results. Sometimes the sound and music will just go out completely without any popping or horrible sound. Any idea on what this might be?

Thanks,
Brent

Thanks, I will check and reseat all those cables later tonight. There are several chips on the boards that have an open window. I'll put a sticker or piece of tape over them all.

I reseated all the cables going to and from the audio board. This appears to have fixed the issue. I played several games with no issues. I also covered the windows on several chips with black electrical tape. Thanks for the advice guys!

This issue has cropped again. I can play a game or 2 without issue and it will come out of nowhere. It still makes very loud popping sounds and horrible loud electronic sounds. The game will still play fine and no other issues other than the sound issue. I can unplug the speaker connections to the sound board and keep playing. This will happen when the machine is on attract mode also. Rebooting the machine sometimes will fix it for awhile and sometimes it will bong many times like 10+ and shows a RAM u10 - u12 error. I do own an IJ and STTNG so swapping boards is a possibility for testing purposes? Do not have a chip puller though. Reseated cables again, no change. Any suggestions?
